I feel some of the rules are totally outdated, however, this book was written years ago so I can understand that they don't apply。 There are still a lot that I think are legit and useful as a reminder。 I feel some of the rules are totally outdated, however, this book was written years ago so I can understand that they don't apply。 There are still a lot that I think are legit and useful as a reminder。 。。。more

While there were definitely a few "rules" that I took something away from, I was largely unimpressed by the book。 It felt extremely black and white, which I expected to some degree, but it also was quite dated in some of its advice。 The writer came across quite judgemental towards those who don't orient their entire life's being towards work and climbing the corporate ladder。 That made this quite offputting to read at times。 We're all different and work isn't life。 To add to this, there were qui While there were definitely a few "rules" that I took something away from, I was largely unimpressed by the book。 It felt extremely black and white, which I expected to some degree, but it also was quite dated in some of its advice。 The writer came across quite judgemental towards those who don't orient their entire life's being towards work and climbing the corporate ladder。 That made this quite offputting to read at times。 We're all different and work isn't life。 To add to this, there were quite a few contradictions and repetitive, generic rules that I just ended up skipping past because it was more of the same。 Again, to reiterate, there were certainly a few takeaways - but I didn't really come across anything that made me feel like I have the keys that no one else knows of as the book suggests。 。。。more

Great primer for people either starting their career or being stuck oblivious to the corporate "game"。 It helped me rethink some of my assumptions about work and increased my chances for a promotion。The book needs to be taken with a grain of salt, though, as it is written in a very US-centric style。 Some of the techniques are culture-dependent and can not be applied to all work environments。 Great primer for people either starting their career or being stuck oblivious to the corporate "game"。 It helped me rethink some of my assumptions about work and increased my chances for a promotion。The book needs to be taken with a grain of salt, though, as it is written in a very US-centric style。 Some of the techniques are culture-dependent and can not be applied to all work environments。 。。。more

This was a fairly easy yet educating readThe book is 10 rules divided into 10 sub-rules each。 I love the book structure which helps to focus on the important parts and keep everything in mind。 The most useful thing is that it helped me act in a professional way with colleagues, bosses and clients。Of course not all rules apply everywhere they seem to be most suitable to a western sort of work environment。

I finished reading The Rules of Work by Richard Templar today 11th October 2020 (my birthday 🥳), It is a really good book, I will rate it with 5 stars 5/5。 ⭐The writer, Richard Templar, is a British author who has written many self-development books so far。 And he has more than 30 years of experience in the business world。This book contains 110 rules, or you can say 110 advices, for workers who want to be successful。 The book is very easy to read。 And I agree with 98% of what is written in it。 H I finished reading The Rules of Work by Richard Templar today 11th October 2020 (my birthday 🥳), It is a really good book, I will rate it with 5 stars 5/5。 ⭐The writer, Richard Templar, is a British author who has written many self-development books so far。 And he has more than 30 years of experience in the business world。This book contains 110 rules, or you can say 110 advices, for workers who want to be successful。 The book is very easy to read。 And I agree with 98% of what is written in it。 However, I wish I read it long time ago, but anyway I am glad I read it now and not later。 I would recommend it for new workers to benefit from the advices early, but other workers will benefit from it too。 It is great as a gift for graduates and new workers。 If I was a manager, I would give this book to my employees to have a successful team。This book is the second book I read for author Richard Templar after The Rules to Break。 And it is not the last I am planning to read more for him。 。。。more

I was first given this by a manager at the age of 18 in my first job。 She seen things in me that I had not yet realised and wanted to help me hone the skills。。。 I red it and have red it many times over the 17 years since。It’s easy to read。 Easy to refer to and is absolutely on the money with advice。 Highly recommended as a read but also as a gift to someone you see who has potential。

هذا هو النوع اللي ما أقدر أبلعه من كتب تطوير الذات، سيء جدًا وغير أخلاقي رغم ان المؤلف في البداية نبّه على كونه كتاب أخلاقي !

