The unforgettable, inspiring story of a teenage girl growing up in a rural Nigerian village who longs to get an education so that she can find her "louding voice" and speak up for herself, The Girl with the Louding Voice is a simultaneously heartbreaking and triumphant tale about the power of fighting for your dreams。 Despite being sold first as a child bride and then as an unpaid maid to a wealthy family in Lagos, Adunni never loses sight of her goal of escaping the life of poverty she was born into so that she can build the future she chooses for herself - and help other girls like her do the same。 Her spirited determination to find joy and hope in even the most difficult circumstances imaginable will "break your heart and then put it back together again" (Jenna Bush Hager on The Today Show) even as Adunni shows us how one courageous young girl can inspire us all to reach for our dreams。。。and maybe even change the world。

Adunni and her story will stay with me for a long time!

I put this book down initially, but decided to give it another chance when friends raved about it。 They were right。 Once I got used to the broken English I quickly became engrossed in the story。 I think the ending lends itself to a sequel and hope the author is writing one。 I am curious to know what happens to Adunni!

I loved that the story was told in a Nigerian version of English。 I hated what the female child protagonist had to live through。 When people demand we get rid of law enforcement in the United States or that we have a real problem with toxic masculinity Stateside, I wish those on the frontlines of these issues would read this book。 I was simultaneously reading Know My Name by Chanel Miller, the Emily Doe who was raped in 2015 on Stanford’s campus。 She pressed charges。 Although Chanel had a horrib I loved that the story was told in a Nigerian version of English。 I hated what the female child protagonist had to live through。 When people demand we get rid of law enforcement in the United States or that we have a real problem with toxic masculinity Stateside, I wish those on the frontlines of these issues would read this book。 I was simultaneously reading Know My Name by Chanel Miller, the Emily Doe who was raped in 2015 on Stanford’s campus。 She pressed charges。 Although Chanel had a horrible 3 1/2 years fighting her perpetrator in the courts, I say, “At least, she had somewhere to fight。” Adunni had no one to fight for her。 Indeed, she had to run away alone or be killed as the only justice was tribal justice and the woman was always to blame - and murdered for it。 Adunni was determined, a fighter, a calm presence when all around her others were abusive and self-serving。 She inspired me。 Thanks to Abe Dare I got a real peek inside a young adolescent girl’s life in Nigeria。 It makes me want to fight for a better system in my own country without dismantling it completely。 。。。more

The narrator for this audiobook is brilliant! It took me a little bit to get an ear for it, but I’m so glad I stuck with it。

4。5 stars。 The spirit, determination and wisdom Of the protagonist keeps the reader entertained。 Her recitation of facts about Nigeria are key to understanding both the past and present day Nigeria。 What a blessing this book is。 There are many times that Adunni tells/reflects a situation for what it is。。。 much to the surprise of her audience。 My favorite part is where she told Big Madam that she was supporting slavery and a victim of slavery!

Amelia

This book should be super depressing, (and tbf it kind of is) but Adunni is so charming and witty that it balances out。

This book was so beautiful in it’s simplicity。 I was hooked from the very beginning。 I listened to it as an audiobook, which was so well done that the narrator deserves an academy award (if there is such a thing for book narration)。

In Abi Dare's The Girl With The Louding Voice, we meet Adunni。 A young Nigerian girl who lives in a village and dreams of getting an education, of bettering her life and the lives of girls like her。 But Adunni's life is by no means easy。 Her mother passes away and her father can't afford to send her to school, and when she's 14, he sells her off as a child bride to an old man。 She's Morufu's third wife, and while she has food to eat and a place to lay her head at night, things are not good。 Her In Abi Dare's The Girl With The Louding Voice, we meet Adunni。 A young Nigerian girl who lives in a village and dreams of getting an education, of bettering her life and the lives of girls like her。 But Adunni's life is by no means easy。 Her mother passes away and her father can't afford to send her to school, and when she's 14, he sells her off as a child bride to an old man。 She's Morufu's third wife, and while she has food to eat and a place to lay her head at night, things are not good。 Her new husband wants her to have a baby boy despite her still being a child herself, and his first wife treats her like scum。So many things go wrong in her life, and when Adunni flees to Lagos and gets work as a housekeeper, things just get worse。 There's a light at the end of the story that keeps Adunni hopeful, and while she keeps her incredible sense of humour and feisty spirit throughout, this novel exhausted me。I get why this book is so popular and I'm not saying it was badly written by any means, but I'm so tired of stories of black girls and women suffering, of our resilience being turned into survivor porn, of reading about lives we have to claw our way through。I get it, but I'm tired。 And I don't know how to turn that into something poetic。 。。。more

