2。5 ⭐ I just。。。 why? Pros: the drawing style is AMAZING! So much detail and quality is placed into each panel。 There is no denying the skills of the team behind this manga。 The recipes are interesting and the character design is beautiful。 Cons: I can't get into ecchi that involves middle school age kids。 That's where I draw the line。 It's more awkward than funny。 The pun stopped being funny by the 3rd round。 The heavy handedness of which we are told how great/important the female lead is became 2。5 ⭐ I just。。。 why? Food Wars! perfectly encapsulates my anxiety at breaking back into manga after a long dark age。 It’s an addictive read, beautifully foodie (with recipes, yes!) and has set up a great dynamic between characters (I appreciate the mini story at the end reconnecting us to the girl who samples the squid at the beginning, lovely touch)。。。 But。 And it’s a big but unfortunately: the food-gasm humour。 This both works really well and feels massively intrusive。 We get thrown in at the deep end with the squ Food Wars! perfectly encapsulates my anxiety at breaking back into manga after a long dark age。 It’s an addictive read, beautifully foodie (with recipes, yes!) and has set up a great dynamic between characters (I appreciate the mini story at the end reconnecting us to the girl who samples the squid at the beginning, lovely touch)。。。 But。 And it’s a big but unfortunately: the food-gasm humour。 This both works really well and feels massively intrusive。 We get thrown in at the deep end with the squid right at the start。 There’s one or two chaps, but it’s predominantly women depicted in (usually compromising) foodgasm, the almost constant pantyshot angles, the objectification that just gets uncomfortable quickly especially when they’re unwilling。。。 It’s a great story but for me personally it gets a bit much (something in a fantasy setting I can maybe gloss over but when it’s a contemporary story? No, no thank you。) so I’ll be giving future volumes of this a pass。 。。。more

I've wanted to read this manga for a long time, and once I saw that the library had an e-copy, I jumped at the chance。 It was a fun, crazy manga and as a foodie, one that had me salivating。 Very Tournament of Champions feel, but with much younger chefs。 I am sad that there's apparently no romance, but the story is so good by itself I'll forgive and continue reading。 I've wanted to read this manga for a long time, and once I saw that the library had an e-copy, I jumped at the chance。 It was a fun, crazy manga and as a foodie, one that had me salivating。 Very Tournament of Champions feel, but with much younger chefs。 I am sad that there's apparently no romance, but the story is so good by itself I'll forgive and continue reading。 。。。more

This was great。 I have watched all of the anime and have now started to read the manga since I love the story so much。 I think its so much fun and I love the inclusion of recipes within the manga。 I also like seeing the little things that are different between the anime and manga (like it being called the 'Elite Ten' in the anime, but the 'Council of Ten Masters' in the manga)。 This was great。 I have watched all of the anime and have now started to read the manga since I love the story so much。 I think its so much fun and I love the inclusion of recipes within the manga。 I also like seeing the little things that are different between the anime and manga (like it being called the 'Elite Ten' in the anime, but the 'Council of Ten Masters' in the manga)。 。。。more

Hearing a lot about Manga here lately and I wanted to give it a go。 Unfortunately, I just think it's not for me。 I'm not sure if it's because it's YA or just the story line or what。。。。 so I don't plan to continue on with any of the other Volumes。 However, I do plan on trying some different ones later on down the road。 Hearing a lot about Manga here lately and I wanted to give it a go。 Unfortunately, I just think it's not for me。 I'm not sure if it's because it's YA or just the story line or what。。。。 so I don't plan to continue on with any of the other Volumes。 However, I do plan on trying some different ones later on down the road。 。。。more

Food Wars! Vol。 1 This is the first volume in the Food Wars anime。 In this one you first meet Soma at his family restaurant having a cook off against his father。 By the end of the volume his dad is overseas cooking and Soma is at the best cooking school there is in Japan。 Hope you enjoy。

