Summary

The New York Times bestseller that is a must-read for any parent!

From Beth Kobliner, the author of the bestselling personal finance bible Get a Financial Life—a new, must-have guide showing parents how to teach their children (from toddlers to young adults) to manage money in a smart way。

Many of us think we can have the “money talk” when our kids are old enough to get it…which won’t be for years, right? But get this: Research shows that even preschoolers can understand basic money concepts, and a study from Cambridge University confirmed that basic money habits are formed by the age of seven。 Oh, and research shows the number one influence on kids’ financial behaviors is mom and dad。 Clearly, we can’t afford to wait。

Make Your Kid a Money Genius (Even If You’re Not) is a jargon-free, step-by-step guide to help parents of all income levels teach their kids—from ages three to twenty-three—about money。 It turns out the key to raising a money genius isn’t to teach that four quarters equal a dollar or how to pick a stock。 Instead, it’s about instilling values that have been proven to make people successful—not just financially, but in life: delaying gratification, working hard, living within your means, getting a good education, and acting generously toward others。 More specifically, you’ll learn why allowance isn’t the Holy Grail when teaching your kid to handle money, and why after-school jobs aren’t always the answer either。 You’ll discover the right age to give your kid a credit card, and learn why doling out a wad of cash can actually be a good parenting move。

You don’t need to be a money genius to make your kid a money genius。 Regardless of your comfort level with finance—or your family’s income—this charming and fun book is an essential guide for passing along enduring financial principles, making your kids wise beyond their years—and peers—when it comes to money。

Solid book with lots of good and practical advice。 There were a lot of great tips for talking about various financial matters to children of different ages (though I don't spend any time with children so what do I know lol)。 If I ever raised a child I'd probably follow most of this guide。 Solid book with lots of good and practical advice。 There were a lot of great tips for talking about various financial matters to children of different ages (though I don't spend any time with children so what do I know lol)。 If I ever raised a child I'd probably follow most of this guide。 。。。more

Audiobook。 I really liked the ideas for how to talk to a preschooler about all the financial topics。 There are many opinions about what the best money mindset to cultivate with kids are, and I liked the concept of saving, don’t overspend, don’t just blindly spend, use cash。 But then there were other things I disagreed with, mainly all the penny pinching things or some of the things about college。 I wish she would have talked more about if you go into debt for college it had better payout later! Getting a worthless degree and debt is MUCH worse than getting no college degree and no debt, in my opinion。 。。。more

The book has a few good ideas but I would have preferred a guide on general principles rather than the bullet point to do lists broken up by age groups as presented in the book。 This book covers all stages of life from age 3 to the mid twenties so if you only have one kid or your kids are roughly the same age, then 80% of the book won’t apply to you at any given moment。 That also means the resources and recommendations may well be out of date by the time my youngest is searching for college。 The The book has a few good ideas but I would have preferred a guide on general principles rather than the bullet point to do lists broken up by age groups as presented in the book。 This book covers all stages of life from age 3 to the mid twenties so if you only have one kid or your kids are roughly the same age, then 80% of the book won’t apply to you at any given moment。 That also means the resources and recommendations may well be out of date by the time my youngest is searching for college。 The early parts of the book are the best, with guidance on things you can implement at home right now, such as how to handle allowance, saving, kids spending their own money, and how to talk (and not talk) about money around your kids。 。。。more

One does not read personal finance advice books for the style。 They tend to be repetitive, chock-full of anecdotes crowd-sourced from family and friends, and larded with cursory citations to behavioral economics studies。 But the advice is often sound, and, heck, it was a quick read。 I gleaned a few ideas for use with our preschool and elementary school–aged children。

I found this really helpful。 I am doing a lot of what she's suggesting already (for myself as I don't have kids yet)。 I disagree with her viewpoint on several things and it's quite obvious we vote differently, but I respect her research and will walk away with good insights that she provided。 I found this really helpful。 I am doing a lot of what she's suggesting already (for myself as I don't have kids yet)。 I disagree with her viewpoint on several things and it's quite obvious we vote differently, but I respect her research and will walk away with good insights that she provided。 。。。more

