Summary

There's decorating, and then there's organizing。 From the Instagram-sensation home experts (with a serious fan club that includes Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Mindy Kaling), here is an accessible, room-by-room guide to establishing new order in your home。

Believe this: every single space in your house has the potential to function efficiently and look great。 The mishmash of summer and winter clothes in the closet? Yep。 Even the dreaded junk drawer? Consider it done。 And the best news: it's not hard to do--in fact, it's a lot of fun。

From the home organizers who made their orderly eye candy the method that everyone swears by comes Joanna and Clea's signature approach to decluttering。 The Home Edit walks you through paring down your belongings in every room, arranging them in a stunning and easy-to-find way (hello, labels!), and maintaining the system so you don't need another do-over in six months。 When you're done, you'll not only know exactly where to find things, but you'll also love the way it looks。

A masterclass and look book in one, The Home Edit is filled with bright photographs and detailed tips, from placing plastic dishware in a drawer where little hands can reach to categorizing pantry items by color (there's nothing like a little ROYGBIV to soothe the soul)。 Above all, it's like having your best friends at your side to help you turn the chaos into calm。

Skimmed the whole thing because the set up is: show a picture and then write a billeted list of what is happening in the picture and encourage readers to buy similar things。 I like pretty pictures, but you can just follow The Home Edit on Pinterest for the same effect。

Clea and Joanna are zany friends bringing massive inspo。 They are serving up organization, wonder, and bringing out the joy in simplifying the whole dang system。 I'd love to have them do an edit just to hang, create, and laugh。 They have a view that's intentional in putting it all together。 Gonna give it all a whirl, Yayyy! Momma toss, give, and keep repeat! Not use and maybe you can make crafts, umm yep。 LOL!!! This is not the worst home organizing book I've ever read, but it is the most nauseating。 Remember the TV show "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous"? This is the home organizing book version of that show。 The pictures in this book are usually of the pantries, closets, and rooms of rich and famous American entertainers。Yes, there are some takeaways from this book that anyone, even those in tiny spaces can use。 However, those takeaways can be found in other and better home organizing books。If you wa This is not the worst home organizing book I've ever read, but it is the most nauseating。 Remember the TV show "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous"? This is the home organizing book version of that show。 The pictures in this book are usually of the pantries, closets, and rooms of rich and famous American entertainers。Yes, there are some takeaways from this book that anyone, even those in tiny spaces can use。 However, those takeaways can be found in other and better home organizing books。If you want to see how the really rich in the U。S。 live, this is the book。 Peek into their kitchen pantries, their bathroom storage, and their enormous closets and playrooms。 About a year ago, I requested this book from my library and it's taken me almost a year to get my hands on it (or at least the Kindle version)。 I did watch the Netflix show based on this book, so I knew what I was getting into。Since the late 1980s, I've been intrigued by design and decor。 IKEA fascinates me because it intentionally designs for small spaces and makes good use of space。 (Yes, I know they use a lot of fake wood and plastic, but the organizing concept is what I like。) In the U。S。, I've watched houses and apartments grow in space but also saw that they weren't designed to make use of space and storage。 I'm always frustrated by living spaces that build big, but they don't build smart。 This book caters to those who live large and in large spaces。This book annoyed me because the two women who founded THE push a lot of plastic。 Yuk。 I think they now have a deal with the Container Store。 Granted, they are proponents of store like with like, which I agree with。 However, there are better options than plastic, especially for clothing。 If you've looked into quality storage that's made of cloth and wood, you know it can be expensive。 However, I'd rather a few quality storage containers than plastic for clothing。 I like to utilize wood baskets and boxes as well as ceramic bowls。 My choices may not be matchy-matchy, but they provide my home a look that takes into account the five elements of nature。They are also all about labeling things。 While labeling can be helpful, and I do it, they overdo it。 My files are labeled and boxes that need to be labeled are labeled。 The people who seem to love this style of organizing are those who want a sterile store look or are into the rainbow look。 Or maybe the people who love this book are new to organizing and don't have a clue。 Again, it's not the worst organizing book, and if you're brand new to organizing, you might find it helpful, but there are better books out there。 If you must read this, check it out from your local library。 If you then love it, then buy it。 A personal plea on your cleanout or your "edit" at THE calls it - please be responsible and kind to people and our planet:Donate clothing and cleaning goods to a shelter or a charity that can truly benefit。If you clean out your pantry, and the items are still good, find a food pantry or donate to a food drive。Animal shelters will often take cleaning goods, newspapers, and old towels (the torn, the stained, etc。)Worn out textiles can be donated for recycling。 Please do not trash。 Textile waste is a huge problem in the U。S。 that affects water quality and more。 Goodwill is one such place that will recycle, but larger markets may have other options。 Donate your books, DVDs, CDs, VHS (yes, there's a market!), records, magazines, etc。 to your local library。 Many libraries resell these items if they don't shelve them My library takes magazines, which are often bought by people who create vision boards。Dispose of chemicals responsibly。 Your area may have a hazardous waste facility。Check with your animal shelters about donating unwanted towels that people。 。。。more

Is this a miracle worker or something we’ve never heard of? No。 Do I particularly car for the Roygbiv method of sorting things? No。 But do I love organizing? Yes。 So I mean, this was just a pretty book to read。 Have you seen the pictures? Nothing to earth shattering but good lists on how to categorize things。

Some nice photography, a few good tips, but overall didn’t have a ton of practical advice。 But was a nicely designed book — and of course I appreciate containers and color coding!

