Amari Peters knows three things。

Her big brother Quinton has gone missing。
No one will talk about it。
His mysterious job holds the secret 。 。 。

So when Amari gets an invitation to the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, she’s certain this is her chance to find Quinton。 But first she has to get her head around the new world of the Bureau, where mermaids, aliens and magicians are real, and her roommate is a weredragon。

Amari must compete against kids who’ve known about the supernatural world their whole lives, and when each trainee is awarded a special supernatural talent, Amari is given an illegal talent – one that the Bureau views as dangerous。

Black girl magic is alive and well, quite literally, in this amazing debut novel by B。B。 Alston。 Amari Peters just can't seem to fit in。 Not in her housing projecy, where she and her brother are viewed as outsiders for attending a fancy private school, certainly not at the fancy private school whose students consider the Peters to be "ghetto, scholarship trash," and not even at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs where Amari ends up after her brother, Quinton, disappears。 Things get even worse wh Black girl magic is alive and well, quite literally, in this amazing debut novel by B。B。 Alston。 Amari Peters just can't seem to fit in。 Not in her housing projecy, where she and her brother are viewed as outsiders for attending a fancy private school, certainly not at the fancy private school whose students consider the Peters to be "ghetto, scholarship trash," and not even at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs where Amari ends up after her brother, Quinton, disappears。 Things get even worse when Amari's supernatural power is discovered and is illegal。"Kids who are Harry Potter or Rick Riordan fans will take to this series like ducks to water。 Themes of friendship, solidarity, loyalty, pride in who you are and where you come from and standing up for what you believe in abound。 In one of my favorite scenes, Amari is able to view her bloodline in a series of images and is told, "You are descended from African tribal queens, from fierece warriors who protected the innocent, from renowned travelers who sought the thrill of adventure。 Greatness, like all other traits, can be passed down in the blood from parent to child。 There is resilience in your blood, too。 The willpower to endure seemingly insurmountable obstacles。 Though your ancestors were once slaves, their descendants fought for equal rights。 You have been loved。"Black girl magic, indeed。P。S。 Universal nabbed the rights before the book was even published。 Can't wait to see this one on the big screen。 With Blackish actress Black-ish star Marsai Martin in the title role (and also as a producer) and Don Cheadle coproducing, I have high hopes for this one。 。。。more

A super fun fantasy starring the amazing Amari Peters, overshadowed by her older brother but now that he went missing, everything has gone kind of sideways。 Until Amari winds up following in his footsteps, supernatural footsteps she just found out about。 There's a whole procedure to get her into the training camp which has all of its own rules。 Amari makes a friend, Elsie the weredragon who is also an amazing inventor。 The book takes its time introducing you to the world, and then the last third A super fun fantasy starring the amazing Amari Peters, overshadowed by her older brother but now that he went missing, everything has gone kind of sideways。 Until Amari winds up following in his footsteps, supernatural footsteps she just found out about。 There's a whole procedure to get her into the training camp which has all of its own rules。 Amari makes a friend, Elsie the weredragon who is also an amazing inventor。 The book takes its time introducing you to the world, and then the last third of the book is action, adventure and some twists and turns。 Definitely a series to keep on reading。 Amari has her own take on the world from growing up in the projects and that keeps things interesting too。 。。。more

This fantasy ride will definitely be a hit。 12 yo protagonist Amari - gritty, brave, bold, loyal and looking for genuine friendship - is well-developed and easy to root for in this action-packed, dark-magic fantasy。 The plot hooked me early, was fast and straight-forward, and contained some surprising turns while Alston familiarized readers with his Supernatural World。 I like how he incorporated racism & otherness in both Amari's real and Supernatural worlds。 I did though find there were leaps i This fantasy ride will definitely be a hit。 12 yo protagonist Amari - gritty, brave, bold, loyal and looking for genuine friendship - is well-developed and easy to root for in this action-packed, dark-magic fantasy。 The plot hooked me early, was fast and straight-forward, and contained some surprising turns while Alston familiarized readers with his Supernatural World。 I like how he incorporated racism & otherness in both Amari's real and Supernatural worlds。 I did though find there were leaps in logic a few times。 I can easily see why it's already been picked up to become a movie。 It's nice to see a Black girl join the ranks of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson。 I can't wait for the sequel。Thank you to NetGalley andBalzer + Bray for the ARC in exchange for an honest review。@netgalley #netgalley 。。。more

WOW OKAY。 I had seen everyone talking about this, and it sounded great, but if it's even possible I loved it more than I thought I would。 Especially with everything surrounding J。K。 Rowling, I'm so excited for the future of Amari and her world。 It's exactly what we need right now。 WOW OKAY。 I had seen everyone talking about this, and it sounded great, but if it's even possible I loved it more than I thought I would。 Especially with everything surrounding J。K。 Rowling, I'm so excited for the future of Amari and her world。 It's exactly what we need right now。 。。。more

