Summary

A royal scandal's connection to a brutal serial killer threatens London in this new Veronica Speedwell adventure from New York Times bestselling and Edgar(R) Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn。

Autumn 1888。 Veronica Speedwell and her colleague Stoker are asked by Lady Wellingtonia Beauclerk to stop a potential scandal so explosive it threatens to rock the monarchy。 Prince Albert Victor is a regular visitor to the most exclusive private club in London, and the proprietress, Madame Aurore, has received an expensive gift that can be traced back to the prince。 Lady Wellie would like Veronica and Stoker to retrieve it from the club before scandal can break。

Worse yet, London is being terrorized by what would become the most notorious and elusive serial killer in history, Jack the Ripper--and Lady Wellie suspects the prince may be responsible。
Veronica and Stoker reluctantly agree to go undercover at Madame Auroreʼs high-class brothel, where a body soon turns up。 Secrets are swirling around Veronica and the royal family--and it is up to Veronica and Stoker to find the truth, before it is too late for all of them。

The installment I’ve been waiting for。

So far, my least favorite of the Veronica Speedwell series。 The introduction of Jack the Ripper feels too forced in this story and I thought it got a bit overwhelming。 But I’ve also read other reviews that this book was not terribly heavy on content or plot, which seems more the case than the previous books。Regardless, it’s always a fun, witty and historically jovial romp with Ms。 Speedwell and her stalwart companion, Stoker。 There was still a good smattering of the usual suspects in Lady Wellie So far, my least favorite of the Veronica Speedwell series。 The introduction of Jack the Ripper feels too forced in this story and I thought it got a bit overwhelming。 But I’ve also read other reviews that this book was not terribly heavy on content or plot, which seems more the case than the previous books。Regardless, it’s always a fun, witty and historically jovial romp with Ms。 Speedwell and her stalwart companion, Stoker。 There was still a good smattering of the usual suspects in Lady Wellie, Tiberius and the gang。 Just didn’t have the magic that some of the others carried。 。。。more

Well that was certainly titillating。 Veronica and Stoker infiltrate a house of indiscriminate pleasure to potentially save the royal family from public exposure due to one’s secret leanings。 (Debauchery is certainly not exclusive to modern days。) But of course, it is never just so easy。 Abductions, shootings, stabbings, disguises, puppy love, betrayals, revelations, and a whole lot of proper snark。 All the delights expected in Raybourn’s stories。 This particular addition to the series was consid Well that was certainly titillating。 Veronica and Stoker infiltrate a house of indiscriminate pleasure to potentially save the royal family from public exposure due to one’s secret leanings。 (Debauchery is certainly not exclusive to modern days。) But of course, it is never just so easy。 Abductions, shootings, stabbings, disguises, puppy love, betrayals, revelations, and a whole lot of proper snark。 All the delights expected in Raybourn’s stories。 This particular addition to the series was considerably more diabolical with a more in-depth set of menace。 Oh。。 and the culmination? My reviewThis book seemed more like an ending to a series, but I know there’s another book after this one。 I liked it because it wrapped up a lot of things while creating more opportunity for Veronica to know more about her birth relatives。

I love the two main characters in this series。。。I love the English history that is so masterfully discussed。 This novel is set around the time of Jack the Ripper and the in compasses the plight of the poor and London’s destitute during the Victorian period。

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series。 It is a fun, quick read that blends adventure, mystery, and history。 The characters are interesting, but have their quirks that allow them to become more than one dimensional。 It also helps that Deanna Raybourn doesn't take each character seriously。 While Veronica Speedwell is the main character, she is closely joined by "Stoker", and the variety of other characters that help flesh out the stories。I have read this series on audiobook, and enjoy the narrator I have thoroughly enjoyed this series。 It is a fun, quick read that blends adventure, mystery, and history。 The characters are interesting, but have their quirks that allow them to become more than one dimensional。 It also helps that Deanna Raybourn doesn't take each character seriously。 While Veronica Speedwell is the main character, she is closely joined by "Stoker", and the variety of other characters that help flesh out the stories。I have read this series on audiobook, and enjoy the narrator's treatment of the work。 She is able to consistently provide different voices and accents to enhance the portrayal of the characters。 Since narrators can make or break the audiobook experience, I appreciate good narrators。This series is a fun one to read (although I haven't yet read book one, I am still waiting for it to arrive)。 I look forward to the next adventure in this world。 。。。more

Just an excellent read in this series of marvelous stories。 This and the previous title provided such great development in the overarching story of Veronica and Stoker。 Looking forward to the next!

