Summary

“They found the bodies on a Tuesday。”

So begins this twisty and breathtaking novel that traces the fate of the Pine family, a thriller that will both leave you on the edge of your seat and move you to tears。

After a late night of partying, NYU student Matt Pine returns to his dorm room to devastating news: nearly his entire family—his mom, his dad, his little brother and sister—have been found dead from an apparent gas leak while vacationing in Mexico。 The local police claim it was an accident, but the FBI and State Department seem far less certain—and they won’t tell Matt why。

The tragedy makes headlines everywhere because this isn’t the first time the Pine family has been thrust into the media spotlight。 Matt’s older brother, Danny—currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his teenage girlfriend Charlotte—was the subject of a viral true crime documentary suggesting that Danny was wrongfully convicted。 Though the country has rallied behind Danny, Matt holds a secret about his brother that he’s never told anyone: the night Charlotte was killed Matt saw something that makes him believe his brother is guilty of the crime。

When Matt returns to his small hometown to bury his parents and siblings, he’s faced with a hostile community that was villainized by the documentary, a frenzied media, and memories he’d hoped to leave behind forever。 Now, as the deaths in Mexico appear increasingly suspicious and connected to Danny’s case, Matt must unearth the truth behind the crime that sent his brother to prison—putting his own life in peril—and forcing him to confront his every last fear。

Told through multiple points-of-view and alternating between past and present, Alex Finlay's Every Last Fear is not only a page-turning thriller, it’s also a poignant story about a family managing heartbreak and tragedy, and living through a fame they never wanted。

2 starsI cannot believe this book is getting glowing reviews and so much publicity。 Did those people who gave it 4/5 stars and promote this book not learn anything about racism and stereotyping and harmful representation of the LGBTG+ people?I thought people were gonna do better? What happened to those people after reading anti-racism books and watching shows on how not to be a racist? What happened to those people after reading anti-racism books and watching shows on how not to be a racist? Did they just skim read this book? From this book and its good reviews, you'd see how much we still need to change in our ways and views about POC and LGBTQ+ people。Let me list some of the harmful, stereotypical, offensive, and/or racist sentences in this book。 Mind you, there are characters here that are from different countries and races。 But there were there just so you could say it was diverse。 But no。 Alex Finaly's views of the world and people who are not white and straight are so stereotypical。1。 Fitting—Ganesh’s own brain could provide years of study。 He was a conservative who chose to attend liberal NYU。 He was an immigrant who loved to chant “Build the wall。” He was sophisticated, yet highly susceptible to cable news conspiracy theories。2。 In his peripheral vision, he saw a figure。 The silhouette of a tall guy in a ball cap。 Probably a married guy trolling for an anonymous same-sex liaison, another charming feature of twilight in the park。3。 Woo-jin was from South Korea and on a basketball scholarship。 He was a quiet kid, embarrassed by his heavy accent。 When Woo-jin was struggling with classes, Matt had tutored him。Besides these, the plot twists were predictable, at least for me。 All this book just made me mad, really。I guess reading "White Fragility" and other related books can't really help in eradicating racism。 And it's just so sad and tiring。Won't support this author and won't read more of his books。 Can't believe even his editors didn't catch any of those sentences/paragraphs。 。。。more

Just when you thought you had an idea。。。now you are thrown a new lead! This book was great。 I felt all the characters being told from multiple view points, I was able to visualize everything that was happening thanks to the excellent writing。 This was a book that kept me up to almost 3am to finish because I had to know the truth!

Personally, the "big reveal" wasn't all that surprising, but there were plenty of other twists along the way。 There were so many different things going on and I loved how everything tied together。 I will read more from this author。 Personally, the "big reveal" wasn't all that surprising, but there were plenty of other twists along the way。 There were so many different things going on and I loved how everything tied together。 I will read more from this author。 。。。more

2 stars seemed harsh but I feel harsh because I’m so disappointed :( I’ve been waiting for this one and it seemed right up my alley! A strong start that quickly lost me。 The writing was a bit cheesy (introducing the friend group as “So-and-so was next”。。。 reminded me a bit of characters looking in the mirror and describing themselves for the reader 🤷‍♀️)。 I really only cares about Agent Keller。 The mystery wasn’t consistently compelling and the fact that it was basically a conspiracy theory sim 2 stars seemed harsh but I feel harsh because I’m so disappointed :( I’ve been waiting for this one and it seemed right up my alley! This is an ideal beach book, preferably in a beach in Mexico while sipping margaritas, or in any beach anywhere sipping anything at this point。 Damn you Covid!

