Four in general， four and a half at times， and five for an ecchi romantic comedy。This is a loose review of volumes five and six。 I couldn’t help myself， I had to keep reading。 The author（s） has done a good job making you care for his characters and the contrived conflicts they get into。 This series is very nonchalant about dropping unlikely coincidences （people who shouldn’t be in that area of town suddenly show up， people who should have no relation with each other turn out to have it， etc。）， b Four in general， four and a half at times， and five for an ecchi romantic comedy。This is a loose review of volumes five and six。 I couldn’t help myself， I had to keep reading。 The author（s） has done a good job making you care for his characters and the contrived conflicts they get into。 This series is very nonchalant about dropping unlikely coincidences （people who shouldn’t be in that area of town suddenly show up， people who should have no relation with each other turn out to have it， etc。）， but they are always done to make things harder for the characters， which forces them to reveal their real selves。 Even main characters that were supposed to be on top of the food chain get slapped in the face， and if there’s anything I， an apostle of Pain， properly appreciate in this world is a steady doling out of suffering。At the end of the previous volume， the protagonist’s blackmailing， possibly underage girlfriend had become jealous of the escort the protagonist is actually in love with， and she had dragged him into a love hotel supposedly to obliterate his virginity。 However， she actually wanted the privacy to extract the entire story between the two protagonists out of the hapless guy。 He opens up about everything: that he rented the escort because he had just been dumped， that he had dragged the escort to meet his grandmother only to find out that the grandmothers of both are friends so they needed to continue pretending to be a couple， and then he had presented the escort as his girlfriend to his circle of friends who also attend the same college as the girl。 The deepening hole of blackmail and lies had withered away their sanity to the extent that they had developed feelings for each other。 The guy had figured out he was in love with the escort while jerking off， but the girl was still pushing down her true feelings in favor of not ruining her life by dating such an idiot。 In any case， the protagonist’s current girlfriend， named Ruka， understands that they believe they need to keep lying in order not to disappoint their families， but she intends to intercede and present herself as the guy’s real girlfriend。 She steals from his phone the date and place of their next meeting with the protagonist’s family。 She also attempts to have sex with the guy， but he excuses himself， because he feels that losing his virginity to some other girl would be betraying his beloved escort。When the day comes， the protagonist and the escort， looking quite high class herself， present themselves to the matriarch of the protagonist’s family。 However， this Ruka girl also makes an appearance。 The guy’s family don’t understand the connection this other cute girl could have with the protagonist。 Ruka keeps acting like a doting girlfriend in front of the escort， to the extent that the grandmother drags the protagonist away to force an explanation out of him。 He says that Ruka is a friend of the escort， but that she’s a bit touched in the head and lies compulsively。 The grandmother believes it because it’s more likely than that two people could possibly have become attracted to her grandson。 The rest of the meeting is an uncomfortable mess。 Ruka， after having learned that they take her for a compulsive liar， snatches the grandma away to explain that the coprotagonist is an escort， with the wish to replace her herself in the eyes of this grandmother。 However， she doesn’t get to explain the situation， because it quickly becomes clear that the grandmother has become enamoured of the escort as a person， not just because she’s the grandson’s girlfriend （the grandmother seems somewhat sexually confused; at one point she had actually groped the girl’s naked breasts as well as her pussy）。 In any case， Ruka realizes that she needs to work very hard in order for this family to accept her as the protagonist’s girlfriend。Given that I’m loosely summarizing two volumes， I remember mostly the biggest stuff。 The protagonist’s nerd friend had gotten outed in the previous volume as someone who hires escorts （he had hired Ruka）， and from then on he only posted in social media about how he generally dislikes women。 The protagonist realizes that his pal is on his way to become a forever alone meme， but he figures out the solution: any man who would date his beloved escort even for a day would immediately wish to have a girlfriend of his own。 In a surprising sequence that felt quite demeaning as far as I’m concerned， he hires his next door neighbor to date his friend， and through it reveal that the protagonist was also guilty of hiring escorts。 The friend is shocked beyond belief at this development， and for a while believes that the protagonist was whoring out his girlfriend to make him feel better， but the protagonist himself has a chance to explain their whole history to him。 The guy is very appreciative of how the protagonist opened up to him about something so painful， and he regains his confidence。 Throughout the rest of these three volumes he covers for the protagonist and the escort’s relationship when needed。The protagonist and the escort grow a bit closer。 One morning he had gotten out to his balcony only to notice that the girl was brushing her teeth in the balcony next to his， but he feels he can’t greet her， as he would be overstepping his boundaries as a simple client。 However， she does greet him and they have a chat。 She actually wants his help: one of the new girls at her escort agency is too shy to perform her job properly， and she needs some good experiences to sharpen her up。 She can only trust the protagonist amongst her clients。 He accepts， given that he’s touched that the escort would rely on him。