These are so delightful。 Veronica and Stoker get caught up not just in preventing a royal scandal, but the period of time when the Ripper was walking the streets of London and putting everyone on edge。 They meet some delightful characters along the way, get a few surprises, a few wounds, and find out what they really value。

I remember the professor of my senior capstone "Romance as Literature" course saying that audiences will never feel fully satisfied once THAT thing happens; in fact, it is rare that a series finale feels satisfactory because anything that causes the tension to resolve is, well, underwhelming compared to the adrenaline rush related to suspense and sexual tension。 He's right。 The fact that Raybourn had me salivating for sexy scenes and then wincing imagining them going at it while Stoker is physic I remember the professor of my senior capstone "Romance as Literature" course saying that audiences will never feel fully satisfied once THAT thing happens; in fact, it is rare that a series finale feels satisfactory because anything that causes the tension to resolve is, well, underwhelming compared to the adrenaline rush related to suspense and sexual tension。 He's right。 The fact that Raybourn had me salivating for sexy scenes and then wincing imagining them going at it while Stoker is physically infirm most of the novel made me feel a little ashamed as a reader: Raybourn refocuses and reprioritizes romantic love by showing us the intimacy, trust, and vulnerability required of a relationship。 Though the case itself was less captivating than prior adventures (particularly after Veronica Speedwell, #4), I can tell this book was one of immense growth and depth to Veronica's character and her relationship to Stoker。 I'm definitely grateful to still be part of the journey and look forward to reading Veronica Speedwell #6! 。。。more

This wasn't my favorite book in the series maybe because it was a bit more outlandish。 I was thankful that the author chose not to include a detailed set scene because that is not what I read these books for! I mean, the audiobook really sells the series for me- a sassy heroine, humanizing Jack the Rippers victims, and a scandalous club needing infiltration? Couldn’t ask for anything more。 Can’t wait to listen to the latest!!

Quite possibly the best yet in the series and that ending!

I have loved EVERY Veronica Speedwell book in this series。 Stoker and Veronica are the couple you want in your life。 Who doesn't want a STOKER (?!), like yes please。 However this one just didn't "hit" the same way it's predecessors did。There's a lot of talk about Jack the Ripper, and I get historically that ties into Prince Albert and a "scandal"。 However there was little to none of actually including a story around Jack the Ripper, other than "well, there's a scandal。。。 he could be the perpetra I have loved EVERY Veronica Speedwell book in this series。 Stoker and Veronica are the couple you want in your life。 Who doesn't want a STOKER (?!), like yes please。 However this one just didn't "hit" the same way it's predecessors did。There's a lot of talk about Jack the Ripper, and I get historically that ties into Prince Albert and a "scandal"。 However there was little to none of actually including a story around Jack the Ripper, other than "well, there's a scandal。。。 he could be the perpetrator" and "yikes be careful at night as a young woman"。 Which was a little bit of a let down。 Also in the first half, Stoker doesn't have as much pressence as we usually see him having。 It's very much the Veronica show, which is totally fine because shes a badass and I love her。 But one of the main reasons I love this series, is the banter between her and Stoker。Lady Welly is not her usual badass self, there are characters who are back who made me think, "ok, this story line is old, why this。。。"。 So with that, the first half sort of dragged on for me。 However the last half。。。 I actually read in three hours or so (?), it was SO GOOD。 The second half, every character you love or hate from this series so far, just hits you in the face with "WOW!"。 The first half is why I nicked a star off my rating, the second half is what kept it from losing more。 I'm VERY much looking forward to the next book, with that all said! 。。。more

Veronica and Stoker have another adventure。 The story starts a little slow, but in no time the pace begins to speed up until I couldn't put the book down until the wonderful ending。 Excelsior! 3。5 starsA slight letdown after LOVING the previous book, A Murderous Relation brings Veronica and Stoker on a case involving the Royal Family, anarchists, and some return antagonists we had met in earlier books。 I feel the pacing was off in this one, although I do feel as though the characters get better with each new installment。 Eagerly waiting for book 6 to come in at my library!

Five stars again !Cannot stay away from Veronica and Stoker。 All the books in this series are first rate。 Even when I thought, for a brief moment, I may be disappointed, it was just that, a moment。 Love the two main characters each book builds on the previous ones。 The continued growth, the plots, the quick dialogue between characters makes for one of the best series I have read。 Well done。 Just read them all and enjoy。

I love this series but I cannot in good conscience give this a better rating。 It was a struggle to get through this book because there was hardly anything going on。 Some of the characters were real people and I was interested in how their real life story was actually linked to the Jack the Ripper murders, and I did some researching。 Unfortunately, this book was not able to keep my interest, the characters’ detective work was dull, and the dialogue was missing something from previous books。 The r I love this series but I cannot in good conscience give this a better rating。 It was a struggle to get through this book because there was hardly anything going on。 Some of the characters were real people and I was interested in how their real life story was actually linked to the Jack the Ripper murders, and I did some researching。 Unfortunately, this book was not able to keep my interest, the characters’ detective work was dull, and the dialogue was missing something from previous books。 The romance lost it’s slow burn。 You don’t have to write passionate scenes with the main characters for the reader to be able to feel their chemistry but this book just took a break from the longing these characters felt in the previous books and so it lacked emotion。 I will read the next book and I can also say that I am excited for it。 I love the characters and hope that I continue to enjoy the series。 。。。more