Marie Kondo's book is preferable, because it is much more mindful in how it explains choosing which items to keep and which donate or throw away。 I found this book to be more vague, and I was disappointed with the closet section, because many of the spaces still looked cluttered。 I found it much more helpful to watch the first episode of the show on Netflix (The doctor's closet), because it showed how to make a closet functional and uncluttered。 Marie Kondo's book is preferable, because it is much more mindful in how it explains choosing which items to keep and which donate or throw away。 I found this book to be more vague, and I was disappointed with the closet section, because many of the spaces still looked cluttered。 I found it much more helpful to watch the first episode of the show on Netflix (The doctor's closet), because it showed how to make a closet functional and uncluttered。 。。。more

Not much info at all here unless you've never organized anything in your life。 Lots of pictures of famous people's rooms that they organized。 Also, lots of pictures of items organized into ROYGBIV order, which they act like they discovered。 And who has paper straws in every color?? I’m giving this “book” two stars only because I spent $25 on it and I have to pretend this was not a complete waste of money。 It was。 If I ever walked in someone’s house and saw it organized the way these authors recommend, I’d think the person has too much free time , is suffering from some sort of disorder or co-owns a container store。 Most of the solutions they recommend are short lived and not eco-friendly。 According to them it’s good to own a big house with tons of storage space so you ca I’m giving this “book” two stars only because I spent $25 on it and I have to pretend this was not a complete waste of money。 It was。 If I ever walked in someone’s house and saw it organized the way these authors recommend, I’d think the person has too much free time , is suffering from some sort of disorder or co-owns a container store。 Most of the solutions they recommend are short lived and not eco-friendly。 According to them it’s good to own a big house with tons of storage space so you can go and buy everything in bulk in case of。。。 what?? Your skin develops a mysterious condition that requires two to three lotion bottles per day? Or you have secret addiction for cliff bars , then hurry up and sort them out by the flavor and color and expiration date。 It’s a life changing decision, trust me!Funny, but to me the best thing about this book was seeing some of celebrities’ closets and playrooms。 There was one more thing that I found absolutely outrageous。 They say in this book that the little toys that kids bring from the parties in their “favor bags” should be thrown out immediately without even getting them home 。 Really? How about we all agree that the goody bags for kids were bad idea to begin with? How about instead of buying hundreds containers and baskets to store toys by color, LEGO by type and so on, we just STOP BUYING so much stuff altogether? I’m not minimalist, but looking at some pictures in this book made me terrified of how crowded (even If somewhat organized) our life is。 。。。more

I loved the netflix series and while this book doesn't have anything really new over and above what was in the series, it was enjoyable and had some good tips。 I don't agree with everything they espouse (ROYGBIV books are a tragedy in my life, where books are organized by genre), but some of their tips -- especially about the edit and how and what to keep -- are quite helpful。 I really like the way they frame some of their ideas。 I loved the netflix series and while this book doesn't have anything really new over and above what was in the series, it was enjoyable and had some good tips。 I don't agree with everything they espouse (ROYGBIV books are a tragedy in my life, where books are organized by genre), but some of their tips -- especially about the edit and how and what to keep -- are quite helpful。 I really like the way they frame some of their ideas。 。。。more

Loved it。 If you follow their simple procedure it actually works。 I am slowly organizing my house, one drawer at a time。 It's so do-able。 I also bought a label maker。 For me the game-changing piece was that the items need to go in some kind of container。 I'd previously heard "a place for everything and everything in its place" but now that I know the place is some kind of container。。。 that has the label of what goes there on it somewhere。。。 not only I but everyone else in my house can understand Loved it。 If you follow their simple procedure it actually works。 I am slowly organizing my house, one drawer at a time。 It's so do-able。 I also bought a label maker。 For me the game-changing piece was that the items need to go in some kind of container。 I'd previously heard "a place for everything and everything in its place" but now that I know the place is some kind of container。。。 that has the label of what goes there on it somewhere。。。 not only I but everyone else in my house can understand it。 My pantry shelves have not collapsed in 2 months。 。。。more

It’s a pretty book with a lot of good advice but mostly pretty pictures of rooms that most of us who do not live in huge houses cannot relate to。 Hopefully their second book has more applicable advice, this is more like an inspirational photo book。

Mainly pretty pictures to get the inspiration going It was definitely a quick fun easy read and gets you inspired to organize, but I’m not sure if there was hard advice。 A lot is really still left up to you, which makes sense since there is no “one size fits all” for organizing solutions。 But I think seeing their Instagram is also just as helpful。 At least to me。 But I still love them and think they are so good at what they do, but I may just need them to come over to my house LOL!

It’s as easy as unloading your dishwasher and putting your silverware away, especially if you followed our advice about labeling and using the ROYGBIV system (see this page and this page)。ONE IN, ONE OUTThat’s why we recommend making sure that if you’re bringing things in, you’re also taking things out。 As we always say: You can have the item or you can have the space, but you can’t have both。 。。。more
