"The most merciful thing in the world， I think， is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents。 We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity， and it was not meant that we should voyage far。 The sciences， each straining in its own direction， have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality， and of our frightful position therein， that we shall either go mad f "The most merciful thing in the world， I think， is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents。 We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity， and it was not meant that we should voyage far。 The sciences， each straining in its own direction， have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality， and of our frightful position therein， that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age。"That is the opening paragraph of "The Call of Cthulhu"， and it is the perfect encapsulation of Lovecraft's style of horror。 It's not about jump scares or gore， it is about our smallness in the universe， and the unease and uncomfortableness that inspires。 Cthulhu， and the many other， less famous Lovecraftian Gods， aren't just scary monsters， they're personifications of the vast uncaring cosmos， the mere sight of which is enough to drive Lovecraft's characters to madness。 All of that is wrapped up in this really beautiful edition， surprisingly easy to handle for its size。With all that said， there is one big problem with Lovecraft's writing。 None of his stories were published as proper books in his lifetime， only serialized in niche pulp and science fiction magazines。 This means he never had an editor， some of his stories didn't even get a second draft， and boy does it show。 It's honestly infuriating how so many of them could've been so much better with just a few brief edits。 In "The Colour out of Space" you're effectively told how the story ends right at the very start， "At the Mountains of Madness" is one of Lovecraft's longest stories， but really， really doesn't need to be， its filled with dull， repetitive descriptions that make the most incredible things sound mundane， if I had taken a shot every time he described the scary "Cyclopean masonry" I would've been lying intoxicated on the floor before reaching the end of page 3。 Because of this， I definitely wouldn't recommend trying to read these in chronological order， cherry pick the best ones （"The Whisperer in Darkness" and "The Shadow over Innsmouth" are my two personal favourites） and skip the rest。 Even in his best stories， Lovecraft has a distinctive style that takes some getting used to， a little like Tolkien， I would personally recommend reading this on an atmospherically dark night right before you go to sleep。 Sweet dreams。 。。。more

I really don't like dnfing books。 But I just couldn't be bothered with this one。 I knew HP Lovecraft was really racist going into this， but I wasn't ready for how apparent his racism would be in his writing。 The most obvious example of this was the name of the cat in "The Rats In the Walls"， but there were also so many stories where humans cross breaded with creatures and created these horrible monstrosities。 And of course white people were always the victims。 His writing also just didn't suit m I really don't like dnfing books。 But I just couldn't be bothered with this one。 I knew HP Lovecraft was really racist going into this， but I wasn't ready for how apparent his racism would be in his writing。 The most obvious example of this was the name of the cat in "The Rats In the Walls"， but there were also so many stories where humans cross breaded with creatures and created these horrible monstrosities。 And of course white people were always the victims。 His writing also just didn't suit my tastes。 It was just too verbose and pretentious for me。 I really wanted to finish this， especially because there were some stories I enjoyed and so many people whose work I do enjoy were inspired by Lovecraft， like Guillermo Del Toro and Niel Gaiman， but I just couldn't。 。。。more

Abordar a un autor tan icónico como Lovecraft siempre es complicado si se entra con tanto retraso como yo， porque precisamente por su influencia en la literatura fantástica posterior es tan importante， puede pasar que todo su material te suene a superado， incluso a estereotipado。。。 cuando precisamente él es el autor de dichos estereotipos。Así， es cierto que algunos de los relatos me han sonado algo sobrepasados por el tiempo， incómodamente racistas o involuntariamente paródicos （algo a lo que pu Abordar a un autor tan icónico como Lovecraft siempre es complicado si se entra con tanto retraso como yo， porque precisamente por su influencia en la literatura fantástica posterior es tan importante， puede pasar que todo su material te suene a superado， incluso a estereotipado。。。 cuando precisamente él es el autor de dichos estereotipos。Así， es cierto que algunos de los relatos me han sonado algo sobrepasados por el tiempo， incómodamente racistas o involuntariamente paródicos （algo a lo que puede ser que contribuya la esforzada， aunque algo excesiva labor del locutor y la postproducción de este audiolibro）。Sin embargo， el que tuvo retuvo， e incluso desde mi posición de lector veterano de novelas de terror， el cuento en el cual un grupo de hombres son arrastrados irremisiblemente desde una playa a las profundidades del mar， ante el horror del narrador， es muy impactante。 E igualmente， el relato estrella de la historia， La Llamada de Cthulhu， sigue teniendo fuerza hoy día， por la manera en la que las pistas que el protagonista va reuniendo， como un mosaico de pequeños relatos de fenómenos inexplicables y cultos atroces， van dando forma， uno a uno， a una realidad aterradora en la que el destino del mundo pende frágilmente del sueño de una titánica criatura ancestral。 Desde luego， un relato nada desdeñable， y que no me sorprende su influencia en literatura， cine， y hasta manifestaciones modernas de ocio como los videojuegos o los juegos de rol。 。。。more

2。5 realmente。Como todos los libros de relatos， unos me gustaron y otros no。 Lo que no me permitió disfrutar de la lectura fue la edición， es pequeña y portátil， hay que reconocerlo， pero de vez en cuando tiene faltas ortográficas， una letra gigante y， en general， una mala maquetación a mi gusto。 Además de que constantemente sentía como si los relatos estuvieran muy resumidos， pero， claro， como no he leído los originales， no puedo opinar al respecto。

Buenas historias， mala transcripciónLa recopilación me pareció muy buena， pero algunas historias tienen grandes problemas de conversión de algunas letras ej: rn se convirtió a m， había pasó a ser habla， etc。 Ese tipo de problemas son molestos y distraen de la lectura （sin este inconveniente le habría puesto 5 estrellas）
