Possible contender for the Mock Caldecott Awards to be held in January 2022。 The story of a young girl from Taiwan who moves to America, leaving behind many relatives。。。especially her grandmother。

A little girl grows up seeing her beloved Popo, her grandmother, often in Taiwan。 They spend time together cuddling, eating and going to the park。 Then the girl’s family decide to move to San Diego, far away from Taiwan。 The girl goes to school in America with children of all colors。 She doesn’t speak English yet, but she is learning。 She calls her grandmother regularly。 When they return to Taiwan for a visit, it feels different and she can’t communicate in Chinese as well as she used to。 Her Po A little girl grows up seeing her beloved Popo, her grandmother, often in Taiwan。 They spend time together cuddling, eating and going to the park。 Then the girl’s family decide to move to San Diego, far away from Taiwan。 The girl goes to school in America with children of all colors。 She doesn’t speak English yet, but she is learning。 She calls her grandmother regularly。 When they return to Taiwan for a visit, it feels different and she can’t communicate in Chinese as well as she used to。 Her Popo’s house seems smaller though it smells just the same and her dumplings taste the same too。 When her grandmother gets sick, the girl wishes she lived closer, but a dream is just the right thing to being them together after all。This #ownvoices picture book is based on the author’s childhood, moving from Taipei to Albuquerque。 It shows how a long-distance connection between a grandparent and grandchild is possible, keeping memories fresh and new experiences shared with one another。 The book is filled with elements of Taiwan, such as New Year’s celebrations, dumplings and other food。 Smells of Taiwan are mentioned regularly, wafting through experiences and dreams。Kuo’s art is bold and beautiful。 She allows the little girl to age through the course of the story, toddling in the park then heading to school, becoming less round and more lean as the pages turn。 Popo also ages, the lines on her face more pronounced and her hair changing from black to gray。 It is subtle and beautifully done。A gentle story of immigration and continued connection to those left behind。 Appropriate for ages 3-5。 。。。more

The story of a young girl whos life changes but her love for her grandmother stays the same。Stunning。 Absolutely stunning。 A well written picture book needs to be properly appreciated when it comes around and this is certainly one of them。 The combination of words and illustrations pours emotion off the pages and into the readers heart。

Sweet story of the connection a girl has with her grandmother, even as the girl moves across the ocean to immigrate to America from Taiwan。Good for preschool and older kid storytimes。

This heartwarming book shows the intense bond between a little girl and her Popo (or grandmother)。 Over time and through the trials of immigrating to the USA, the little girl's bond remains strong over the years。 Even as her understanding of what used to be home and her home language begin to fade, their love never falters。 This was simply a beautiful story。 It shows a very current reality for children who have long distant relationships, showing video chat and trips by plane to see each other。 This heartwarming book shows the intense bond between a little girl and her Popo (or grandmother)。 Over time and through the trials of immigrating to the USA, the little girl's bond remains strong over the years。 Even as her understanding of what used to be home and her home language begin to fade, their love never falters。 This was simply a beautiful story。 It shows a very current reality for children who have long distant relationships, showing video chat and trips by plane to see each other。 The back matter includes notes from both the author and illustrator, exploring their own experiences and how those turned into this story。 The book also includes a glossary of terms used throughout the story。 I really appreciated that this book was #OwnVoices from both the author and the illustrator, and that the illustrations of Asia included the Chinese characters in the background。 I highly recommend。 。。。more

This lovely book about the special relationship between a young girl and her beloved Popo reminded me of the deep love shared between me and my own grandma, and between my children and their grandparents。 Even though the young girl and her Popo are separated by a move, their love remains。 The evocative text pairs perfectly with the beautiful illustrations to create a truly moving and heartwarming experience。

A young girl loves playing with her popo (grandmother)。 When her family moves across the world from Taiwan to San Diego, she misses her popo terribly。 When she returns to visit, she realizes she doesn't remember Taiwanese the way she used to--making it a little harder to communicate。 The story follows their shared love over time and distance, emphasizing the bond of family and the particular struggle of leaving family behind。 A young girl loves playing with her popo (grandmother)。 When her family moves across the world from Taiwan to San Diego, she misses her popo terribly。 When she returns to visit, she realizes she doesn't remember Taiwanese the way she used to--making it a little harder to communicate。 The story follows their shared love over time and distance, emphasizing the bond of family and the particular struggle of leaving family behind。 。。。more