Amari and the Night Brothers (Supernatural Investigations, #1) by B。B。 Alston was a slight disappointment。 If I had to Amari and the Night Brothers (Supernatural Investigations, #1) a grade, it would have to be a C+。 In my opinion, it's definitely a "girl power / girls can do anything" and "#blackgirlmagic" book。 But, it seriously lacks in the magic and mystical department。 To me, it was more reality than fantasy; the real world stood out more than the supernatural world。 Even though I eventuall Amari and the Night Brothers (Supernatural Investigations, #1) by B。B。 Alston was a slight disappointment。 If I had to Amari and the Night Brothers (Supernatural Investigations, #1) a grade, it would have to be a C+。 In my opinion, it's definitely a "girl power / girls can do anything" and "#blackgirlmagic" book。 But, it seriously lacks in the magic and mystical department。 To me, it was more reality than fantasy; the real world stood out more than the supernatural world。 Even though I eventually will read the sequel novel when it will be released in January 2022。 I won't be in an excited rush to read it like the other books that I loved。 。。。more

Best book I have read in a long time。 The plot is perfect and the ending is surprising, but it makes total sense。 I didn’t want to set it down。 It has the perfect mix of action, mystery, and friendship。 I would recommend this to everyone。

Fantastic storyline and really whimsical。 There were parts of this that gave me goosebumps and I thoroughly enjoyed it。 The only thing that stopped me from giving it 5 stars was the fact it was poorly proofread。 Upon gaining a new proofreader, I would increase this to a 5-star rating。

Hands down the best book I’ve read so far this year。 I would have read it all in one sitting if I could。 Cannot wait to read the next book in the series when it comes out。

I wholeheartedly loved this book。 The world building was so terrific--I loved the different magical departments, the enhanced talents, and the long and dark history between magicians and the rest of the magical world。 Amari is a very loveable character and her struggles with fitting in and living up to her brother's legacy are relatable in spite of her magical surroundings。 This book will inevitably get Harry Potter comparisons because of its magic school setting and some similar tropes (young b I wholeheartedly loved this book。 The world building was so terrific--I loved the different magical departments, the enhanced talents, and the long and dark history between magicians and the rest of the magical world。 Amari is a very loveable character and her struggles with fitting in and living up to her brother's legacy are relatable in spite of her magical surroundings。 This book will inevitably get Harry Potter comparisons because of its magic school setting and some similar tropes (young but talented student enters a world they didn't know existed but are famous within it for reasons beyond their control; Sorting Hat vs power enhancement as a rite of passage to join the school) but this is decidedly its own novel and remains fresh and interesting throughout。 I read it over the weekend and immediately recommended it to a student yesterday, so I imagine it will circulate well with the fantasy crowd。 I can't wait for the next installment in Amari's story! 。。。more

This is great middle grade fantasy book。 I love the main character Amari and the villain is interesting character too。 The world is fascinating and the mystery is well written。 I'm just little bit confused about how the magic system works。 I hope the sequel will have more world building because I don't like to feel confused。 This is great middle grade fantasy book。 I love the main character Amari and the villain is interesting character too。 The world is fascinating and the mystery is well written。 I'm just little bit confused about how the magic system works。 I hope the sequel will have more world building because I don't like to feel confused。 。。。more

A wonderful story with delightful characters and really excellent magic stuff。 It reminded me of a kids version of The Rook, with a secret government agency charged with dealing with magical/supernatural phenomena。 I think it would also be a perfect suggestion for any Harry Potter fans。 And while I loved all the magic stuff, my favorite part is Amari and her new best friend who is a WEREDRAGON what a delight。 A wonderful story with delightful characters and really excellent magic stuff。 It reminded me of a kids version of The Rook, with a secret government agency charged with dealing with magical/supernatural phenomena。 I think it would also be a perfect suggestion for any Harry Potter fans。 And while I loved all the magic stuff, my favorite part is Amari and her new best friend who is a WEREDRAGON what a delight。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Amari and the Night Brothers is a really fun read, with a Men-in-Black style supernatural world and a surprising betrayal at the end。 Especially towards the beginning, it doesn't let you forget that it's aimed at the middle grades, with some childish over dramatics, but when it settles into itself, the writing is quite good。 The moral of the story is heavy-handed, which is a shame; the story speaks for itself and the overt preaching was unnecessary。 Amari and the Night Brothers is a really fun read, with a Men-in-Black style supernatural world and a surprising betrayal at the end。 Especially towards the beginning, it doesn't let you forget that it's aimed at the middle grades, with some childish over dramatics, but when it settles into itself, the writing is quite good。 The moral of the story is heavy-handed, which is a shame; the story speaks for itself and the overt preaching was unnecessary。 。。。more
