Summary

First drink, first prank, first friend, first girl, last words… A poignant and moving crossover novel about making friends and growing up from American author, John Green。

Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words – and tired of his safe, boring and rather lonely life at home。 He leaves for boarding school filled with cautious optimism, to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the "Great Perhaps。" Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young。 Clever, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy, Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps。

Looking for Alaska brilliantly chronicles the indelible impact one life can have on another。

Tired of his mundane life, Miles “Pudge” Halter decides to move to a boarding school to find his “Great Perhaps” in life。 In Looking for Alaska by John Green, Pudge meets the Colonel, Alaska, Takumi, and Lara at his new school, and they become close friends that often get in trouble。 The novel interestingly explores the meaning of life by comparing it to a labyrinth, and it questions what needs to be done to escape life’s suffering。 Green gives each main character their own backstory and uses re Tired of his mundane life, Miles “Pudge” Halter decides to move to a boarding school to find his “Great Perhaps” in life。 In Looking for Alaska by John Green, Pudge meets the Colonel, Alaska, Takumi, and Lara at his new school, and they become close friends that often get in trouble。 The novel interestingly explores the meaning of life by comparing it to a labyrinth, and it questions what needs to be done to escape life’s suffering。 Green gives each main character their own backstory and uses realistic dialogue。 This provides detailed insight as to why the characters act a certain way and helps the characters seem more believable。 However, this also causes the novel to be excruciatingly detailed and slow at certain points, especially during the exposition。 Contrastingly, the ending feels rushed and fails to provide adequate details to answer the universal question。 Green answers the question by having Pudge realize, “I forgave [Takumi], and [Alaska] forgave us, and that we had to forgive to survive in the labyrinth” (Green 218)。 Although this is a great answer, Pudge reaches this conclusion almost out of nowhere with little build-up leading up to it。 Rather than expanding upon that answer gradually, the characters forgive each other instantaneously。 As a result, the ending seems unfinished, and it feels like something is missing from the story。 This isn’t the best book I’ve ever read; however, the character development and mystery that needed solving makes the book enjoyable。 Although this is an original story, I only recommend this book to young adolescents who want to read a coming-of-age novel with some romance and mystery。 There are more enjoyable books out there。 。。。more

Amazing book, definitely one of my favorites。 I could spend hours talking about the depth of this story。 It talks about topics the average writer might be scared to talk about。 John Green is an amazing author

I really enjoy John Green's writing style。 I've read a couple of his books but I found I liked the Fault in Our Stars better。 This one was a little slow to start, then it ramped up and left me a little unsatisfied at the end。 Overall, not a bad read, but probably not one I'll remember。 I really enjoy John Green's writing style。 I've read a couple of his books but I found I liked the Fault in Our Stars better。 This one was a little slow to start, then it ramped up and left me a little unsatisfied at the end。 Overall, not a bad read, but probably not one I'll remember。 。。。more

For once the show was betterThe show provided a lot more depth and conflict than the book did making the show more enticing to watch。 I watched the show in the middle of reading the book so I was shocked how some things were changed。

An excellent young adult book by John Green。 The book teaches us a lot about forgiveness and getting out of labyrinth in life。

I loved this book so much and would definitely recommend it! Alaska was such an interesting character despite being very similar to John Green's usual characters。 I also thought the storyline was so interesting and it didn't go where I expected it to。 Chip and Miles' friendship was also unexpectedly sweet and I really liked that aspect of the story。 It was also very well written and there were so many lines that I loved。 Overall I very much enjoyed this。 <3 I loved this book so much and would definitely recommend it! Beautiful and challenging。 This was a quick read that brought to light more questions than answers but that in itself is why we read, live, and hope。 Incredible writing and story。

Read this in 8th grade。 Meant to be made into a teen flick in the similar lines to 13 reasons why。 Hopefully it is better than the aforementioned adaptation。

In the beginning of the book I didn’t like it very much, though the ending made up for all those moments。 It was incredibly interesting to read about the impact Alaska had on them, Miles especially。

Thinking Thing

I absolutely loved this book。 It really made me think。 After I finished it, I spent about two hours thinking about and searching for the meaning of a Great Perhaps and thinking over what my labyrinth of suffering was。
