Summary

Pipes herald the arrival of gypsies on their annual visit to Macondo where José Arcadio Buendía and his wife have started their new life。 Neither can know the significance of the indecipherable manuscript that the gypsy Melquíades passes them。 Plagues of insomnia, civil war, hauntings and vendettas push memories of the manuscript aside。 Few remember its existence and only one will discover the hidden message that it holds。。。

One Hundred Years of Solitude is re-issued on Gabriel García Márquez 's birthday to celebrate the publication of his books as ebooks for the first time。

There is so, so much to say about this book。First, I can't believe how seldom its humor is brought up by others! There's a lot of focus placed on the heavy, cynical, serious elements, but there's also many absurd and silly and tongue-in-cheek and clever elements!Even while mixing all those things, García Márquez subtly shifts the feel of the narrative as it progresses。 Mind, this is an entirely character-driven story, with little to no real plot beyond the lifespan of the Buendía family and thei There is so, so much to say about this book。First, I can't believe how seldom its humor is brought up by others! There's a lot of focus placed on the heavy, cynical, serious elements, but there's also many absurd and silly and tongue-in-cheek and clever elements!Even while mixing all those things, García Márquez subtly shifts the feel of the narrative as it progresses。 Mind, this is an entirely character-driven story, with little to no real plot beyond the lifespan of the Buendía family and their town of Macondo。 Folks who prefer plot-driven stories may find this book incredibly boring! But as time passes, the family, town, and narrative itself seem to shift and mature in a way。 The beginnings of all three feature many fantastic elements。 There are flights of fancy viewed with an almost childlike wonder。 Time feels more sprawling。But as things progress, they become more grounded in reality (though never entirely), and more serious events and concerns pop up。 The little town of Macondo starts without even a mayor, but gradually sees Colonel Aureliano Buendía's war, the influence of foreign colonizing powers, and the high tension of the banana company worker strikes。 Time gradually speeds up to the hurricane pace of the ending。Across this lifespan of the Buendía family and Macondo, there's a lot going on, and García Márquez brilliantly connects all of it together。 Even fanciful elements are not careless。 I feel it has high reread value, and might even consider an immediate reread if I didn't have so much else to get to right now。I do have some warnings。 While the narrative is fairly linear in time, there are some overlapping points where events are retraced when the focus has moved between characters。 This isn't so bad, so long as you can keep track of the many similarly-named ones。 I recommend an edition that provides a family tree, like that from Harper Perennial Modern Classics。There are also many Content Warnings, some rather significant: violence, murder (including mass-murder), death (including of children), sexual content, sexual harassment, sexual assault/rape, pedophilia/child sexual abuse/relationships between adults and minors, incest, animal abuse and death (including animal fighting and beastiality), suicide and attempts, self-harm, racism and racist slurs, homophobic slurs, miscarriage, blood, vomit, and infidelity。The prevalence of some of this, especially of the incest and problematic relationships between adults and minors, will definitely turn off some readers, which is valid! I was conflicted on its inclusion the entire way through, but ultimately, I think it ties into the presentation of the Buendía family as being deeply flawed。 Let's face it, Úrsula was probably right about everything all along。I'm sure there are even further layers I'm not fathoming。 I do think that this book fully deserves its status as a classic, and I will absolutely read more Gabriel García Márquez。 。。。more