On the day of that fake date， the protagonist shows his growth in how he’s no longer fazed by being accompanied by beautiful women nor interacting with them， and when he realizes how mortally shy the girl is （she can’t look him in the eye， can’t say a full sentence， keeps blushing， etc。） he wants to help her。 We also get more of the running joke that whenever he meets one of these cute main characters， every man around the protagonist drools and wishes they were in his place， but over time the comments have become more ridiculous and self aware （“I want to lick her armpits”， “I wish she would pee on me while my sister watched”， “Do we just exist to comment on how cute these girls are？”）。 I like that kind of silly shit。 This shy escort is trying hard to accommodate him and do girlfriend-y stuff （sharing ice cream， holding hands， etc。）， but it looks very out of character。 They go bowling， and during a moment when the protagonist went to pee， some delinquents sexually harass the poor girl， who wants to disappear into the floor。 The protagonist， having grown a decent enough spine by this point， goes back to the girl and both leave hand in hand。 She’s moved that this guy would care to save her from this situation， and not even being bothered that the others were hurling insults at his back。They try other sports and have a decent enough time， with the girl pushing some appreciative words out of herself。 However， at one point the protagonist’s mostly narcissistic and manipulative ex sees both together， and sits with the girl in order to figure out what their relationship is。 Because the protagonist is considering that he might one day go back to his ex， he doesn’t tell the girl to eat shit， but instead lets her believe that he’s cheating on his beloved escort。 The ex can’t deal with the fact that the dweeb that she broke up with is suddenly two-timing on two gorgeous girls。 Before he leaves him to his cheating， she makes sure of learning the shy escort’s full name。By the end of the date， the shy escort says goodbye to him and with a full sentence she wishes they will meet again。 The protagonist is glad the whole thing turned out mostly alright， mainly because his beloved escort will appreciate it。The escort doesn’t address the situation for a few days， which makes him believe that helping the shy escort was a demand that she didn’t give much importance to。 However， during one of their talks in the balcony she opens up about that she’ll likely quit her escort job soon。 She was working as an escort and living in a dingy apartment in order to pay for both her college and her acting classes; given that she’s gotten a main role in a significant play， and that she’s been told that it’s likely that some scouts will hire her for further roles， she wants to avoid the escorting stuff from interfering or possibly even ruining her acting career。 The protagonist is partially happy that she’s moving forward， but he’s terrified of losing her。 He feels that whenever she quits as an escort she will cease interacting with him， as she wouldn’t be required to in any capacity。The protagonist’s ex had searched for the shy escort’s name online and found out she’s an escort， and browsing other names at that same agency she had found that the coprotagonist is an escort as well。 She passes herself for a guy and hires the escort for an afternoon。 This ex isn’t as one-note as she initially seemed; she has a dark edge to her that makes you think she’s going to snap at any moment。 The escort is very troubled to have been found out， but she’s working， so she has to obey to a certain extent。 They go into the very karaoke place where the protagonist is working part-time （one of those coincidences）。 He also happens to work with Ruka， because she intended to spend the most time with her boyfriend as possible。 In any case， the ex pushes the escort into singing for her。 Afterwards the ex says that she’s appreciative of having discovered the escort’s real self， and she doesn’t blame her for anything， but warns her that she must let the protagonist go， because keeping this fake relationship （it has been going on for a year） is preventing him from moving on and getting a real girlfriend。 Their conversation is more tense than I can make it here。In any case， when they leave the karaoke place， the protagonist pretends to be sick at work to follow the couple。 As they were to part ways on some overpass， the escort， knowing how much being dumped had hurt the protagonist， and realizing that the guy could make someone happy， she insists for the ex to consider giving him another chance。 She says something to the effect of that as an escort she has realized that feelings like real love are really hard to come by， and she shouldn’t give up so easily in someone who at one point had intended to make her happy。 In the end， the ex says coldly that the escort should no longer bother any of them， and leaves。The protagonist had listened to all of that， while crying his eyes out as usual， and back at the apartment complex he waits for the escort to arrive。 He reveals that he had followed them and listened to the conversation。 After he thanks her for sticking up for him， she’s sorry that she hadn’t fulfilled her intention of getting him a girlfriend。 Witnessing how she spoke about him in her spare time， and how much of a great person she is， he goes a bit forward and states to her that he has clear that the escort herself is the only one he wants。The volume ends pretty much there。 I’ve already read a bit of the next volume， which contains significant character development for both main characters， and some realistic consequences。I haven’t been this invested in a romantic comedy since “Toradora！” from back in the day。 That is major praise coming from me。 Initially I had feared that this series would contain perennially one-dimensional characters who would be used mainly for perverted jokes （and that would have been fine with me for a while）， but that’s clearly not the case， and I’ve gotten to care a bit for what’s in store for these fake people。 Also the girls are cute and stuff。 。。。more