If you're just starting to get into work and read a bit about the tricks in workplaces then this will come in handy for sure。It's actually stating common sense and you might be following many of the rules naturally already, but I figured it helped me be more aware of them and that contributes to more control over what I do and how I do it。So, depending on how much you already know, this book can be very useful and clarifying or absolutely useless and lacking any new point to teach。 If you're just starting to get into work and read a bit about the tricks in workplaces then this will come in handy for sure。It's actually stating common sense and you might be following many of the rules naturally already, but I figured it helped me be more aware of them and that contributes to more control over what I do and how I do it。So, depending on how much you already know, this book can be very useful and clarifying or absolutely useless and lacking any new point to teach。 。。。more

I've been struggling with my work-life ever since being forced to work from home, making me grumpy and unmotivated。 I love(d) my job, and I just couldn't understand why I was finding it so much more difficult working from home。 I wanted to read this to help me gain back my focus, but I feel it's done more than that。 The things I were doing wrong were actively sabotaging my self-esteem; bitching, gossiping, focusing on things that don't really matter。 Taking on work after hours just to have somet I've been struggling with my work-life ever since being forced to work from home, making me grumpy and unmotivated。 I love(d) my job, and I just couldn't understand why I was finding it so much more difficult working from home。 I wanted to read this to help me gain back my focus, but I feel it's done more than that。 The things I were doing wrong were actively sabotaging my self-esteem; bitching, gossiping, focusing on things that don't really matter。 Taking on work after hours just to have something to do。 It's made me realise that despite what was going on, I still need to act like I was in the office again。 A lot of these rules I was unknowingly already doing, but they were harder to demonstrate whilst your colleagues are scattered across the country。 Others left me feeling a pang of pain in my heart as I realised -this- is where I was going wrong。 But it's no worries! That's the whole point of the book。 I give a book five stars if it went above and beyond being a 'good book', those that make me want to change my life in some way or leave a lasting impact。 However it isn't perfect, some of the Rules actively leave out those who have different cultures or languages, eg。 the Rules about having the social life everybody else has, drinking alcohol, after-work activities。 It has an assumption that everybody reading the book is a non-religious person with no childcare responsibilities, but it does stress that some rules can be written over。 A great read that I'd go through again and pin up quotes on my corkboard。 。。。more

The book is pretty good for people who start out in the work life and it also had a few parts I didn’t yet know how to implement, which helped me。 Some things, though seem to be a little manipulative or too tactical which don’t adhere to my personal standards。

Interesting book I must say。 Templar refers to those who follow these rules, as "Rules players", knowing when and how to apply the advise he writes。 I found the chapter on "Developing a niche for yourself", an eye opener。 I agree with every detail he writes about that。 You have got to stand out in a company, have a capability or trait,no-one has in the company, regardless of how ridiculous it looks or seems。 It gives one an edge, an advantage over the other employees。Truer words have never been Interesting book I must say。 Templar refers to those who follow these rules, as "Rules players", knowing when and how to apply the advise he writes。 I found the chapter on "Developing a niche for yourself", an eye opener。 I agree with every detail he writes about that。 You have got to stand out in a company, have a capability or trait,no-one has in the company, regardless of how ridiculous it looks or seems。 It gives one an edge, an advantage over the other employees。Truer words have never been spoken about attitude been a major factor in been promoted。 You may have the qualifications, but if you don't think and act like the role you want, as Richard puts it, you will have a superior who is a moron, with far less qualifications than you。So far I am gaining interesting insight on how to be a "rules player" as Richard puts it。 Recommend it to people in particular, changing a career or starting out in their working career。 Not forgetting those who need to change their strategy of working。 。。。more

Good book with lots of tips but some times too pragmatic / we should also be reinventing work places to value substance over style。 Still, a really good important book to read for the real world

