Summary

'Will I really - I mean, really - actually take an axe, start bashing her on the head, smash her skull to pieces? 。 。 。 Will I really slip in sticky, warm blood, force the lock, steal, tremble, hide, all soaked in blood 。 。 。axe in hand? 。 。 。 Lord, will I really?'

A troubled young man commits the perfect crime - the murder of a vile pawnbroker whom no one will miss。 Raskolnikov is desperate for money, but convinces himself that his motive for the murder is to benefit mankind。 So begins one of the greatest novels ever written, a journey into the criminal mind, a police thriller, and a philosophical meditation on morality and redemption。

Oliver Ready's new translation of Dostoevsky's 'psychological record of a crime' gives his dark masterpiece of murder and pursuit a renewed vitality, expressing its jagged, staccato urgency and fevered atmosphere as never before。

All the best kills happen pretty early in the book。 After that, it's a lot of family drama and anxiety。 Still pretty good though。Could have used less antisemitism。Also, at the very end of the book, the author promises a sequel, but he still hasn't finished it yet。 A regular George RR Martin, this guy。 All the best kills happen pretty early in the book。 After that, it's a lot of family drama and anxiety。 Still pretty good though。Could have used less antisemitism。Also, at the very end of the book, the author promises a sequel, but he still hasn't finished it yet。 A regular George RR Martin, this guy。 。。。more

Another novel I was peer pressured into reading with the phrase "it'll change your life" and then it sort of just dissipated as soon as I closed it。 Another novel I was peer pressured into reading with the phrase "it'll change your life" and then it sort of just dissipated as soon as I closed it。 。。。more

No es un libro fácil de leer debido a la forma en que esta escrita。 Aun así, la historia te captura con cada capitulo queriendo saber que sucederá con el personaje principal。

Apparently I have a penchant for going into massive Russian Classics completely blind。 The clue, as ever, was very much in the title。。。Raskolnikov is unemployed, no longer able to afford his studies and getting by on handouts from his mother that she really cannot afford。As an intellectual, whilst still studying, he developed the idea that there are some people who are just above the rest, people for whom the normal rules and morals of Society should not need to apply, and consequently neither s Apparently I have a penchant for going into massive Russian Classics completely blind。 The clue, as ever, was very much in the title。。。Raskolnikov is unemployed, no longer able to afford his studies and getting by on handouts from his mother that she really cannot afford。As an intellectual, whilst still studying, he developed the idea that there are some people who are just above the rest, people for whom the normal rules and morals of Society should not need to apply, and consequently neither should their accompanying guilt and punishment。As all egotistical young folk do, he puts himself in this category。 That's how you find yourself, very early on in the novel, reading a surprisingly graphic pair of murders。 The novel then focuses on the ways this affects Raskolnikov's mind, how he unravels and how his relationships with those around him and with society at large become more and more fractured, strained and outright bizarre。The book itself becomes a rumination on what guilt does to a person, how different people deal with this。 (And why a murderer wouldn't lock his front door)。 There are moments of genuinely brilliant observational comedy that really lighten this narrative。Overall this is extremely interesting, and the thoughts and intellectual battle we see ongoing are both seemingly ahead of their time and very like reading a modern limited series TV thriller。 That said, I struggled with the level of unnecessary backstory for every minor character, with monologues that lasted pages and said very little and with the sometimes indecipherable difference between what a character was saying and what they were thinking。 This is a wonderful book, but it is hard work in some ways for the reader。 。。。more

Not sure how I'd never gotten around to these Russian classics until now。 Like Anna K, the prose style of Crime and Punishment is surprisingly modern for something written in 1866。 It's a great window into the intellectual currents and concerns of the 19th century, including a fascination with psychology which hasn't been taken over by Freud's ideas yet。 There are also elements of the crime drama and police procedural。 I was even reminded of Breaking Bad in Raskolnikov's motivations, though Rask Not sure how I'd never gotten around to these Russian classics until now。 Like Anna K, the prose style of Crime and Punishment is surprisingly modern for something written in 1866。 It's a great window into the intellectual currents and concerns of the 19th century, including a fascination with psychology which hasn't been taken over by Freud's ideas yet。 There are also elements of the crime drama and police procedural。 I was even reminded of Breaking Bad in Raskolnikov's motivations, though Raskolnikov was no Heisenberg。 And is there any piece of literature from the 19th century that doesn't involve at least one character suffering from tuberculosis? I'd never really appreciated the role of "consumption" in society until I read The Remedy: Robert Koch, Arthur Conan Doyle, and the Quest to Cure Tuberculosis。 。。。more

