Summary

A personal and powerful essay from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the bestselling author of ‘Americanah’ and ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’, based on her 2013 TEDx Talk of the same name。

What does “feminism” mean today? That is the question at the heart of We Should All Be Feminists, a personal, eloquently-argued essay – adapted from her much-viewed Tedx talk of the same name – by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the award-winning author of ‘Americanah’ and ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’。 With humour and levity, here Adichie offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century – one rooted in inclusion and awareness。 She shines a light not only on blatant discrimination, but also the more insidious, institutional behaviours that marginalise women around the world, in order to help readers of all walks of life better understand the often masked realities of sexual politics。 Throughout, she draws extensively on her own experiences – in the U。S。, in her native Nigeria – offering an artfully nuanced explanation of why the gender divide is harmful for women and men, alike。 Argued in the same observant, witty and clever prose that has made Adichie a best-selling novelist, here is one remarkable author’s exploration of what it means to be a woman today – and an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists。

I really enjoyed this essay- I listened to it (read by the author) and it was only 45 minutes so I assume the written version is pretty short。 It’s is excellent and I found myself nodding for most of the book。 My one critique would be feminism is looked at through a total binary lense。 I almost gave it five stars but I couldn’t for that reason。

Wow what a great listen! I loved hearing the author read her words。 Her acknowledging how feminism is viewed in her culture and almost has certain derogatory terms to demean women was interesting to hear。 The pushback many women have received from men in regards to behaviour seems to be a universal experience amongst all women。 I also agreed with the way that people respond when you self-identify as a feminist。 Language is so powerful and I don't believe that it is often recognized until someone Wow what a great listen! This was a great reflection if the female experience and sincerely describes why we should all be feminist。 。。。more

“All of us, women and men, must do better。”This is the second book that I have read from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first book。In this book, the writer talks about equality and the differences in society as a man or as a woman and how not everybody can see those differences。I also liked how it was quite short and therefore easy to finish。If you enjoyed this book, i would recommend reading Dear Ijeawele from the same author, because it mentions the same s “All of us, women and men, must do better。”This is the second book that I have read from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first book。In this book, the writer talks about equality and the differences in society as a man or as a woman and how not everybody can see those differences。I also liked how it was quite short and therefore easy to finish。If you enjoyed this book, i would recommend reading Dear Ijeawele from the same author, because it mentions the same subjects as this book。 。。。more

Finished this book in one go and absolutely loved it。 This book motivated me to support fellow women and infuriated me that we normalized gender bias so much that now its a blurry line to all of us。

5 stars because it’s all the words women and men have wanted to say but could not due to gender expectations。 If anyone has a misguided view of what feminism, recommend this really short piece。 A non-reader can even get through。 I was 18 when I heard this Ted talk, I’m 21 now and I’m still as stunned to experience how Chimamanda summarized the experiences of men and women all over the world into 64 pages。

This book may seem pretty obvious to some ppl and that is good cz that means those ppl think of and understand the issues described here。 But unfortunately i am pretty sure a lot of ppl will argue with the author, disagree with her or see no problem at all。 I hope that one day we will all be feminists。

This book (essay?) felt pretty basic, to be honest。 It says ‘feminism’ shouldn’t be a bad word, I should be able to be a feminist and wear makeup, people assume men have more money than women and act accordingly, and women should be treated equally。 One anecdote goes ‘I walked into a restaurant and my male friend was greeted while I was not’。 Like, yeah!! Of course all of those points make sense, but they’re both surface-level and I’ve heard them all many times before。 I guess I was looking for This book (essay?) felt pretty basic, to be honest。 It says ‘feminism’ shouldn’t be a bad word, I should be able to be a feminist and wear makeup, people assume men have more money than women and act accordingly, and women should be treated equally。 One anecdote goes ‘I walked into a restaurant and my male friend was greeted while I was not’。 Like, yeah!! Agreed with other comments that this should be required reading for everyone。

A quick read with a lot attached to it。 The author brings up so much that not only happens in Nigeria but everywhere。 How we all need to stand up for equals for everyone。

I think if I had read this in high school I would have given it a 5/5, but at the place I am currently at in my ideas of feminism, it is too mild for me。 Regardless, my respect for Adichie is always great

Leest zeer vlot, maar eerder geschikt voor mensen die voor het eerst over feminisme lezen。 Ikzelf heb niets ‘bijgeleerd’ door het lezen van dit boek。

A great read! A quick and easy read that addresses some of the pushback that one can get from calling him or herself a “feminist。” I enjoyed this one。

If people would have read this 60 years ago, my life would have been much easier。 The corporate world of men resulted in a lot of guilt and self judgment for me。 This is a short but concise evaluation of where we have gone wrong and what needs to change。

I'm not going to rate this "book" because it's not really a book, but a ted talk, so it's obvious that Chimamanda only talks superficially about a few topics and I would love to know more about her points of view and opinions。 It's not the same rating a ted talk than a book and the proper place to rate it, in my opinion, is not Goodreads。But the only thing clear for me is that I don't want to read or to listen to white privileged women, who have everything, talking about feminism and the "diffic I'm not going to rate this "book" because it's not really a book, but a ted talk, so it's obvious that Chimamanda only talks superficially about a few topics and I would love to know more about her points of view and opinions。 It's not the same rating a ted talk than a book and the proper place to rate it, in my opinion, is not Goodreads。But the only thing clear for me is that I don't want to read or to listen to white privileged women, who have everything, talking about feminism and the "difficulties" of their lives。 The real fight is in the less privileged women and modern "feminism" is fighting for stupidities like language or the "queer" (bullshit) non scientific theory, instead of fighting for the rights of the less privileged women。 。。。more

I really love this essay! I’ve already watched the Ted talk before reading this, but it was so worth getting back into it。 I think it very mutch captures the female experience and the basic issues feminism deals with。 It is really well written and good to follow。 I also like that Ngozi Adichie gives a lot of her own experiences in nigerian culture。 I think it is interesting to be aware of the differences between social structures and comparing them with my own experience。

Jessie

Loved it。 I liked all the short stories from her personal life。 Definitely provided insight and food for thought。

I am seeing red right now。 This book was a quikie for me。 It was a short book, also it is one version of the ted x talk given by the author of this book。 As the name suggests it's a book about why we all should be feminist。 How women even today face problems based on their gender。It made me see red because it was so so relatable for me。 I could feel almost everything the author wrote。 。。Full review will be on my blog and Instagram page soon, followed by a blog on feminism。@ambivert_reader。 I am seeing red right now。 This book was a quikie for me。 It was a short book, also it is one version of the ted x talk given by the author of this book。 As the name suggests it's a book about why we all should be feminist。 How women even today face problems based on their gender。It made me see red because it was so so relatable for me。 I could feel almost everything the author wrote。 。。Full review will be on my blog and Instagram page soon, followed by a blog on feminism。@ambivert_reader。 。。。more
