Famously referred to as part of the 'Axis-of-Evil'， North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today。 A series of manmade and natural catastrophes have also left it one of the poorest。 When the fortress-like country recently opened the door a crack to foreign investment， cartoonist Guy Delisle found himself in its capital Pyongyang on a work visa for a French film animation company， becoming one of the few Westerners to witness current conditions in the surreal showcase city。

This was sort of interesting because the subject matter is so little known， and I enjoyed some of the art， but the author dehumanized the people of N Korea and clearly showed himself to be a jerk （and sexist）。 Even the cover reveals his attitude。 In a way， the book is worth reading because it makes the limitations of the western travelogue more obvious than most。

It could have been interesting， it was really promising but in the end it's the same old， a million times repeated， western anti-Korean propaganda: Koreans are subhumans with no free will， robots that serve a ridiculous hereditary regime that only has bad things to be talked about and their culture is inferior to ours， bla， bla， bla。 The author even says in the book that he can get more "information" about Korea outside the country but he still uses his short stay to bellow out all those things It could have been interesting， it was really promising but in the end it's the same old， a million times repeated， western anti-Korean propaganda: Koreans are subhumans with no free will， robots that serve a ridiculous hereditary regime that only has bad things to be talked about and their culture is inferior to ours， bla， bla， bla。 The author even says in the book that he can get more "information" about Korea outside the country but he still uses his short stay to bellow out all those things he learnt （prejudices） in other countries as if now they were true even though he has no proof！ But it gets worse: the character is not likeable at all， on the contrary， one comes to really dislike his racist， xenofobe and misogynistic comments and questions his taste in humour。 Deslile comes out as a the typical westerner with a massive prejudice towards anything not western， who has a superiority complex and believes to be morally on top of everything he encounters: he believes he has the supreme truth and everything he lives through in his two month stay in Pyongyang is analysed through this prism。 The art is as shallow as the story and the message （I wouldn't make this comment if at least the story had some taste）。 So there。 Same western crap about this extremely interesting country。 Not informative。 Will work for those who are looking for confirmation bias。 For those who are looking for an interesting， different view of the DPRK， skip this one， it's shit。 。。。more

I was rather fascinated by this read because I know very little about North Korea。 It's a country that no one I know has visited and my awareness of its cultural details often fall victim to the classic narrative of dictatorship， whether by news reel or satirical art。 So to discover what it's like for a tourist here revealed more than I'd ever known。 It moves easily and charmingly， though its narrator-author-illustrator at times ventures into a tone that has you siding with what he's slighting。 I was rather fascinated by this read because I know very little about North Korea。 It's a country that no one I know has visited and my awareness of its cultural details often fall victim to the classic narrative of dictatorship， whether by news reel or satirical art。 So to discover what it's like for a tourist here revealed more than I'd ever known。 It moves easily and charmingly， though its narrator-author-illustrator at times ventures into a tone that has you siding with what he's slighting。 At times， it's a creative enlightening his readers about an interesting， though bleak place; at times， it's a white man being sardonic in a foreign land。 While its straightforwardness is its strength， I couldn't shake a confusing wind within me。 The regime is a powerful bummer， but its people have been subjected to it for generations and here they're grouped together， which lacks nuance and empathy。 But as far as travel writing goes， I appreciated how little we know or learn about Guy， and instead we're given his experiences as a grand， curious whole。 It's like reading someone's diary， except they can also draw。 Everything he did， we did; everything he saw， we saw。 I've never been to North Korea， but I know a Guy。 。。。more