In this manga we follow Soma Yukihira as he works in his family restaurant, however, one day his father comes home and says that he will be closing the restaurant for a couple of years while he travels and Soma will be attending an elite culinary school。When Soma arrives he finds out that all the students there are from very wealthy families, whereas Soma comes from a fairly poor family and everyone is judging him。 He needs to prove that he deserves his place at this school。I really enjoyed this In this manga we follow Soma Yukihira as he works in his family restaurant, however, one day his father comes home and says that he will be closing the restaurant for a couple of years while he travels and Soma will be attending an elite culinary school。When Soma arrives he finds out that all the students there are from very wealthy families, whereas Soma comes from a fairly poor family and everyone is judging him。 He needs to prove that he deserves his place at this school。I really enjoyed this manga, and even though the artwork is in black and white the food looks soo good! It even includes a recipe that Soma used during his 'audition'。 I do find Soma a bit arrogant but I guess he needs to be confident to prove himself in the school。 I'm really looking forward to reading the next instalment。 。。。more

Not quite as enjoyable as the show, I think anime is a better medium for food content than manga, but still really good。

I loved reading Food Wars! Volume 1。 It reminds me so much of me going to culinary school at Johnson & Wales University! My school wasn't as cutthroat as Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute, but nonetheless, the story brings me back to when I went to JWU。 I really do love the fact that the author gives the readers detailed information about what these characters are eating and what each ingredient brings to that dish。 I also love that there are other cultural cuisines such as: American, Italian, In I loved reading Food Wars! PHEW! Finally finished! So, Food Wars! is a prime example of fairly typical shounen manga, which usually has:- heated battles- intense rivalry that gradually morphs into friendship- inconceivable concepts (that would not ordinarily exist in real life)- protagonists whose skills improve over time- ridiculous setups (especially for the battles)- scantily clad female characters/sighThis manga has it all。 Particularly the final point。The only food manga that I've read had been Yakitate!! Japan, Volume 1 (which is, in its own way, absolutely ridiculous!), and so had some concept of the ridiculous reactions of the tasters。 "Food Wars!" takes it to a whole 'nother level。 The reactions of particularly the female tasters, tend to devolve into situations where they are so overwhelmed by the taste, they end up in various states of undress and ecstasy。And yet。。。 where this series shines (if you can continually ignore the single-a page spreads of over-the-top reactions) is the depiction of the food。 There is an incredible amount of research, dedication on how the food looked, was prepared, research on how the food could conceivably work in real life, and even how they could be prepared in real life。Also, being a fan of "Masterchef" and "Iron Chef", this manga hit the right spot in terms of food so delicious looking, I wished it existed in real life。The only thing I'm sad about this whole series is (view spoiler)[that nothing eventuated romantically。 Everything was insinuated, particularly in the epilogue, but nothing satisfactorily happened。 It makes my shoujo heart so sad! (hide spoiler)]。So: read this for the amazing food battles (and beautifully rendering of dishes and skills displayed by the chefs), but only if you can stomach the near-constant (and eventually, fairly predictable) reactions to good food。 。。。more

Yeah so I didn't really like it。I should at least mention that the concept sounds enjoyable and I can see why people like it。Basically it's as if Luffy and Sanji had a baby。I guess I'm just tired of the tropes that are present in all other manga。 You know the ones。 Either orphaned or at least one parent dead。 A mentor figure to strive up to and to surpass ala king of the pirates。 Cutthroat bullies out for blood。 The MC who's free spirited, slightly careless, and manages to be OP。 All set in a co Yeah so I didn't really like it。I should at least mention that the concept sounds enjoyable and I can see why people like it。Basically it's as if Luffy and Sanji had a baby。I guess I'm just tired of the tropes that are present in all other manga。 You know the ones。 Either orphaned or at least one parent dead。 A mentor figure to strive up to and to surpass ala king of the pirates。 Cutthroat bullies out for blood。 The MC who's free spirited, slightly careless, and manages to be OP。 All set in a competitive school。It's a shame its so sexualized cause then I'd give it another shot。 And I understand it's done for comedic effect, but personally it didn't quite cross the line into the funny enough territory, so it comes off as unnecessarily sexual。 Also too many series try to pull this off so its not even original。 。。。more