3。5 stars。 I enjoyed this debut mystery, the plot felt different in a genre where sometimes I feel like I'm reading the same story with only a few changes。 But the main reason I will be reading the next book by this author is because he/she manages to inject the story with emotion。 The characters are all likeable and not perfect, but I think the big reason we start feeling for them is because of the chapters featuring the family members and everything going on in their lives before their deaths。 3。5 stars。 I enjoyed this debut mystery, the plot felt different in a genre where sometimes I feel like I'm reading the same story with only a few changes。 But the main reason I will be reading the next book by this author is because he/she manages to inject the story with emotion。 The characters are all likeable and not perfect, but I think the big reason we start feeling for them is because of the chapters featuring the family members and everything going on in their lives before their deaths。 Knowing that this damaged but charming family is already dead when we get to know them, really added a sense of sadness。The only reason I did not score the book higher is that I guessed the reveal, same as most of the reviewers it seems, which is fine, but I would have preferred a less dramatic ending, something that would match the tender feelings the rest of the book evoked。The Story: A family made infamous by a true crime documentary is found dead, leaving a surviving son to uncover the truth about their final days。 。。。more

This was every bit intriguing and suspenseful, it got you stirring on edge waiting for more with each new chapter and each new piece of clue or shocking revelation。 It made my mind go wild with theories about who and why and how, and what was the motive behind everything that was happening。 I loved how it was fast-pacing but not too straight-forward at the same time, to keep one's mind reeling。 Even tho some parts were too cliché or unrealistic, the mystery made up for it all, making you accept This was every bit intriguing and suspenseful, it got you stirring on edge waiting for more with each new chapter and each new piece of clue or shocking revelation。 It made my mind go wild with theories about who and why and how, and what was the motive behind everything that was happening。 I loved how it was fast-pacing but not too straight-forward at the same time, to keep one's mind reeling。 Even tho some parts were too cliché or unrealistic, the mystery made up for it all, making you accept the story for what it is even tho it's bizarreness at some points in the plot, and actually enjoying every second of it。 However, my favorite thing about it has to be the MULTIPLE character pov's, like wow, not so many books I've read have at least two pov's but to have one that has almost everyone's different perspective viewed and their reasons, motives, and goals explained was what made this so very interesting。 Honestly it's one of my favorite reads this year and it brought fresh waves of every emotion right with it's heartbreakingly beautiful ending! 。。。more

Alex Finlay writes in a similar style to Blake Crouch: all big ideas and no beauty。 While this style works for Crouch, Finlay’s big ideas fell short of being realistic or provoking。The entire book was a massive stereotype, sure to offend anyone in the legal system, the justice system, Mexicans, and people from small towns。 The cop persona is related so poorly in this novel, ripped from any criminal TV show you might have ever watched, complete with impractical-to-illegal methods and corny phrase Alex Finlay writes in a similar style to Blake Crouch: all big ideas and no beauty。 While this style works for Crouch, Finlay’s big ideas fell short of being realistic or provoking。The entire book was a massive stereotype, sure to offend anyone in the legal system, the justice system, Mexicans, and people from small towns。 The cop persona is related so poorly in this novel, ripped from any criminal TV show you might have ever watched, complete with impractical-to-illegal methods and corny phrases。 The dialogue is bad throughout。 The story is not served at all by the frequent time jumps within it, nor by the frequent changes in points of view。 Many of the chapters are nothing but filler and obsolete backstory。 I didn’t care about, let alone like, a single character。 In the end, it was a weak story with several loose threads。 。。。more

I am so conflicted reviewing this book given its high ratings so let me explain myself without spoilers to it。 This book is not at all fast-paced。 If anything, it starts off interesting, then it’s slow until after 300 pages。 Some slow-paced psychological thrillers are great, but none of those waited until the end of the book to get the pacing right。 Additionally, this book brought in too many characters as narrators with little to no depth。 Matt? No depth。 His entire family? No depth。 The fact t I am so conflicted reviewing this book given its high ratings so let me explain myself without spoilers to it。 This book is not at all fast-paced。 If anything, it starts off interesting, then it’s slow until after 300 pages。 Some slow-paced psychological thrillers are great, but none of those waited until the end of the book to get the pacing right。 Additionally, this book brought in too many characters as narrators with little to no depth。 Matt? Highly enjoyable, twisty crime procedural with a dash of true crime。 The alternating perspectives really created a novel experience, and I’m excited to see more from Agent Keller。