Pyongyang es una novela gráfica que cuenta la experiencia del animador de series de dibujos Guy Deslile cuando tiene que vivir una temporada en un hotel de la capital de Corea del Norte por cuestiones de trabajo。 En él el artista retrata el choque cultural al llegar allí y el control al que está sometido la población。Siempre me llaman la atención las historias que tratan sobre Corea del Norte porque me parece leer una novela distópica， cuando no es así。 El autor sabe transmitir la vigilancia a l Pyongyang es una novela gráfica que cuenta la experiencia del animador de series de dibujos Guy Deslile cuando tiene que vivir una temporada en un hotel de la capital de Corea del Norte por cuestiones de trabajo。 En él el artista retrata el choque cultural al llegar allí y el control al que está sometido la población。Siempre me llaman la atención las historias que tratan sobre Corea del Norte porque me parece leer una novela distópica， cuando no es así。 El autor sabe transmitir la vigilancia a la que estaba sometido desde que entra al país。 Le inspeccionan la maleta en busca de objetos que consideren peligrosos para el régimen， va acompañado de un guía que debe saber dónde se encuentra en cada momento。。。 Nos presenta una ciudad oscura， triste y sofocante。 Con las pocas fotos que salen del país， es de agradecer que haya dibujado lo que vio allí para así tener más conocimiento sobre lo que ocurre。Cuenta varias experiencias que me sorprendieron como la conversación con un norcoreano que afirmó que allí no había personas discapacitadas porque todos son "fuertes， inteligentes y saludables"， que por la noche toda la ciudad esté apagada excepto para iluminar figuras del dictador y más relatos que impresionan。 Guy Delisle nos acerca el máximo posible a lo que tiene que ser vivir en Pyongyang。Por otro lado， no pude pasar por alto algunos comentarios racistas y machistas que hicieron que tuviera que leer dos veces la página para comprobar si realmente lo estaba entendiendo bien。 Está claro el desconocimiento y la falta de respeto del dibujante canadiense hacia las personas asiáticas en general， calificando a los habitantes de Corea del Norte como estúpidos e insultando a unos huéspedes chinos del hotel o usando estereotipos。 La parte machista fue sobre todo patente cuando la guía de un museo estaba contando las torturas que los estadounidenses infligían sobre ellos y él piensa en lo guapa que es y todas las torturas que puede hacerle a ella （？）。A pesar de haberme entretenido y enseñado aspectos que no conocía sobre Pyongyang， hay que tener en cuenta algunos mensajes machistas y racistas que hacen que el libro baje de puntos。 。。。more

Pyongyang is an eye-opening graphic novel about a french Canadian animator who is placed in North Korea。 What I thought was really cool and interesting about Pyongyang was how the author Guy Delisle deliberately brought no colour to the entire graphic novel。 Creating a mood of depression and dullness， reflecting North Korea。 Overall a very intriguing book。

“The pick in the picture isn’t the same as the one on the wall。 I think of mentioning it to our charming guide， but why bother in a country that’s devoid of common sense？” Sigh。 I knew things were not going to go great for this one the moment I saw on the first page that the author decided to bring ''1984'' from George Orwell inside of North Korea。When I found this book and saw so many good comments about it I was thrilled and happy， since the little things you can find about North Korea are “The pick in the picture isn’t the same as the one on the wall。 I think of mentioning it to our charming guide， but why bother in a country that’s devoid of common sense？” Sigh。 I knew things were not going to go great for this one the moment I saw on the first page that the author decided to bring ''1984'' from George Orwell inside of North Korea。When I found this book and saw so many good comments about it I was thrilled and happy， since the little things you can find about North Korea are incredibly minimal， I thought reading the experiences of a cartoonist living in Pyongyang for a few months would be great。 From the beginning and to my unpleasant surprise， this author did nothing more than to give me a stomachache。 The tone in his book was fueled by arrogance， ethnocentrism， racism， and sometimes even predatory behavior。 To admit that I had to pause a few times during my reading experience to breathe and calm down is not an exaggeration。 You can tell very well what the author thinks about North Koreans and other Asians， he has this Western/European superior insensitive mindset while making ''witty'' remarks against an oppressive culture so completely different from his Canadian ass。 Even when yes， he boldly criticized North Korea's regime and gave out a few interesting insights about their idiosyncrasy。 Sadly， this little information is not good enough to even be worth it next to all the other disrespectful things he does throughout the story。 ''Our guide is truly stunning， and listening to her graphic descriptions， I think up a few tortures of my own that I wouldn't mind inflicting on her。'' The danger he always made his guides and translators go through was making me so nervous and anxious。 Does he believe their guides wanted to stick by his whiny little ass all of the time because they wanted to be blessed by his holy anglo-Canadian presence？ He even got the balls to call those people ''brain dead，'' and also addressed them as his own personal ''servants''。 To all the people excusing this author's actions behind a 'This is a satire book or even a black humor one'' IT IS NOT， the label for this work is 'Politics' and 'Travel'。 I wouldn't even bother reading it if it had other labels。 Besides， you do not need that many brain cells to understand that making fun of people's culture， starvation， and disappearances inside North Korea is not Nobel Prize satirical worth。 If you are looking for an unbiased opinion on such a mysterious country as North Korea， do not even bother with this boring， pompous， lazy art novel。 。。。more
