Summary

The new thrilling installment of John Connolly's popular Charlie Parker series。

He is our best hope。

He is our last hope。

On lonely moor in the northeast of England, the body of a young woman is discovered near the site of a vanished church。 In the south, a girl lies buried beneath a Saxon mound。 To the southeast, the ruins of a priory hide a human skull。

Each is a sacrifice, a summons。

And something in the darkness has heard the call。

But another is coming: Parker the hunter, the avenger。 From the forests of Maine to the deserts of the Mexican border, from the canals of Amsterdam to the streets of London, he will track those who would cast this world into darkness。

Parker fears no evil。

But evil fears him 。 。 。

Way too long - coulda trimmed 200 pages。 The first of this series I didn’t thoroughly enjoy。

So, I never read any books in this series。 I got it for free and didn't realize it was part of a series。 Kind of wondered about the relationships between some of the characters and the established reputation of Parker。 Easy to read and follow along nonetheless。 Probably missed some of the nuance not having read any others but I had no expectations either。 The story about a book that could change reality ( not for the better ) and the evil ones that want to bring it about and the heroes who want So, I never read any books in this series。 I got it for free and didn't realize it was part of a series。 Kind of wondered about the relationships between some of the characters and the established reputation of Parker。 Easy to read and follow along nonetheless。 Probably missed some of the nuance not having read any others but I had no expectations either。 The story about a book that could change reality ( not for the better ) and the evil ones that want to bring it about and the heroes who want to stop it was gripping and definitely not for the squeamish。 Bad things happened to good people and bad things happened to bad people and a few got out without damage but there was a heavy toll。 The stakes of the plot were pretty high so I agree with the cost and that the punches of the evil weren't pulled made it hit pretty hard。 I enjoyed the book and will probably read more of the series now。 Five stars because I didn't want the book to end and the end rushed up。 Five stars for any book that does that for me。 。。。more

Charlie Parker books are reliably well-written and so entertaining。

This was a disappointing book, was descent in the beginning, but too much emphasis on secondary and tertiary characters, not enough Parker, Louis and Angel。 Expected a big payoff after all that, but the end was pretty anticlimactic。 I really couldn't even track the final bit with some tertiary barely touched upon character getting killed in the end, and the supernatural aspect was played way up, then sort of just went away towards the end。 In my opinion the worst of the Parker series。 This was a disappointing book, was descent in the beginning, but too much emphasis on secondary and tertiary characters, not enough Parker, Louis and Angel。 Expected a big payoff after all that, but the end was pretty anticlimactic。 I really couldn't even track the final bit with some tertiary barely touched upon character getting killed in the end, and the supernatural aspect was played way up, then sort of just went away towards the end。 In my opinion the worst of the Parker series。 。。。more

At first this one seemed a bit disjointed for me。 Maybe too many story lines or peripheral characters。 But then, in true John Connelly/Charlie Parker fashion, things started pulling in, coming more into focus。 As,I neared the end everything was one again in crystal clear focus。 I have said before that John Connelly was a true storyteller, is no less true here。 It just took ME a while to get to where Mr Connelly was trying to take me。 I will read this series to the very end, even if there are mor At first this one seemed a bit disjointed for me。 Maybe too many story lines or peripheral characters。 But then, in true John Connelly/Charlie Parker fashion, things started pulling in, coming more into focus。 As,I neared the end everything was one again in crystal clear focus。 I have said before that John Connelly was a true storyteller, is no less true here。 It just took ME a while to get to where Mr Connelly was trying to take me。 I will read this series to the very end, even if there are more 600+ pages tomes to be delved into。 。。。more

Absolutely love this series of books! John Connolly never lets me down!

I really enjoyed this book despite it feeling like a book about some British police with a sprinkling of Parker。 However, I am beginning to feel that the author has no intention of tying these books up and is going to keep milking them for money。 There is no end in sight and it is disappointing。I also think that the police characters in this should get their own books。

What started 17 books ago as a serial killer story with some mystical undertones has become a full on Song Of Ice And Fire of horror。 The books weave a complex and far reaching mythology of old gods that also manages to connect to current worldwide sociological and political trends。 In addition, like GRRM, Connolly is willing to kill off any character without warning, especially after making you care about them!