The author here assumes, throughout much of his book, that his reader is someone in the corporate world (a company setting) and, in that sense, attempts to lay down, in simple words, the rules to ensure a speedy path up the career ladder。 Overall, the book is straightforward and doesn’t leave much to ponder about。 For a person well raised and possesses a good range of soft skills, the book is rather redundant; however, for someone who is indeed struggling in their career, the book could be illum The author here assumes, throughout much of his book, that his reader is someone in the corporate world (a company setting) and, in that sense, attempts to lay down, in simple words, the rules to ensure a speedy path up the career ladder。 Overall, the book is straightforward and doesn’t leave much to ponder about。 For a person well raised and possesses a good range of soft skills, the book is rather redundant; however, for someone who is indeed struggling in their career, the book could be illuminating。One of the first rules that come to mind (from a total of 109) is ‘under promise and over deliver’ (RULE 5)。 “If you know you can do it by Wednesday always say Friday,” Mr。 Templar recommends。 This point resonated with me well, and it does make sense and gives one less pressure to meet a deadline。 RULE 10 also comes to mind here (‘Develop the right attitude’), where the author reaffirms that “the right attitude is head up, never moaning, always positive and upbeat, constantly looking for the advantage and the edge。” In RULE 21, the author reminds the reader to ‘be cool’ where I couldn’t agree more。 One must indeed keep their composure and appear in control of things regardless of the circumstances。 Two rules later, the author says “always make your signature big – big signature, big person,” as a way to emphasize the importance of how written things matter。In RULE 50, the author advises to ‘keep records’ at all times。 Don’t delete old emails, he warns, as they can come in handy to settle a dispute or remind someone of an initial agreement。 Before reading this rule, I was thinking to delete some of my old emails to save some space, but Mr。 Templar made my job easier by not needing to go back and determine which email I should delete, I’ll be keeping them for now。 ‘Put things in perspective’ is another important rule that I feel many people often miss, and a good habit to build。 After all, things might not be as serious as many presume。‘Ask questions in times of conflict’ (RULE 80) came across to me as a good strategy to apply while in conflicts, it can reduce the tension and shift the attention to something else。 Moreover, ‘Know the psychology of promotion’ (RULE 102) was an eye opening rule where the author lists several possible reasons behind offering a new post, but perhaps most notably was to get rid of someone by offering the new post to an unsuitable candidate to have grounds for sacking them。 In a way the author is trying to be preemptive here。The author ends his book by saying ‘know when to break the rules’ as to say that someone should always employ their judgment at all times。 Over the course of his book, the author often repeated himself unnecessarily (e。g。 RULE 21 – Be cool and RULE 84 – Never lose your temper)。 I am not sure whether this is partly due to the curse of career writers who sometimes simply look for content to fill the pages of their books, but still, good rules of conduct always in a way overlap。 To me, the book should be read on the side, but not consumed as a main course。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 There are a lot of great points to be had here。 Reading this I was realizing why I would get stuck with the worst tasks at work, wouldn’t get the raise/promotion, and a few other things。That said, a lot of the tips are pretty obvious。 These include not gossiping, swearing or participating in office drama。 I’m not going to fault that as I’m sure there are plenty of readers that actually do need to hear that advice。 What I will deduct points for is having tips that might cause damage to people。 Th There are a lot of great points to be had here。 Reading this I was realizing why I would get stuck with the worst tasks at work, wouldn’t get the raise/promotion, and a few other things。That said, a lot of the tips are pretty obvious。 These include not gossiping, swearing or participating in office drama。 I’m not going to fault that as I’m sure there are plenty of readers that actually do need to hear that advice。 What I will deduct points for is having tips that might cause damage to people。 These can be found in the look good section of the book。 No you do not need to spend significant portions of your salary on expensive clothes for the sake that they are expensive。 You can find good reasonably priced clothes and wear those to work。 This section comes across as being extremely vain。 There are also a few contradictions in the book。 For example, working long dedicated hours week after week (emphasized at the beginning of the book) while also not (stated at the end)。 Putting a rule that says “know which rules to break” doesn’t give a free pass。 There is a lot of good info here but please be critical。 。。。more

Good outline but lacks depth Good concepts and worth skimming but it lacks the depth to be practically applied。 Perhaps worth flipping through every couple years to trigger ideas on tactics you can apply to current work contexts。
