Summary

It's time to go back to basics! If you're interested in art, but find that it's becoming an increasingly expensive hobby, The Organic Artist is just the book for you!

The Organic Artist encourages you to return to those days when art was made with all-natural materials, like charcoal and birch bark。 Immersing you in the natural world, The Organic Artist seeks to inspire creativity by connecting you to your organic roots。

In addition to offering a wide variety of suggestions for using nature as supplies for art, this book also introduces the concepts of awareness and perception that are foundational to the creative process。 Readers will refine drawing skills, as well as increase their appreciation for the visual arts and the natural landscape。

Some of the projects and skills covered include the following: making paper and wild ink, working with soapstone, clay, wood, and rawhide, printmaking and stenciling, natural pigments and dyes, camouflage and body painting, and nature journaling。

What a beautifully compiled book。 From the pictures to the format, to super detailed step by step instructions, and really helpful tips。 I had been eyeing this book for a long time! What really helps is also following the author's instagram account, it feels like a companion edition to it。 In fact, that is how I came to know about this book。 I think everyone should have The organic Artist regardless of being an artist or not。 It’s foraging and cooking up spells in your kitchen and, outdoors, how What a beautifully compiled book。 From the pictures to the format, to super detailed step by step instructions, and really helpful tips。 I had been eyeing this book for a long time! What really helps is also following the author's instagram account, it feels like a companion edition to it。 In fact, that is how I came to know about this book。 I think everyone should have The organic Artist regardless of being an artist or not。 It’s foraging and cooking up spells in your kitchen and, outdoors, how can it not be everyone’s cup of tea! A delightful collection of recipes and how-to's for making your own inks and tools to use those inks。 Not high difficulty but often time consuming and messy, this book is great for the artist who wants to bring an organic or rustic feel to their supplies。 A delightful collection of recipes and how-to's for making your own inks and tools to use those inks。 Not high difficulty but often time consuming and messy, this book is great for the artist who wants to bring an organic or rustic feel to their supplies。 。。。more

I saw this book on Netgalley for kids and actually went to the library in search of it。 sadly, that one isn't available yet, but I DID find this one!! Just as well, as I want to explore making my own supplies from nature! The book did not disappoint! This book not only tells you how to use natural materials, it gives recipes, and even photos of making them。 Then it has actual photos of sample works produced with the supplies so you can get an idea of what the results will look like。 I can't wait I saw this book on Netgalley for kids and actually went to the library in search of it。 sadly, that one isn't available yet, but I DID find this one!! I'm in love with this book。 I got it from the library and now want to pick up my own copy。 Neddo is an incredible artist, all the more so because he creates his art using charcoal, ink, paintbrushes, pencils, paints, etc。 that he makes entirely himself from wildcrafted items。 Some of the projects are quite labor intensive but it's truly inspirational。 Full of full color photos, this is a fantastic guide to foraging your own art materials。 I'm in love with this book。 I got it from the library and now want to pick up my own copy。 Neddo is an incredible artist, all the more so because he creates his art using charcoal, ink, paintbrushes, pencils, paints, etc。 that he makes entirely himself from wildcrafted items。 Some of the projects are quite labor intensive but it's truly inspirational。 Full of full color photos, this is a fantastic guide to foraging your own art materials。 。。。more

On the outside, it looked like yet another 'help yourself' book。 On the inside, it turned out to be hilarious and full of simple things to do。 It's not marketed for children, but many of the projects are totally family fun, despite a popular belief that kids can't be closer than 15 m from a hot stove or an open fire。 They can and they can enjoy it。 We definitely enjoyed making inks, pots, and pens。 Thinking about making crayons。。。。 I remember I made them in middle school, by a recipe from a book On the outside, it looked like yet another 'help yourself' book。 On the inside, it turned out to be hilarious and full of simple things to do。 It's not marketed for children, but many of the projects are totally family fun, despite a popular belief that kids can't be closer than 15 m from a hot stove or an open fire。 They can and they can enjoy it。 We definitely enjoyed making inks, pots, and pens。 Thinking about making crayons。。。。 I remember I made them in middle school, by a recipe from a book published in 1830s and it was called a chemical pencil :) 。。。more

Very informative and very detailed techniques with pictures。 Not all techniques are that eco or animal friendly but overall a very useful and insightful book。

This book has lots of great ideas, but right now most of them are not something that I can do。 It shows you how to make your own charcoal, paints and even brushes。 I would love to try this someday but right now it's just not practical with my time and level of artistic skill。 I definitely want to revisit this book some day。 This book has lots of great ideas, but right now most of them are not something that I can do。 It shows you how to make your own charcoal, paints and even brushes。 I would love to try this someday but right now it's just not practical with my time and level of artistic skill。 I definitely want to revisit this book some day。 。。。more