I really liked how this book was structured。 By chapter, it hit on the key aspects of personal finances。 It started with the most important, communication methods with children。 Chapters were Saving, Working for money, reducing debt, spending wisely as a consumer, insurance, investments, giving back or charity, college tuition planning and a final chapter to consider as parents。Each chapter was has advice based on the age of the child。 Preschool, elementary school, middle school, high school, co I really liked how this book was structured。 By chapter, it hit on the key aspects of personal finances。 It started with the most important, communication methods with children。 Chapters were Saving, Working for money, reducing debt, spending wisely as a consumer, insurance, investments, giving back or charity, college tuition planning and a final chapter to consider as parents。Each chapter was has advice based on the age of the child。 Preschool, elementary school, middle school, high school, college and young adulthood。 A couple of items I thought were great points。- separating house chores from allowance。 House chores should be about helping each other as family。 Consider additional allowance for extra chores only (like cleaning the garage or seasonal item, not daily/weekly chores)- when kids are younger, deal with cash not bank accounts or online, so kids can physically see money going out as part of the transaction。- many of the value shopping and decision making points, our family shares with the author, so this will be a good reference book to have on our bookshelf as the kids get older。 。。。more

A good overall perspective for teaching the language of money to a diverse age group of kids。 Good resources for college too。

3。5/5I consider myself to be very well versed in personal finance topics, and while I didn’t gain any core insights, I did come away with a lot of ideas on how to raise my kids as it relates to money。 A great supplement to a family’s journey to financial freedom!

This is a good parenting book to keep around。 The money tips specifically grow with your child from pre-k to young adult out on their own。 Very practical, even if you know something about money as an adult - how do you pass that knowledge along? The college chapter alone was worth reading this book。 (But so were the Saving, Working & Spending chapters。)

I started reading this book not long after my son was born, and because it’s a dry topic, it took me forever to get through。 However, I think there’s a lot of good things in this book! Each concept (saving, working for your $, donating, investing, etc。) is a chapter, and after a brief introduction to the topic, the chapter provides suggestions on how to cultivate that skill in your children based on basic age ranges。 As a parent of a preschooler, working for your money and saving seemed the most I started reading this book not long after my son was born, and because it’s a dry topic, it took me forever to get through。 However, I think there’s a lot of good things in this book! This is the most helpful parenting book I've ever read。 The chapters are broken down by age group with straightforward advice (teach your preschoolers the names of the coins, take your middle schooler to a college campus, don't buy your high schooler a new car, etc。)。 I loved working through each chapter with my kids, and I am genuinely excited to keep it handy as they grow up。 This is the most helpful parenting book I've ever read。 The chapters are broken down by age group with straightforward advice (teach your preschoolers the names of the coins, take your middle schooler to a college campus, don't buy your high schooler a new car, etc。)。 I loved working through each chapter with my kids, and I am genuinely excited to keep it handy as they grow up。 。。。more

If you have a strong financial background then this book will probably be a waste of your time。 I found a few interesting recommendations in the book for how to respond to questions you may get from a kid, or when/how to bring up different money/finance topics, but overall, I didn't find this book too interesting。 Keep in mind, I'm a CPA, so there really wasn't anything new here for me。 If you have a strong financial background then this book will probably be a waste of your time。 I found a few interesting recommendations in the book for how to respond to questions you may get from a kid, or when/how to bring up different money/finance topics, but overall, I didn't find this book too interesting。 Keep in mind, I'm a CPA, so there really wasn't anything new here for me。 。。。more

Having 3 kids, I love this book! It has some good information and most importantly it's a very easyread。 Great to pick up, read a bit and put down, which is always good when you have kids! You can go right to your child's age, and she tells you her ideas。 Of course there is the usual stuff, but I feel it helped me talk to my kids about money。 Good discussion starter。 -Pam Having 3 kids, I love this book! This is full of really excellent, sound advice backed by the research that's been done into financial education and what is clearly a sound understanding of the tax/retirement system in the US。 This is full of really excellent, sound advice backed by the research that's been done into financial education and what is clearly a sound understanding of the tax/retirement system in the US。 。。。more

3。5 Honestly, I skimmed over a lot of the content, as I was looking for more information for my elementary school kids。 A lot of what was written was good information (and some common sense), but nothing particularly new。 I did like how she separated each section into what each age group needed to learn。 I think it would be helpful to revisit each section as needed。 However, I had just read the Raising Financially Confident Kids book, and a lot of the same ideas were in it (though that book is m 3。5 Honestly, I skimmed over a lot of the content, as I was looking for more information for my elementary school kids。 A lot of what was written was good information (and some common sense), but nothing particularly new。 I did like how she separated each section into what each age group needed to learn。 I think it would be helpful to revisit each section as needed。 However, I had just read the Raising Financially Confident Kids book, and a lot of the same ideas were in it (though that book is more dated), so I didn't find THIS book to be as helpful。 I think if you read this book first, the same could be said for the other book。 。。。more

Well researched and put together。 Much of the information I was already familiar with, but then that is my experience。 Well worth picking up for a refresher of your knowledge and money habits or to possibly learn something new。
