Summary

As it was in Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, and Othello, so it is in life。 Most forms of private vice and public evil are kindled and sustained by lies。 Acts of adultery and other personal betrayals, financial fraud, government corruption—even murder and genocide—generally require an additional moral defect: a willingness to lie。

In Lying, best-selling author and neuroscientist Sam Harris argues that we can radically simplify our lives and improve society by merely telling the truth in situations where others often lie。 He focuses on "white" lies—those lies we tell for the purpose of sparing people discomfort—for these are the lies that most often tempt us。 And they tend to be the only lies that good people tell while imagining that they are being good in the process。

Surely most people could write a pretty good essay if asked is it correct to lie or not? Most would come to the conclusion on their own that there would be different severity’s and outcomes。 Sam Harris has just gone further and written the essay at one stage asking - would you lie if a murderer came to your door to kill a child who was hiding in your house?

Makes a good case for radical honesty

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I read this because I found it on a friend's bookshelf。 On the first page was a note from one of her friends that said this essay has been his moral compass for the last 6 years。 Of course, I could not resist reading it。The gist of Harris's argument is that in almost no circumstances should we lie。 I like the argument against lying as applied to the life I generally live: relatively privileged, in the US。 There are many times I have told white lies because I think the truth will be hurtful to so I read this because I found it on a friend's bookshelf。 On the first page was a note from one of her friends that said this essay has been his moral compass for the last 6 years。 Of course, I could not resist reading it。The gist of Harris's argument is that in almost no circumstances should we lie。 I like the argument against lying as applied to the life I generally live: relatively privileged, in the US。 There are many times I have told white lies because I think the truth will be hurtful to some and inconvenient for all involved, but I have experienced the initial small lie sending me into a cascade of untruths that took more mental and emotional energy to keep up than the initial energy saved from hiding the truth to begin with。 But when generalized into a general principle for all people, the argument does not hold up as well。 Harris finds ways to accommodate instances where I think everyone agrees we should tell a lie, e。g。 hiding a kid in your basement from a serial murderer; living in a society with unfair laws, in a way that feels generally unsatisfactory: lying as another "weapon" you would use against any unjust situation。 But it is a short book and definitely, I think, worth a read。 。。。more

A great insights into lying and telling truth, gives you a very great perspective on how life is going to be easy of you could just say things the way they are。

Sam Harris' book argues that lying is never the right answer and that there is far greater burden and harm that can come from it than good。 One of my favorite lines from the book was: "Are you concealing a secret that you would want to know about if you were the other person?" His arguments are valid, although he does sometimes use extreme and unrealistic cases to prove his point, which was a bit annoying。 I also did notice some logical inconsistencies between his essays and the appendices at th Sam Harris' book argues that lying is never the right answer and that there is far greater burden and harm that can come from it than good。 One of my favorite lines from the book was: "Are you concealing a secret that you would want to know about if you were the other person?" There are not that many books that have changed the details of how I live my day-to-day life, but this is one of them。 Really interesting take on the lies (big and little) that we tell ourselves and others, and the implications of lies, both individually and culturally。 Great little read with big ideas。

This is a small book that is under 100 pages, and it is more of a philosophical reflection of the virtue of not lying at all, which of course, is more or less possible。 The book challenges the reader in many different situations of the lure of the "white lie," and other "regular" lies。 Ultimately, it is a book about self mastery in self control and self responsibility。 I say this because when a person flows in a self responsibility state, free of the need or desire of intentional deception to ot This is a small book that is under 100 pages, and it is more of a philosophical reflection of the virtue of not lying at all, which of course, is more or less possible。 The book challenges the reader in many different situations of the lure of the "white lie," and other "regular" lies。 Ultimately, it is a book about self mastery in self control and self responsibility。 I say this because when a person flows in a self responsibility state, free of the need or desire of intentional deception to others, that person has no need for the chaos creating lie in the first place。 They can enjoy and respect life on their terms with the pride that comes with curtailing deception。 While on some level we are wired for deception since that is tied to survival, most of us no longer live in tribes; especially when you have controlled your environment to the point where you have your work figured out。 The book reminded me of Robert Trivers book on why deception is prevalent in our actions, but also gave a spark of hope that consciously lying to someone, in the end, is a simple choice by us。 。。。more

Sam Harris doesn't seem to have a clear enough understanding on this topic to justify writing this book。 It does include some very good points, but it is certainly lacking in its depth, contains a lot of uncertainty and in many ways just seem like one guy's opinion on the matter。 Sam Harris doesn't seem to have a clear enough understanding on this topic to justify writing this book。 It does include some very good points, but it is certainly lacking in its depth, contains a lot of uncertainty and in many ways just seem like one guy's opinion on the matter。 。。。more

This book serves as a gentle reminder of all that one let's go of when choosing to lie。Though the temptation to lie is ever present and might appear to be the only option available in many situations, hindsight often tells otherwise。 We often forget that"to lie is to infringe upon the freedom of those we care about。""To lie is to recoil from relationship。"(Lying, Sam Harris)A good book to read。 This book serves as a gentle reminder of all that one let's go of when choosing to lie。Though the temptation to lie is ever present and might appear to be the only option available in many situations, hindsight often tells otherwise。 We often forget that"to lie is to infringe upon the freedom of those we care about。""To lie is to recoil from relationship。"(Lying, Sam Harris)A good book to read。 。。。more

This book was short? It was less of a book and more like a ramble? Like, if you met someone at a bar and they were just like "What is lying?" and had clearly just taken a class in ethics (or binge watched 'The Good Place')。 I didn't feel like I heard anything new in this book but it is a good jumping off point for discussion。 This book was short? Like a lot of what Sam Harris seems to believe, his assertions are entirely rational on the face, but his unwillingness to recognize mitigating circumstances that could degrade the validity of his claims makes him come off as (perhaps willfully) ignorant of the realities that people who aren't him face。 I appreciate the aspirations of this book's core argument, but his arrogance makes his message somewhat unpalatable。 Like a lot of what Sam Harris seems to believe, his assertions are entirely rational on the face, but his unwillingness to recognize mitigating circumstances that could degrade the validity of his claims makes him come off as (perhaps willfully) ignorant of the realities that people who aren't him face。 I appreciate the aspirations of this book's core argument, but his arrogance makes his message somewhat unpalatable。 。。。more

Sometimes, the most obvious things, when stated in bold and on your face, seem the most extraordinary of the statements。 This book is the best example to testify to what I just said。 Perhaps one of the first moral lessons our parents or guardians impart us with, even as a toddler, is to never lie。 And yet, there has not been one day that has gone by without us lying, to ourselves or to someone else。 We all lie, be it about something as trivial as falsely complimenting someone we like(or flattery Sometimes, the most obvious things, when stated in bold and on your face, seem the most extraordinary of the statements。 This book is the best example to testify to what I just said。 Perhaps one of the first moral lessons our parents or guardians impart us with, even as a toddler, is to never lie。 And yet, there has not been one day that has gone by without us lying, to ourselves or to someone else。 We all lie, be it about something as trivial as falsely complimenting someone we like(or flattery, you may say) or lying about something larger than life, which a person may intend to do by having extramarital affairs。 The psychology of why one would lie, the social, personal and mental implications of lying and the midset of pahological liars is what Sam Harris tries to explore in this one day read by often coming to the same conclusion each time- Lying is not a solution, it is just the beginning to a hundred new problems。 。。。more