After reading a few novels I realized that I am not a novel person as such, but this book is something different。 Its a big book, the story spans over 7 generations and it gets a little tedious to remember all the characters at times but the story is gripping so you won't feel like leaving it in the middle。 Its definitely worth reading。 Gabriel Garcia won a Nobel Prize for it in 1982。 Magical realism is a very different but interesting genre。 And the way the author has depicted real life events After reading a few novels I realized that I am not a novel person as such, but this book is something different。 Its a big book, the story spans over 7 generations and it gets a little tedious to remember all the characters at times but the story is gripping so you won't feel like leaving it in the middle。 Its definitely worth reading。 Gabriel Garcia won a Nobel Prize for it in 1982。 Magical realism is a very different but interesting genre。 And the way the author has depicted real life events with stories in the book is really interesting。 And few of the quotes in the books will definitely give you goosebumps。 I really liked to read about the challenges faced by earlier generation and their thought process while inventing new things。 And the end of the book could not be any better。 Quotes from the book --"The world must be all fucked up," he said then, "when men travel first class and literature goes as freight。”It's enough for me to be sure that you and I exist at this moment。He really had been through death, but he had returned because he could not bear the solitude。Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice。。。It is easier to start a war than to end it。 。。。more

Aureliano Buendía hunched over and crafting golden fish reminds me of Dr。 Manette in ATOTC at his work-bench making shoes。 Distracted and obsessive。 There needs to be something to do with one's hands while all this time passes。 There needs to be something to pass all this time。 this book is pretty fire 🔥 Aureliano Buendía hunched over and crafting golden fish reminds me of Dr。 Manette in ATOTC at his work-bench making shoes。 Distracted and obsessive。 There needs to be something to do with one's hands while all this time passes。 There needs to be something to pass all this time。 this book is pretty fire 🔥 。。。more

This was an great book, it took me to a whole another world。 Also, the perfect introduction to genre of "Magic Realism。" I'm eager to explore similar books down the line。 I must say, the only negative was the amount of characters especially with the same name which got extremely confusing at times。 This was an great book, it took me to a whole another world。 Also, the perfect introduction to genre of "Magic Realism。" I'm eager to explore similar books down the line。 I must say, the only negative was the amount of characters especially with the same name which got extremely confusing at times。 。。。more

Beautifully written book with strange imaginations。 The stories of tech of the future bind you in and give you a glimpse of how people might have first reacted to it。 That said, it fails to write a story in the real sense and the ending leaves you wanting more。

A colossal book, standing out like Clarke's monolith in the literary pantheon, thanks to its sheer importance, timelessness and achievement of storytelling with no regards to convention。 A colossal book, standing out like Clarke's monolith in the literary pantheon, thanks to its sheer importance, timelessness and achievement of storytelling with no regards to convention。 。。。more

4。5 is more likely。 Beautifully written and realized story of a multigenerational family and all the weird happenings。 Some of it was so densely packed in that I struggled keeping everyone straight, but that might not be the point。 Literature with a capital L。

This book reminded me why I hated English class in high school。 Another "classic" I just can't understand。 I know it was groundbreaking at the time for introducing a new genre blah blah blah but I don't think it's aging very well。 It had potential at the very beginning to be truly magical but it took a sharp turn for me - weird, disturbing, incest, grown men lusting after 9 year old girls nope nope nope。 Maybe someday I'll give the last 200 pages a go if I really feel like punishing myself。 This book reminded me why I hated English class in high school。 Another "classic" I just can't understand。 I know it was groundbreaking at the time for introducing a new genre blah blah blah but I don't think it's aging very well。 It had potential at the very beginning to be truly magical but it took a sharp turn for me - weird, disturbing, incest, grown men lusting after 9 year old girls nope nope nope。 Maybe someday I'll give the last 200 pages a go if I really feel like punishing myself。 。。。more

I did not make it very far in this book。 I was reading it for a book club which means I will usually read the entire thing even if I hate it, but I couldn't with this。 Like I got as far as a grown man wanting to marry a 9-year-old and couldn't do it anymore。 I did not make it very far in this book。 I was reading it for a book club which means I will usually read the entire thing even if I hate it, but I couldn't with this。 Like I got as far as a grown man wanting to marry a 9-year-old and couldn't do it anymore。 。。。more

“Poets and beggars, musicians and prophets, warriors and scoundrels, all creatures of that unbridled reality, we have had to ask but little of imagination, for our crucial problem has been a lack of conventional means to render our lives believable。 This, my friends, is the crux of our solitude” ( GGM 1982)