What a ride! This book was far darker and the crime was depicted in more graphic detail than I was expecting。 It was also a lot funnier than I was thought it would be。 I adored the humour in this book, lifting you up even in the darkest moments。 I liked the theories of the police officer in how guilt would make people behave in certain ways depending on their personality and feel like he wrote some really progressive views for his time。 I think this is definitely one that will stay with me for s What a ride! Dostoevsky took this question on his term and created may be the first psychological thriller, a deep, dark dive into human dilemma, the idea of right and wrong, what should be do or not to do。 Today Crime and punishment is suggested by many psychiatrist to know more about human nature。Lets Talk first about our major players。 This novel follows the story of Raskolnikov, a law student, riddled by his unbearable poverty and to meet family expectations, he first sold off his last valuable thing to a pawnbroker。 Only to kill him later。 This murder raises a number of moral dilemma to Raskolnikov。 Is he simply a murderer? Or he is just a pawn in the hands of situations? Should he be punished or not?We come to know about the crime on the very first part of this book, but the book goes on another 500 or so pages just discussing moral problems and complex mental state of a killer。 These are the questions what made this novel one of the greatest literary piece。 There are many other characters in this novel, each brought his or her unique characteristics and ideas。 Dostoevsky masterfully created such complex character only to pose more and more dark, darker philosophical and psychological questions。In many ways this novel shares dostoevsky's other work " Notes from underground"。 A young man tangled and seduced by the curse of urban life。 But its social critique cuts far deeper。 Raskolnikov rationalized that his own advancement at the cost of exploitative pawnbrokers death will benefit the society。 In doing so, he echoes the doctrines of egoism and utilitarianism embraced by many of Dostoevsky's contemporary writers。 And believing that his intelligence allows him to transcend moral taboos, Raskolnikov cuts himself off his own humanity。 Yet although the book is deeply concerned about morality, Crime and punishment never moralize or demoralize anything。 This book raised to fame not being a absurdly fascinating storyline and storytelling ability of the writer。 Each character has posed a moral choice and thin line between the difference of choices we make in our life。 So, what is Raskolnikov's punishment? As Dostoevsky put it so elegantly-" The man who has a conscience suffers Whilst acknowledging his sin。 This is his punishment"Favorite quotes:* "The fear of appearance is the first symptom of impotence"* “We're always thinking of eternity as an idea that cannot be understood, something immense。 But why must it be? What if, instead of all this, you suddenly find just a little room there, something like a village bath-house, grimy, and spiders in every corner, and that's all eternity is。 Sometimes, you know, I can't help feeling that that's what it is。” 。。。more

So many great books I have not read, so many。 So now I am correcting those lapses and C&P is one of them。 George Guidall is the narrator and I was, frankly, getting a bit tired of his voice but here he has toned it down and it works。 To bring on my train trip along with a lot of other 'never reads' such as Don Quixote and short stories of Charles Chesnutt。 I'm bringing way too many but what if I don't like one or two? A story from the underbelly of St。 Petersburg that packs several elements of a poverty-stricken society。 From the melancholy of a hopeful mother, the wishful yet ostensible fancies of a formerly well to-do widow to the efforts of the protagonist with a God-complex to prove his theory, all has been portrayed with painful rawness。 This slow-paced crime story explores the psychology of all its characters thoroughly。

The main character Raskolnikov can be frustrating and infuriating, but I love the psychology Dostoyevsky shows us through him and other characters。 What we think or who we think we are and who we truly are are at the heart of this tale。

Amazing book really。 Very powerful stuff, especially the scenes concerning the nature of crime, its necessity, its connection with societal progress, all told through brilliantly written prose and characters。 My one qualm about it is that it drags on way too much。
