Summary

An elegant new action manga for fans of Sailor Moon and the litany of comics and animation that it inspired, Land of the Lustrous is set in a far future Earth, where humanity's distant descendants live on in a small group of sexless crystalline beings who must fight off an invasion from the Moon。
The young gem Phosphorite can't seem to do anything right。 "Phos" has nothing but a big mouth and guts。 Cinnabar, a classmate, is a loner, shunned by the other gems because of the toxins emitted from their body。 But when they get together, they will learn that they both have an essential role to play in the fight against the Moonfolk, who are intent on coming to Earth to abduct the gem folk and destroy their world。 A beautifully-drawn new action manga from Haruko Ichikawa, winner of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize。

The art is much better than the storyline, but there are also a few good diamond/gemstones puns。

It was a fun read。 I like how in some pages it just has the art panels with out the words。 I’ve watched the anime but didn’t get the chance to finish it。 I hope it would get a second season。

It doesn't work well at all。 Most of the characters end up looking alike, which is bad for connecting with them or knowing who is doing what。 And the action scenes—so fluid and awesome in the anime—lack any kind of flow on page。I'll probably read v。2 and v。3 (ie, what I bought), but if they feel on par with v。1, I may not bother reading further。 。。。more

this manga is ongoing, so rating is set to change。 additionally when i include manga, i'll be talking about the work as a whole, not just the volume i set it on。i'm not sure how to say this but i almost think i'm not smart enough to talk about houseki no kuni。 or at least, well-read enough on buddhism and the philosophies it addresses。 this manga is pain personified。 when the anime came out i was compltely entranced by it! beautiful art, fun characters, and a hidden depth to it all you wouldn't this manga is ongoing, so rating is set to change。 additionally when i include manga, i'll be talking about the work as a whole, not just the volume i set it on。i'm not sure how to say this but i almost think i'm not smart enough to talk about houseki no kuni。 or at least, well-read enough on buddhism and the philosophies it addresses。 this manga is pain personified。 when the anime came out i was compltely entranced by it! beautiful art, fun characters, and a hidden depth to it all you wouldn't have expected, going into it。 looking back, it hardly seems like the same work at all。 hnk does not have "hidden depth"。 it is all depth, with no chance to breathe。 in fact if you do try a breath, it simply pushes you down further to drown。 it does not rely on shock value, or gore, or over the top sadness and tragedy to achieve this。 houseki presents to you a seemingly stagnant society, where no one ages, or dies, and everyone appears equal to each other。 what should happen, then? what does it mean to be alive? to be human? what is humanity? what is peace? what is free will when instinct exists? what defines an individual?every twist the manga takes, every new element it introduces blends seamlessly into the work, and the descent into what it is today is so slow and purposeful, and inevitable。 i'm never shocked。 looking back every time, its obvious with every development how what happened was happening all along。 i'm not angry, or in tears。 it's despair。 the philosophy and the questions it asks are horrifying and not at all poignant to modern day life, but that's what makes it fascinating。 hnk forces you to think about a picture bigger than anything you may have considered before。i think i would have trouble watching the anime again now, to be honest。 i love all the gems。 i sympathize with them。 but most of all, i hate them。 they aren't full beings, neither are the lunarians, and it's why i feel i must be forgiving to their actions on some level。 but i hate everyone, except phos, except *including* phos- i told you at the beginning i was going to have trouble articulating my thoughts! i may hate the gems, but it's not their fault。 i may hate who phos has become, but i must feel for them, or no one else will。moving onto the art。 its stunning, what else can i say? sometimes it can be less complex than other manga, but that just makes the more artistic panels all the more striking。i think it does have some issues with pacing。 the slow descent is a part of it that works well wrt easing the reader through this world and making it believable but it can also just be a bit too。。。。 repetitive and slow-moving at times。 for example as much as i despise the relationship between aechmea and caingorm, i can on some level understand its place in the work。 i would personally prefer it without, but i can also see the reasoning for including it。 that does *not* mean it needs to be featured as much as it is。 sure, it drives home that uncomfortable feeling but at some point it just becomes a dull annoyance/disgust rather than something purposeful and distressing, that's properly making the point it strives to。the end is very clearly near for houseki no kuni。 it seems obvious to me the way the plot is going to, and i am both dreading and eagerly anticipating it。 i hope for a cathartic ending, if i dare to hope for anything with these characters。 at the end of my current read i just feel despairful and exhausted。 i know what i've read is brilliant and heartwrenching, but i need 。。。。 /something/ different to end this off on。 i can only have faith the authour will deliver。 。。。more

Not going to lie, this was hard to read in manga form because the colours of each gem is what sets each character a part - so a lot of attention is required, but overall I still loved it and enjoyed it as much as I watched the anime adaptation for the very first time!

It's very beautifully drawn but I can't say that I am completely convinced about the story just yet。 The ending made me curious enough to buy the next volume though。 What's more important is the non-binary rep this manga has。 There isn't many manga out there with such rep and we really need more of it。 So, this alone adds a star to my rating。 It's very beautifully drawn but I can't say that I am completely convinced about the story just yet。 The ending made me curious enough to buy the next volume though。 What's more important is the non-binary rep this manga has。 There isn't many manga out there with such rep and we really need more of it。 So, this alone adds a star to my rating。 。。。more

I honestly enjoyed reading Land of the Lustrous。 The artwork was well illustrated and refreshing to view, the manga's characters were also rather interesting too。 I've seen a lot of reviews that stated that they couldn't understand what was happening in the manga, and I can agree with that。 I had to re-read a few times to understand what was going on with the characters and the storyline, but after I understood what was happening, I found that I truly enjoyed reading Land of The Lustrous。 Over I honestly enjoyed reading Land of the Lustrous。 The artwork was well illustrated and refreshing to view, the manga's characters were also rather interesting too。 I've seen a lot of reviews that stated that they couldn't understand what was happening in the manga, and I can agree with that。 I had to re-read a few times to understand what was going on with the characters and the storyline, but after I understood what was happening, I found that I truly enjoyed reading Land of The Lustrous。 Overall, it was a good read, but if you aren't a fan of dwelling on a books pages trying to figure out what's going on in the story, I wouldn't recommend reading this book。 。。。more