A book about the treatment of young girls in Nigeria。 The heroine, Adunni, is desperate to become educated and teach, but her father marries her off to an old man so he can love off her bride price。 She runs away after her main support in the house (the second wife, Adunni is the third) is no longer able to help。 She ends up as a housemaid/slave in Lagos。 A tale of hardship, but ultimately hopeful

I enjoyed this story of a girl from Nigeria & her quest to find her voice & fulfill her dream of getting an education。 The narrator was superb, with an authentic African accent。 Lots of fun cultural insights & hear characters!

The debut novel of a talented writer, The Girl with the Louding Voice is quite simply NOT a book。 It has a pulse that rumbles through it as its principal character, Adunni runs from one painful life experience to another。 It begins with a whimper as Adunni is sold as a child bride。 It grows to a cry as she witnesses the death of one true friend in the household where she is the third wife, expected to produce a male heir。 Finally, that pulse roars against corruption, slavery, and oppression。 One The debut novel of a talented writer, The Girl with the Louding Voice is quite simply NOT a book。 It has a pulse that rumbles through it as its principal character, Adunni runs from one painful life experience to another。 It begins with a whimper as Adunni is sold as a child bride。 It grows to a cry as she witnesses the death of one true friend in the household where she is the third wife, expected to produce a male heir。 Finally, that pulse roars against corruption, slavery, and oppression。 One opens this book expecting words on paper。 I opened it and Dover into a life so powerful that I quake a bit with the her-story。 Be open and brave, future readers。 This is a promise to be delivered when you meet Adunni。 。。。more

I was emotionally invested in the main character from the start。 I learned a lot about Nigeria while I cheered her on。 Cleverly written, an engaging story。 I was very surprised that it was written in contemporary society, once again I am reminded of my very good fortune in this world。

I'll use a term I think is way overused, and one that I only use when I think it's wildly appropriate, even necessary。 This book is lyrical - the protagonist's imperfect English has a rhythm and loveliness that is a pleasure to read。Her open heart, and sing song language minimizes the horror of what she writes about。 Grief, loneliness, terrible abuse - there's a sense of acceptance that this is the way the world is, even as she dreams of a different world, taking desperate risks and enduring mis I'll use a term I think is way overused, and one that I only use when I think it's wildly appropriate, even necessary。 This book is lyrical - the protagonist's imperfect English has a rhythm and loveliness that is a pleasure to read。Her open heart, and sing song language minimizes the horror of what she writes about。 Grief, loneliness, terrible abuse - there's a sense of acceptance that this is the way the world is, even as she dreams of a different world, taking desperate risks and enduring misery to try to reach the world she imagines。 The book is a bit of a fairy tale - evil characters abound, our heroine is lovely and good, offering comfort even to people who have mistreated her and dreaming big dreams, there is sort of a fairy godmother character, someone who provides a bridge from where Adduni is to where she wants to be, and other minor helpful characters who allow her to survive terrible circumstances。 The fairy tale aspect is satisfying, but I couldn't help but thinking of the thousands of women in similar circumstances who don't have helpers and fairy god people, who just live in misery until they die a tragic and untimely death。 Because life isn't a fairy tale。But this was a touching, satisfying, lyrical read - ultimately a feel good story, despite its depiction of the brutal realities of many poor women in Nigeria。 。。。more

Wow, there was a lot to unpack with this novel and to be honest, I'm still thinking about it。 This left me with so many feelings ranging from sadness and anger to hope, admiration and so much more。 Adunni is a character I won't soon forget。 Note, the writing style of this book does take some getting used to, but once you've adjusted, you won't put this down。 All the stars for Abi Daré! First, I have to say that the woman who read the audiobook did a PHENOMENAL job。 She truly captured the fear, pain, sadness that was felt throughout the story。 This is a wonderful story of perseverance through immensely hard obstacles。

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this, as the narration was difficult to listen to to begin with, but eventually I couldn’t stop listening。 The protagonist’s is so naive and innocent as she endures horrors on her journey to achieve her dreams of finishing school and becoming a teacher。 You’ll find yourself cheering her on all the way, even as she faces villains like her husband and Big Madame。
