Summary

A monument to sloth, rant and contempt, a behemoth of fat, flatulence and furious suspicion of anything modern — this is Ignatius J。 Reilly of New Orleans, noble crusader against a world of dunces。 The ordinary folk of New Orleans seem to think he is unhinged。 Ignatius ignores them, heaving his vast bulk through the city's fleshpots in a noble crusade against vice, modernity and ignorance。 But his momma has a nasty surprise in store for him: Ignatius must get a job。 Undaunted, he uses his new-found employment to further his mission — and now he has a pirate costume and a hot-dog cart to do it with。。。

This is a book that shouldn't be good but is。 The main character has very few good points and many bad but in the end I found myself wishing everything would go his way。It is a well written book where various storylines slowly develop and twist into a single narrative story that is gripping。A definite recommendation from me。 This is a book that shouldn't be good but is。 The main character has very few good points and many bad but in the end I found myself wishing everything would go his way。It is a well written book where various storylines slowly develop and twist into a single narrative story that is gripping。A definite recommendation from me。 。。。more

A masterpiece。 Hilarious, obviously, but Ignatius is one of the most vivid characters to ever grace the page。 One of my favorites。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm guessing that anyone who reads this book isn't likely to forget it。 I've rarely read a novel with a character as memorable as Ignatius Reilly。 There were times when I just couldn't stand it, I thought the scenes went on too long (esp with his mother and her friends), but there in the late chapter where it all comes together at the Night of Joy, I really did marvel at Toole's creation。 Love it or not, it really is something, and definitely one that any serious reader should read at least once I'm guessing that anyone who reads this book isn't likely to forget it。 I've rarely read a novel with a character as memorable as Ignatius Reilly。 There were times when I just couldn't stand it, I thought the scenes went on too long (esp with his mother and her friends), but there in the late chapter where it all comes together at the Night of Joy, I really did marvel at Toole's creation。 Love it or not, it really is something, and definitely one that any serious reader should read at least once。 。。。more

Just re-read this after 30+ years。 Haven’t changed my original opinion: It’s a masterpiece, one of the funniest novels of the 20th century。

Scott Carusillo

Very funny, laughed out loud multiple times。 I would rate it a 4。5 if I could。

Candice

I can’t tolerate books where the main character is as detestable as this one is。 I could barely get through it。 I honestly don’t understand the Pulitzer Prize selection process。

Adrienne Taylor

Entertaining, incredible dialogue through exhausting characters, having mostly circular arguments。 Maybe that’s the point? A lot of humor and wit。 Appreciate the creativity but could have done without the slurs。

Fantastic! A testament to taste and decency。 The most enjoyable reading experience I can remember。

I enjoyed reading this book by the late John Kennedy。 The book was wrote during the 50s and finished around the early 60s。 Ignatius and many of the other characters capture a lower emotional intelligence and dysfunctional personality types that aren't quite able to take responsibility for their actions。 I appreciate the supporting characters inability to rein in the main character and how entertainingly each blunder built on the last。 Burma Jones was a particular favorite as he seamlessly rotate I enjoyed reading this book by the late John Kennedy。 The book was wrote during the 50s and finished around the early 60s。 Ignatius and many of the other characters capture a lower emotional intelligence and dysfunctional personality types that aren't quite able to take responsibility for their actions。 I appreciate the supporting characters inability to rein in the main character and how entertainingly each blunder built on the last。 Burma Jones was a particular favorite as he seamlessly rotated between being a mastermind of sabotage and 'mark' with ease。 I'd recommend this book if you can handle the extremely un-PC language of the 50s-60s era and if you're able [in 2021] to stomach yet another caricature of blind narcissism with no concept of reality。 。。。more

Read this years ago, completely forgot about it:))

Extremely funny。 Ignatius J Reilly is a fascinating reactionary figure and serves as one of the greatest examples of the Dunning-Krueger effect。

I bought this book as I read that it was one of those books “you have to read”。 I didnt like it。 I found it was depressing and annoying。 Its the first book that I have ever read that I skimmed paragraphs and then pages just so I could get to the end。 A total pile of shite if you want my opinion。

Carlos Cardhen

3 Stars。 It was pretty good。 It certainly wasn’t as funny as I was hoping it would be。 And the chapters were far too long with not enough stopping points。 Maybe I would’ve enjoyed it more if I wasn’t so busy with everything going on in my life right now。

Autumn Bennett

Charming in places。 Crazy in others。 Long。 Ending was disappointing。

This book kept on coming up in selections of must-reads so I committed。 From the brilliant title and page one a rip-snorter of a story that had me shaking my head in wonder and amusement at this incredibly arrogant, conceited, lovable oaf。 I am sure we all have known a milder version of Ignatius someone who hears the music of a different drum and beats the bejesus out of it! While I didn't find this to be the funniest book ever, I certainly understand why it won the Pulitzer Prize。 The writing is incredible, and the characters are unbelievably vivid and bizarre。 John Kennedy Toole was a master of dialogue。 Once I really got into it, I couldn't put it down。 While I didn't find this to be the funniest book ever, I certainly understand why it won the Pulitzer Prize。 The writing is incredible, and the characters are unbelievably vivid and bizarre。 John Kennedy Toole was a master of dialogue。 Once I really got into it, I couldn't put it down。 。。。more

。。。more

I'd heard great things about this book, and the title is obviously pithy enough to have wormed its way into popular culture。 Unfortunately, I was pretty let down。 Ignatius is a fantastic comic creation, and definitely the heart of the novel。 The tragedy of the book is there's nothing really for him to do。 The plot meanders gently through a series of related events, but it never really comes to the boil: Rather than slowly ramping up the absurdity curve, things reach a mildly funny point and then I'd heard great things about this book, and the title is obviously pithy enough to have wormed its way into popular culture。 Unfortunately, I was pretty let down。 Ignatius is a fantastic comic creation, and definitely the heart of the novel。 The tragedy of the book is there's nothing really for him to do。 The plot meanders gently through a series of related events, but it never really comes to the boil: Rather than slowly ramping up the absurdity curve, things reach a mildly funny point and then dissipate, repeatedly。 It took me actual weeks to get through this because I wasn't enjoying it very much。 The saving grace is the ending, where for the first time you actually find yourself rooting for Ignatius rather than watching him blunder about。 I probably won't come back to it。 。。。more

It took me quite some time to get into this book。 It’s definitely not one I would have picked up on my own (it was for a book club), but I did get some amusement out of all the different, interesting characters and how their lives all crossed together。 Definitely a picture of how cynical and low humanity can go。

Brian Lancaster

I feel like we all know an Ignatius, and act like Ignatius at times。 This book left me feeling nihilistic, however Toole’s tone throughout the book is hard to miss。 And I think there are a few themes revealed at the end of the book that are profound。

Colin Murphy

Drunkenly aggressive and insensibly exhilarating, Toole drives the reader to burst their bladder。

Maxi Cosy

Exhausting yet extremely funny
