Can't wait for them to meet!! Maika's dad is that secret player who wins in the end。 New version and of witches are in the game。 Its gonna be exciting to see what comes next。 But Maika thinking of Tuya for hope, while Tuya is betraying her since the beginning is the saddest part。Fun fact - In this world, girls can get each other pregnant。 That's so cool! 。。。more

This feels like it is a slower paced volume, at least in comparison to volume 4。 There is still action going on, but it isn't quite as frantic。 It's more controlled。 Questions are still left unanswered, but I feel like there are more clues to the answers - and I just need to put them together。I'm actually enjoying not working things out, I'm quite content to be pulled along by the story and hopefully be shocked and surprised by the revelations。 This feels like it is a slower paced volume, at least in comparison to volume 4。 There is still action going on, but it isn't quite as frantic。 It's more controlled。 Questions are still left unanswered, but I feel like there are more clues to the answers - and I just need to put them together。I'm actually enjoying not working things out, I'm quite content to be pulled along by the story and hopefully be shocked and surprised by the revelations。 。。。more

taking matriarchy to the next level by explaining that women can naturally reproduce with each other in this universe was the cherry on top, lowkey。。。every volume of this series has been a gift。 i don't want to live in this brutal universe but i am obsessed with this brutal universe。 i had given up on the epic fantasy as a genre。 this is everything i ever hoped it could be。 taking matriarchy to the next level by explaining that women can naturally reproduce with each other in this universe was the cherry on top, lowkey。。。every volume of this series has been a gift。 i don't want to live in this brutal universe but i am obsessed with this brutal universe。 i had given up on the epic fantasy as a genre。 this is everything i ever hoped it could be。 。。。more

The story continues and heats up! There are great Flashbacks into Maika's childhood and some good character building involving Corvin。 The art is great (I love Takeda's art) and this volume moves the story along nicely。 The story continues and heats up! Series Info/Source: This is the fifth volume in the Monstress series。 I bought this book。Story (4/5): Things are definitely escalating between the Federation and the Arcanics, this volume ends up being one huge war between the two groups。 I appreciate the way the scope of the story has broadened but honestly this book jumps around so much it gets hard to keep track of what’s happening at points。 I am beginning to think each volume is taking on too much; this started with the 4th volume。 I enjoye Series Info/Source: This is the fifth volume in the Monstress series。 I bought this book。Story (4/5): Things are definitely escalating between the Federation and the Arcanics, this volume ends up being one huge war between the two groups。 I appreciate the way the scope of the story has broadened but honestly this book jumps around so much it gets hard to keep track of what’s happening at points。 I am beginning to think each volume is taking on too much; this started with the 4th volume。 I enjoyed it, but am still a bit confused about what happened at certain parts and just don’t have time to go back and reread it right now。 Characters (4/5): As with previous books the characters are very well done。 However, a lot of new characters are thrown at you (strange nuns with explosive powers for one)。 Again, all the jumping around between groups of characters is already tough to keep track of and now there are even more。 I hope that things calm down some so that we can see some more character development in the next volume。Setting (5/5): Settings are beautifully drawn and this is a very intricate and detailed world。 No real complaints about this, this is a masterfully built world。Writing/Drawing Style (4/5): This remains an absolute stunning graphic novel series illustration-wise。 Each page is a piece of art that is beautiful and detailed and just amazing to look at。 The writing I am starting to have more trouble with。 We are jumping back and forth in time (some time this is noted, sometimes it’s not) and between a lot of locations。 It gets very confusing as to what is actually happening and I found myself paging back and forth trying to figure out what was going on。 Hopefully things are tightened up a bit in the next volume and more characters and plotlines don’t continue to be layered on top of a story that is already starting to get too diffuse for this format。My Summary (4/5): Overall I continue to enjoy the beautiful art style of this graphic novel and love the world here。 I really enjoy some of the characters but the number of characters is just getting way too big to keep track of。 The story is epic in nature and jumps between scenes very quickly and most of this book is dedicated to a giant war。 It got a bit confusing at parts and I kept having to go back and re-read things。 I plan on reading the next book in the series but was a bit disappointed in some aspects of this volume。 I just don’t like it when graphic novels start to jump between this many storylines, it diffuses the story too much。 。。。more

Another excellent entry into the Monstress saga。 All-out war is here。 This tale is many things, among them horriffic, heart wrenching, snarky, and ultimately full of some great action。 All the characters have grown since we first met them in Volume 1, and I look forward to the next edition。

This volume of Monstress may be the darkest yet, juxtaposing what really happened when Maika and Tuva were children at the Battle of Constantine against the present-day attack on the city of Ravenna。 With the same strength of storytelling and gorgeous, intricate art, Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda take an unflinching look at the horrors of war。 I was also struck, after several months' break since reading Volume 4, by how complex and nuanced the saga is getting。 It's really impressive but easier to This volume of Monstress may be the darkest yet, juxtaposing what really happened when Maika and Tuva were children at the Battle of Constantine against the present-day attack on the city of Ravenna。 With the same strength of storytelling and gorgeous, intricate art, Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda take an unflinching look at the horrors of war。 I was also struck, after several months' break since reading Volume 4, by how complex and nuanced the saga is getting。 It's really impressive but easier to follow straight through。 I'm looking forward to doing a full read-through from the beginning before the next volume comes out。 。。。more

If You Have Looked At Monstress Even One Time, You Know The Art Is Incredible。 There is no other comic I'd rather look at。 I don't have very strong visual literacy skills, but the comic does a lot of work in making visually distinct characters and factions- which is helpful, because the story is dense and twisty, built with layers of corruption and mystery - but honestly we usually introduce and solve a mystery every arc (even if they are different mysteries)。 This volume solves a central myster If You Have Looked At Monstress Even One Time, You Know The Art Is Incredible。 There is no other comic I'd rather look at。 I don't have very strong visual literacy skills, but the comic does a lot of work in making visually distinct characters and factions- which is helpful, because the story is dense and twisty, built with layers of corruption and mystery - but honestly we usually introduce and solve a mystery every arc (even if they are different mysteries)。 This volume solves a central mystery, and starts showing some consequences of previous volumes coming in force。This volume contains:(view spoiler)[Maika's emotional arc coming into its own with the incredibly powerful "I am a monster, and I don't want to die。" SELF ACCEPTANCE。 Kippa's powers coming to the forefront but simultaneously Kippa coming to the forefront and gaining some self-assurance and purpose (confidence!)WHAT HAPPENED AT CONSTANTINE。 Finally a (the? maybe just a) central mystery unveiled。 I don't know if Liu and Takeda have talked about how long this comic is planned to be and obviously it isn't done yet but the light is shining and I can glimpse the tunnel's end in a few more volumes。Maika's got her radical self-acceptance but Zinn is Not Having A Good Time。 Powerful when Maika is now in enough of a good place to help her monster out。Also war's here now! Blood, fire, courage and its terrible consequences, tactics, murder, and other painful things。(hide spoiler)] 。。。more

There is plenty of thrilling action here, complemented by the emergence of a wicked new strain of dark humour and the various narrative arcs coming closer into conflict with each other than ever before。
