Summary

"The Catcher in the Rye" is J 。 D。 Salinger's world-famous novel of disaffected youth。 Holden Caulfield is a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school。 Navigating his way through the challenges of growing up, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves: the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection。 Written with the clarity of a boy leaving childhood behind, "The Catcher in the Rye" explores the world with disarming frankness and a warm, affecting charisma which has made this novel a universally loved classic of twentieth-century literature。 J。 D。 Salinger was born in 1919 and died in January 2010。 He grew up in New York City, and wrote short stories from an early age, but his breakthrough came in 1948 with the publication in The New Yorker of "A Perfect Day for Bananafish"。 "The Catcher in the Rye" was his first and only novel, published in 1951。 It remains one of the most translated, taught and reprinted texts, and has sold some 65 million copies。 His other works include the novellas "Franny and Zooey", "For Esme with Love and Squalor", and "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters, published with Seymour - An Introduction"。

It's all I ever wanted in a book: no plot, just following the character around and hearing his train of thoughts, his actions, reactions and interactions with other people。 Maybe if i read this 8-10 years ago i would've loved it。 But now, probably because I'm over my teenage angst and Holden & I are at different places in our life, it's just an ok book for me。I love all the moments between Holden and his sister though。 It's all I ever wanted in a book: no plot, just following the character around and hearing his train of thoughts, his actions, reactions and interactions with other people。 Maybe if i read this 8-10 years ago i would've loved it。 But now, probably because I'm over my teenage angst and Holden & I are at different places in our life, it's just an ok book for me。I love all the moments between Holden and his sister though。 。。。more

OK, I cant say I loved this book, but then, I'm reading it for the first time at age 66。 What I can say is that I wish someone had given this to me to read 50 years ago, just so that I would know that I wasnt completely alone in the world。 OK, I cant say I loved this book, but then, I'm reading it for the first time at age 66。 What I can say is that I wish someone had given this to me to read 50 years ago, just so that I would know that I wasnt completely alone in the world。 。。。more

It's no easy feat growing up。With age comes the loss of innocence, and the need to craft a path for your own life - and sometimes, the emotional burden of the former and the pressure that comes in trying to figure out the latter leaves you lost and directionless。This is the story - of Holden Caulfield。Holden is a young boy of seventeen - and at the start of the novel, recounts how he faced the grim prospect of being kicked out of high school for the third time in his life。 He talks about his dec It's no easy feat growing up。With age comes the loss of innocence, and the need to craft a path for your own life - and sometimes, the emotional burden of the former and the pressure that comes in trying to figure out the latter leaves you lost and directionless。This is the story - of Holden Caulfield。Holden is a young boy of seventeen - and at the start of the novel, recounts how he faced the grim prospect of being kicked out of high school for the third time in his life。 He talks about his deceased younger brother, Allie, at several points during his recollection of the events that lead up to him being admitted to the hospital with Tuberculosis - and you can tell the loss of his sibling weighed heavy on his heart。Holden hates the phonies of this world。 This hate is most prominent when he talks about how he detests movies and plays, because it's simply a bunch of people pretending to be something they're not。 He even goes so far as to call his elder brother a prostitute for selling out to Hollywood。 And yet - whenever he has time to kill, he doesn't mind catching a show or two。 It would be harsh to term Holden as a hypocrite - even though for the most part, that's what it seems he comes off as。 He derides people, whom he later comes to miss。 He detests movies, which he frankly admits he sometimes simply can't stop watching。 He considers himself a moderate smoker, even though he clearly has a terrible smoking habit。 He calls himself a sex maniac - yet, he's a virgin。Holden is simply a lost soul who doesn't have any answers - but he doesn't seek them。 Rather, his impulsive nature rapidly takes him from one awful scenario to another, and he deludes himself with contrived imaginary scenarios that never come to pass。Holden has set himself on a downward trajectory - and he's fully aware of it - yet doesn't outwardly open it - in many ways, making him the biggest phony of the lot。 He becomes what he hates。The author also implies that Holden's good looks have attracted unwanted attention and ugly events many a time in his life - and this, in my opinion, has furthered left him confused about not just his opinion of sex, but possibly of his own sexuality。I'd also like to highlight the touching relationship Holden shares with his little sister, Phoebe。 In many ways, Salinger depicts Phoebe as the only person in the novel who is capable of making Holden think straight - with Phoebe, Holden finds himself wanting to be better than who he is, a savior to anyone who is at danger of falling off a cliff, a "catcher in the rye"。 Phoebe is aware of her brother's wild ways - and yet, still loves him a lot。 She knows the entire world would judge him for who he is, yet doesn't judge him herself。In many ways, Holden clings onto "Old Phoebe" in a manner that would lead you to believe that he's trying to cling onto his own innocence through her - and his unrelenting desire to not grow up and face the harsh realities of this world。Innocence doesn't last forever。 Society is not kind to the directionless。 Phonies lurk at every nook and corner - out to swindle you and punch you in the gut, much like Maurice did to Holden。Let things play out。 When a child falls, you can sometimes only watch and hope they learn from the mistake and get back up。 Growing up is hard - and sometimes, it's much harder for an unlucky few。 This book isn't meant to showcase Holden's transformative journey from being a wandering soul to a man who's come of age。 It's meant to showcase what the loss of innocence looks like, and the baggage that comes with it。 Everyone is always jumping at the opportunity to lend advice to the directionless。 But just cornering a child who has no direction and asking them to sort things out does not work。 Telling someone who's depressed to just stop being depressed does not work。So, be patient with the Holden Caulfields' - understand their story。 What they've been through。 Why they behave in a certain。 And most importantly, why sometimes you can't have answers to all of life's questions pop out of thin air。 。。。more