I DREAM OF POPO is about a warm relationship between a little girl and her grandmother。 The young girl and her family emigrate from Taiwan to San Diego in the US and she leaves behind her popo。 It is about how their relationship endures across time and distance。 Taiwanese culture and language are also wonderfully woven into the story。 A wonderful book to share during Asian American Heritage Month, Grandparents Day or anytime of the year。

Oh my goodness this book。。。 this book resonates with me because I, too, have a special love for my grandmother。 The book is about a Chinese-American girl who comes to the United States at a young age and dreams of her Popo, or grandmother。 The part where the main character leaves her Popo behind and boards the plane breaks my heart。 The grandmother has so much love for her grandchild and she tells her to call every week to talk about her adventures。 Each time the child comes to visit Popo, it is Oh my goodness this book。。。 this book resonates with me because I, too, have a special love for my grandmother。 The book is about a Chinese-American girl who comes to the United States at a young age and dreams of her Popo, or grandmother。 The part where the main character leaves her Popo behind and boards the plane breaks my heart。 The grandmother has so much love for her grandchild and she tells her to call every week to talk about her adventures。 Each time the child comes to visit Popo, it is obvious that the things have changed around her from the window of the airport。 The book contains words in English and Chinese, which I liked since the targeted audience would most likely be Chinese-Americans。 Overall, the illustrations are so beautiful and the storyline so heartwarming。 I would recommend this book to someone who misses someone。 。。。more

This is a sweet story about the love between a young girl and her grandma and a connection that stays strong, even as it changes when the little girl moves from Taipei to the United States with her parents。 Wonderful reading to celebrate family bonds and to share experiences of new immigrants。

A wonderful story of a close relationship between grandmother and grandchild, beautiful times together and a special connection that transcends time, borders and languages。 From cover to cover, it exudes an exquisite nostalgia that I quite frankly can’t stop thinking about。 One of my absolute favorites this year。 Don’t miss this one!

Just like author Livia Blackburne, I was also born in Taiwan & came to the US。 at a young age。 However, I was fortunate that my grandparents also came to the US。 In fact, unlike other immigrant families, my grandparents actually came to the US first & settled down on the East Coast, & then we joined them a few years later。 I grew up being taken care of by my grandparents - esp my grandma (I call her Lao Lao 姥姥 in her native Northeast China dialect), as my mom was busy working。 So ~ I know, under Just like author Livia Blackburne, I was also born in Taiwan & came to the US。 at a young age。 However, I was fortunate that my grandparents also came to the US。 In fact, unlike other immigrant families, my grandparents actually came to the US first & settled down on the East Coast, & then we joined them a few years later。 I grew up being taken care of by my grandparents - esp my grandma (I call her Lao Lao 姥姥 in her native Northeast China dialect), as my mom was busy working。 So ~ I know, understand, & cherish how special the grandma-grandchild relationship is。 You don’t have to be a Taiwan immigrant or any immigrant to be able to relate to this story - anytime you experience a separation from your beloved grandparents, or any loved ones, you will understand this feeling & the story told in I DREAM OF POPO。 I esp love the details that are very Taiwan-specific by illustrator Julia Kuo。 I love how she put in that eponymous Tatung 大同 rice cooker, which everyone has in Taiwan, & even many of us here in the US have。 I’ve had my own Tatung rice cooker for about 20 years now & I would not give it up for any of those fancy, electronic rice cookers (no offense to those of you who actually own those fancy, electronic rice cookers)。 Also, I was fortunate to have ordered this book signed & personalized by Livia & Julia。 I chose to have the book made out to me, an adult in her 40s, even though most people would think - why would you not have the book personalized to your kids? (I swear, I'm not a bad mom!) And why, you ask? The answer is simple - when I was growing up, there were hardly any Asian American authors, much less any books written about Asian American experiences。 This book is a gift to myself, to the 6 year old me who came to the US & couldn’t find any stories about the Taiwan immigrant experience or about people that looked like me。 Even though I bought this book for my kids, for my family, it is really a heartfelt gift to myself。 。。。more