Nicholas Ryan

Personally not the most enjoyable book of the series felt like John tried to over complicate this one with lots of back and forward between various time lines and felt the final showdown was not as epic as it could have been。 Still a decent read but dragged on a touch and felt disconnected from what has made this series so successful,

Don Weymouth

Talk about serial killers killing each other 。。。 the djinni and Familists are interesting, but this was like reading a James Michener novel where it takes a hundred pages to describe a grain of sand。

Fredrick Danysh

Private investigator Charlie Parker is on a consulting retainer with the FBI despite his violent history。 He is call in to track down a pair of violent killers who have ties to the supernatural。 In a previous encounter with the pair, the woman shot him。 Parker will follow the fugitives to Europe where a chain of ritual murders starts up。

Paul

Superb storytelling by Mr Connolly。 Convoluted but brilliant。 Read The Woman in the Woods first。

David Lillico

Still a great series, only negative to knock it down from 5 stars is the sub plots that ended up with minimal input to the story, could have been punchier and 100 pages shorter, still going straight onto the next installment though

I love this guy’s writingAnd this book is no exception。 I dinged it one star because there wasn’t enough of Charlie Parker。 But still a fine read。

Angel

Revenge。 Blood。 Death。 Good people die, bad people die。

Stunning。 I love all the Charlie Parker books, but this one brought me back to one of my favourites, the Black Angel。 So many threads, many layers, many references to the themes of past books。I would call John Connolly a great crime writer, but that is too specific; he's a great writer, genre be damned。 Stunning。 I love all the Charlie Parker books, but this one brought me back to one of my favourites, the Black Angel。 So many threads, many layers, many references to the themes of past books。I would call John Connolly a great crime writer, but that is too specific; he's a great writer, genre be damned。 。。。more

I took my time to fully digest A Book of Bones by John Connolly。 I feel I need to provide a bit of background at how I found myself a John Connolly fan。 I have been a Michael Connelly fan for over twenty years。 While looking for another author, I came across John Connolly at the book store。 I purchased the first Charlie Parker novel and the rest, by friend, is history。 The reason why I wanted to add my John Connolly backstory is because Mr。 Connelly mentioned Hieronomous Bosch paintings in A Boo I took my time to fully digest A Book of Bones by John Connolly。 I feel I need to provide a bit of background at how I found myself a John Connolly fan。 I have been a Michael Connelly fan for over twenty years。 While looking for another author, I came across John Connolly at the book store。 I purchased the first Charlie Parker novel and the rest, by friend, is history。 The reason why I wanted to add my John Connolly backstory is because Mr。 Connelly mentioned Hieronomous Bosch paintings in A Book of Bones。 Mr。 Michael Connelly created his main character, Harry Bosch from Hieronomous Bosch。 I was really happy to make that correlation。 On a side note, both John Connoly and Michael Connelly both have a strong connection with music。A Book of Bones is a complex novel that takes the reader from Arizona, to Europe searching for yet another bad group of people, Quale and Mors。 I found the supernatural connection with a great detective story keep me interested the entire book。 We are reunited with Charlie's team, Angel and Louis, along with a new member to this team。I found the research, writing and connections of past books to be extremely exciting。 Mr。 Connolly continues to remind me I was quite fortunate to find such a great writer。 。。。more