I enjoyed it in the beginning。 The way he talks is kind of funny。 Holden hates/dislikes almost everybody or at least some part of anyone around him, but still he has some good sides too。 Like I liked how he is attached to his family so much especially his siblings。 His thoughts are crazy, really crazy at times, like he is not made for the real world。 It got really exhausting after halfway, I mean being in someone's headspace for so long is so exhausting and boring tbh。 I enjoyed it in the beginning。 The way he talks is kind of funny。 Holden hates/dislikes almost everybody or at least some part of anyone around him, but still he has some good sides too。 Like I liked how he is attached to his family so much especially his siblings。 His thoughts are crazy, really crazy at times, like he is not made for the real world。 It got really exhausting after halfway, I mean being in someone's headspace for so long is so exhausting and boring tbh。 。。。more

Holden Caulfield is a lonely teenager who got expelled from Pencey prep school。 Holden spends that time in New York City so that he could avoid meeting his parents before Christmas。 All he is looking for is someone who would listen to him。 He sees everyone as phonies。 He doesn't find hope in anyone, from Mr。 Spencer, who never seems to say the right thing, Mr。 Antolini, who allegedly makes an advance on him and his friends who just don't want to listen to him。 He never finds anything he loves or Holden Caulfield is a lonely teenager who got expelled from Pencey prep school。 Holden spends that time in New York City so that he could avoid meeting his parents before Christmas。 All he is looking for is someone who would listen to him。 He sees everyone as phonies。 He doesn't find hope in anyone, from Mr。 Spencer, who never seems to say the right thing, Mr。 Antolini, who allegedly makes an advance on him and his friends who just don't want to listen to him。 He never finds anything he loves or finds any reason to believe in humanity。This book delves into those phases of disappointment that we all relate at times。 Those moments when we look around the world and think everything is absurd。 At those times, we all end up questioning "does anything really matter?" or "Is it really worth it?" In the end, Holden breaks through his angst。 He somehow finds inspiration in the innocence of his sister, Phoebe, enjoying a carousel ride during a rainstorm。 I would've loved it if this moment got more attention than the sad tone throughout the book。 In the end, Holden doesn't give up on the world, and that is Salinger's driving point of the entire story。 。。。more

Holden really personifies teenage angst, and I think this book is so popular because we all sympathize and feel like he does。 We all wish we could be bad without feeling guilty, because we don't see others' guilt。 We all waffle between soaring confidence and groveling self-loathing。 We see others who seem so well put together and envy them, and we look down on others who seem beneath us。 I liked and despised this book for capturing many of the traits I hate about myself and portraying them in a Holden really personifies teenage angst, and I think this book is so popular because we all sympathize and feel like he does。 We all wish we could be bad without feeling guilty, because we don't see others' guilt。 We all waffle between soaring confidence and groveling self-loathing。 We see others who seem so well put together and envy them, and we look down on others who seem beneath us。 I liked and despised this book for capturing many of the traits I hate about myself and portraying them in a pathetic, not really likable character。 。。。more