Okay。 I didn't read this word for word。 It isn't that kind of book。 I doubt I'll ever read it that way。 This is a reference book of how-tos。 It is well illustrated and the instructions for each craft is well-written。 I loved what I saw here so much that as the book became due back to the library I had to go to Amazon and buy my own copy。 By the way, our librarian recommended it to me。 Thanks, Julie! This book is excellent。 As a teaching artist, and a proponent of the 'outdoor classroom', this book is on point! It inspires you to want to try everything out, and show others the beauty of creating through nature without chemicals。 The clear instructions with fantastic images go great together, so easy to understand and follow。 This book can save school systems from overspending on the art budget, and will crossover as a health and wellness activity with children。 I am very inspired to share Th This book is excellent。 As a teaching artist, and a proponent of the 'outdoor classroom', this book is on point! I respect the author a great deal for how committed he is to the idea of creating art supplies from foraged materials! There are a few ideas I think I might end up trying, like making charcoal, pens and possibly some of the paints。 There were a few grammar and spelling mistakes that made me wish he'd had a better editor, but overall it was a captivating book that made me really excited to see what kind of materials I can forage close to home。 I respect the author a great deal for how committed he is to the idea of creating art supplies from foraged materials! This was a fun book it was easy to read。 The instructions were very clear and easy to understand。 The tools needed were common thing most would have around the house。 I will definitely use some of the methods that are described in the book, I have worked with artists and know quite a few that will love this book since they are always complaining about the cost and quality of their supplies。

This book is SO neat。 Such great ideas for artists and the like to get in touch with nature to create, the thing artists do best。But。 Well。 Yeah。This is all a bit much for me。 Like, overwhelmingly a bit。 While I don't think I'll be heading into nature to find an elderberry stick and some acorns to make a pen, I would sign up for a class with the author to learn how to do this stuff in a heart beat。 I think it would be fascinating to watch him, and have him teach me even the simplest thing。 Very This book is SO neat。 Such great ideas for artists and the like to get in touch with nature to create, the thing artists do best。But。 Well。 Yeah。This is all a bit much for me。 Like, overwhelmingly a bit。 While I don't think I'll be heading into nature to find an elderberry stick and some acorns to make a pen, I would sign up for a class with the author to learn how to do this stuff in a heart beat。 I think it would be fascinating to watch him, and have him teach me even the simplest thing。 Very nifty。 。。。more

As someone who likes to draw with pencil and charcoal, I was attracted and curious about how you could create all the stuff you are using。Art is a way of expressing yourself so being able to make your own tools make it even more special。When I was reading this book and starting to want to make my own Charcoal by going camping or trying to make my paper, someone point out that it's easier and faster to go buy your pen and paper at the store。 True, especially when living in a big city。 But deep do As someone who likes to draw with pencil and charcoal, I was attracted and curious about how you could create all the stuff you are using。Art is a way of expressing yourself so being able to make your own tools make it even more special。When I was reading this book and starting to want to make my own Charcoal by going camping or trying to make my paper, someone point out that it's easier and faster to go buy your pen and paper at the store。 True, especially when living in a big city。 But deep down, I'm thrilled at the possibility to personalize my material, to make something natural。 I'm sure the colors will be different and full of real life。 That's why this book attracted me。 The explanation seem easy to try and their is a peaceful feeling while watching all this imperfect pens, brushes, paper create something beautiful。Like it!Luciehttp://newbooksonmyselves。blogspot。fr。。。 。。。more

I received and read this book in an ebook format as a free review copy。While not all these projects are going to be reasonably feasible for artists who do not have a good workshop space, and most of these projects do require some skill and tools, the general theme of this book is great for any artist, hobbyist or otherwise。 I like the idea of making my own printmaking inks from scratch, and assuming my cat cooperates, I'm hoping to try making a fine paintbrush with his discarded whiskers sometime I received and read this book in an ebook format as a free review copy。While not all these projects are going to be reasonably feasible for artists who do not have a good workshop space, and most of these projects do require some skill and tools, the general theme of this book is great for any artist, hobbyist or otherwise。 I like the idea of making my own printmaking inks from scratch, and assuming my cat cooperates, I'm hoping to try making a fine paintbrush with his discarded whiskers sometime soon。 Some of the drawing inks shown in this book are also really tempting。 I was not impressed enough to rate this book a full 5 stars because the writing outside the recipes and project instructions needed more editing in my opinion。 I really disliked the intro text, and almost didn't read the rest of the book after I finished it, but I am glad I stuck with it。 。。。more
