Based in Austin, Texas, Mondo is an art gallery and online store devoted to the love of film, art, music, and collectibles。 Over the years, the company has received global recognition for its incredible art posters that bring to life classic films, television shows, and comics in a refreshing and utterly striking new way, offering a unique perspective on everything from Star Wars to RobocopBack to the FutureJurassic ParkGame of ThronesGodzillaKill Bill, and many, many more。 For the first time, The Art of Mondo brings together this highly sought-after art in one deluxe volume that showcases the incredible ingenuity of the studio’s diverse stable of artists whose vastly different styles are united by one guiding principle: limitless passion for their subject matter。

Adored by the creative talents to whom Mondo’s art pays tribute—including Paul Thomas Anderson, Guillermo del Toro, Zack Snyder, Quentin Tarantino, and Edgar Wright, to name but a few—this richly imaginative work is fueled by a love of pop culture that fans recognize and identify with, giving Mondo’s output a rare and valuable synergy with its audience。 While these posters are normally produced in a limited quantity and sell out in minutes, The Art of Mondo allows fans to explore the studio’s remarkable back catalog, including Olly Moss’s iconic Star Wars trilogy work, Laurent Durieux’s brilliantly subtle Jaws poster, and Tyler Stout’s evocative Guardians of the Galaxy art。 Other key Mondo artists such as Jock, Martin Ansin, and Aaron Horkey will also feature。 Definitive, visually stunning, and filled with art that celebrates some of the biggest and best-loved properties in pop culture, The Art of Mondo is the ultimate book for cult art fans everywhere。

It’s really amazing how such an important part of recent graphic design (and art) history all happens at a single company。 Taking gig poster design into the film world was a simple but revolutionary concept that’s easy to take for granted now that it’s so ubiquitous and maybe even a little tired。 The art is great, the history is great。 The only complaint is that there are some great posters that were left out (possibly because the artists wanted to show them in their own books) and that the arti It’s really amazing how such an important part of recent graphic design (and art) history all happens at a single company。 Taking gig poster design into the film world was a simple but revolutionary concept that’s easy to take for granted now that it’s so ubiquitous and maybe even a little tired。 The art is great, the history is great。 The only complaint is that there are some great posters that were left out (possibly because the artists wanted to show them in their own books) and that the artists aren’t given as much attention as the creative directors。 There is an index at the end that repeats thumbnails of all art along with credits, but as you’re reading through and taking a piece in, it was a frustrating experience to not know who the artist was unless you could find their signature。 I know it must have been a tricky editorial decision either way, but it still feels like a missed opportunity to call out the individual creators who made such huge contributions。 。。。more

An appropriately gorgeous coffee table book, stuffed with brilliant, re-imagined movie posters and illustrations。 Based in Austin, Texas, Mondo specializes in such work - design for designers with a mutual interest in cult cinema - and this chronological portfolio provides an intriguing look into how their house style has developed over the years。 Little wonder their work is in such high demand: the best pieces inspire wonder and provoke thought, interpreting familiar material in dazzling new wa An appropriately gorgeous coffee table book, stuffed with brilliant, re-imagined movie posters and illustrations。 Based in Austin, Texas, Mondo specializes in such work - design for designers with a mutual interest in cult cinema - and this chronological portfolio provides an intriguing look into how their house style has developed over the years。 Little wonder their work is in such high demand: the best pieces inspire wonder and provoke thought, interpreting familiar material in dazzling new ways。 Seeing a great Mondo poster is like finding an old photo of your childhood bedroom and spotting the doorway to an unfamiliar closet in the corner。 What did we keep in there? It's familiarity from a fresh perspective。 I just wish there were more substance to the written chapter breaks, and a little less repetition in the material。 Even with a new artist behind every easel, I'd rather not see so many renditions of The Iron Giant or Nightmare Before Christmas。 Apply that talent to something new。 。。。more

First, the art in this book is generally very incredible, the product of countless amazing posters by different artists curated by Mondo。 They have nearly-single-handedly built the bridge from niche gig posters to the mainstream, and the hard work shows。This huge book (both in thickness and size) is a great showcase for so many wonderful posters, and that's what you're buying it for。 So, it's super successful on that front。 However, I was underwhelmed by the total lack of interesting anecdotes o First, the art in this book is generally very incredible, the product of countless amazing posters by different artists curated by Mondo。 They have nearly-single-handedly built the bridge from niche gig posters to the mainstream, and the hard work shows。This huge book (both in thickness and size) is a great showcase for so many wonderful posters, and that's what you're buying it for。 So, it's super successful on that front。 However, I was underwhelmed by the total lack of interesting anecdotes or behind-the-scenes writing in the book。 I would have loved some real details about the history of Mondo and how it grew; instead, the overly general essays read as generic, insider-ish, and nostalgic, and don't add much to the overall package。 So, I give it 4 stars instead of 5。Still, the meat and potatoes are the poster reproductions, and this nice book has those in spades。 Recommended for movie fans, poster collectors, and anyone who likes great art。 。。。more

Easily my favorite art book of the last decade。 Highly recommended for people who want something a bit unusual on their shelf。 Also for cinephiles。

Wouldn't classify as a must-read or even a read per se。 It's just a collection of dope Mondo posters from back in the day with some commentary from the peeps who made them。If you're a film fan and like connecting with the passion of fellow cinephiles, then get on that Mondo magic。 If not, probably not the best purchase for you。Personally, I love it。 Wouldn't classify as a must-read or even a read per se。 It's just a collection of dope Mondo posters from back in the day with some commentary from the peeps who made them。If you're a film fan and like connecting with the passion of fellow cinephiles, then get on that Mondo magic。 If not, probably not the best purchase for you。Personally, I love it。 。。。more

An engaging and vivid look at Mondo, the early years。 The poster index that concludes the collection is a considerate afterthought。 We don’t muddy the beauty of the images with unnecessary text。 I do wish that the stories went further as the history of Mondo was quite engaging。 Overall, if you even have a vague interest in Mondo prints, this is worth the price of admission。

Well-made, but I frankly wouldn't have minded a few less piece from each year and the inclusion of the 2015-2016 output。 Well-made, but I frankly wouldn't have minded a few less piece from each year and the inclusion of the 2015-2016 output。 。。。more