A Book of Bones is the seventeenth book in the Charlie Parker series by Irish writer John Connolly。 Charlie Parker is a private investigator and in each book his character develops。 Just under 700 pages long, this is John Connolly longest book and is a very complex thriller。 A powerful plot, amalgamating crime and the human and supernatural worlds。 Full of suspense, mystery and tension, A Book of Bones will have you on the edge of your seat。 A definite page turner。 If you have not read any other A Book of Bones is the seventeenth book in the Charlie Parker series by Irish writer John Connolly。 Charlie Parker is a private investigator and in each book his character develops。 Just under 700 pages long, this is John Connolly longest book and is a very complex thriller。 A powerful plot, amalgamating crime and the human and supernatural worlds。 Full of suspense, mystery and tension, A Book of Bones will have you on the edge of your seat。 A definite page turner。 If you have not read any other books in the Charlie Parker series, you certainly will want to read them all after reading A Book of Bones! A BOOK OF BONES, overly long, contains lots of narrative rabbit holes down which Connolly stuffs the reader – disquisitions on the antiquarian book trade, the history of church architecture, comparative occult beliefs, the Jack the Ripper case, even some historical faux-epistles and memoirs。 But it’s all interesting, and the conclusion (if somewhat abrupt after 700+ pages) is satisfying。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 I REALLY liked this。 One critic described it as gothic horror which is an accurate description。 The storyline was unique, complex and freaky。 Lots of gory murders。 Great complex characters。 This author is not afraid to "go there" with the freaky and horrific。 This was #17 in a series so I feel like I'm missing a little backstory with the main characters。 I will definitely read more of the Charlie Parker series。 4。5 stars。 I REALLY liked this。 One critic described it as gothic horror which is an accurate description。 The storyline was unique, complex and freaky。 Lots of gory murders。 Great complex characters。 This author is not afraid to "go there" with the freaky and horrific。 This was #17 in a series so I feel like I'm missing a little backstory with the main characters。 I will definitely read more of the Charlie Parker series。 。。。more

A fairly hard to read story with the excessively extensive vocabulary and unusual names and places。 The action itself and the continued story line for Parker were interesting and entertaining but this was not a light read。 It took some concentration and some rereading to complete。 A complicated story but worth it。

Another page turner from John Connolly。 I think it may be the first time ever I've read all of the previous books before the new one comes out。 The 17th book in a series means that each time picking one up is like reuniting with old friends, albeit ones who live in a darker and more disturbing world than we even do now in the age of Covid19。"He is our best hope。He is our last hope。On lonely moor in the northeast of England, the body of a young woman is discovered near the site of a vanished chur Another page turner from John Connolly。 I think it may be the first time ever I've read all of the previous books before the new one comes out。 The 17th book in a series means that each time picking one up is like reuniting with old friends, albeit ones who live in a darker and more disturbing world than we even do now in the age of Covid19。"He is our best hope。He is our last hope。On lonely moor in the northeast of England, the body of a young woman is discovered near the site of a vanished church。 In the south, a girl lies buried beneath a Saxon mound。 To the southeast, the ruins of a priory hide a human skull。Each is a sacrifice, a summons。And something in the darkness has heard the call。But another is coming: Parker the hunter, the avenger。 From the forests of Maine to the deserts of the Mexican border, from the canals of Amsterdam to the streets of London, he will track those who would cast this world into darkness。Parker fears no evil。But evil fears him 。 。 。。。more

Weighing in at 672 pages, with flashbacks spanning hundreds of years, A Bag of Bones is epic。 Connolly is the king of the slow burn and the flashbacks are great little ghost stories all on their own。 The reason I'm not rating it a 5 is because it seemed a hundred pages too long, thus it didn't grip and compel me forward like most of his previous Charlie Parker novels。 But if you're a Parker fan, you can't miss this one (much is revealed)。 Weighing in at 672 pages, with flashbacks spanning hundreds of years, A Bag of Bones is epic。 Connolly is the king of the slow burn and the flashbacks are great little ghost stories all on their own。 The reason I'm not rating it a 5 is because it seemed a hundred pages too long, thus it didn't grip and compel me forward like most of his previous Charlie Parker novels。 But if you're a Parker fan, you can't miss this one (much is revealed)。 。。。more

Loved this book。 In my opinion up there with my favourite, The Killing Kind。 Some superb historical buildings, facts interwoven into the fictional story。 Great detail, you can sense the looming, inevitable ending building early on。 The biggest surprise was the additional piece at the end of the book, based on 20yrs of Every Dead Thing。 I have met John on several occasions when he visits Inverness for book signings。 I always have so much to ask him only to blurb out some rubbish that makes no sen Loved this book。 In my opinion up there with my favourite, The Killing Kind。 Some superb historical buildings, facts interwoven into the fictional story。 Great detail, you can sense the looming, inevitable ending building early on。 The biggest surprise was the additional piece at the end of the book, based on 20yrs of Every Dead Thing。 I have met John on several occasions when he visits Inverness for book signings。 I always have so much to ask him only to blurb out some rubbish that makes no sense and he probably remembers me as the tongue twisted fool。 But he is taller than I though he would be ;)5 out of 5。 。。。more
