Summary

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life。

When she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself。 Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world。 Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated。 Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career。

Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way。 As Evelyn’s life unfolds—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress。 But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways。

Emma's Things to Read

I cannot believe it took me so long to read this book!It was a fantastic read。Even is such a complex character。 She does some horrible things, is tough and manipulative and yet it is impossible to hate her。Everything she does has a reason。 And often that reason is love。Each one of her seven husbands teaches Evelyn something。 She marries for love, for money, for convenience and for security。 Marriage advances her career, nearly ruins her career and saves it。The novel is so evocative of the golden I cannot believe it took me so long to read this book!It was a fantastic read。Even is such a complex character。 She does some horrible things, is tough and manipulative and yet it is impossible to hate her。Everything she does has a reason。 And often that reason is love。Each one of her seven husbands teaches Evelyn something。 She marries for love, for money, for convenience and for security。 Marriage advances her career, nearly ruins her career and saves it。The novel is so evocative of the golden age of Hollywood where illusion and beauty is valued far greater than honesty and integrity。As the story emerges, the readerfully empathised with journalist, Monique’s feelings towards her subject。 This interview could make her career but she has to make sacrifices for her own success。I loved both of the main characters and the twists at the end as their stories collide and Evelyn’s reasons for requesting Monique become clear。There is so much love in this book。 Love, friendship, ambition, revenge。 This book has it all。A five star read for me 😀 。。。more

3。5 ⭐️I seem to be the odd one out in my views of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo because it was a lot of what I hoped it wouldn’t be。 A majority of the book was unpleasant to read and I thought about quitting multiple times。 The focus on vanity, fame, wealth, and status had me feeling uncomfortable as my values misalign so much with Evelyn’s。 The ending is what made the book worth my time, and I have to say I didn’t see it coming。 Taylor Jenkins Reid is an amazing writer, though, so I may be 3。5 ⭐️I seem to be the odd one out in my views of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo because it was a lot of what I hoped it wouldn’t be。 A majority of the book was unpleasant to read and I thought about quitting multiple times。 The focus on vanity, fame, wealth, and status had me feeling uncomfortable as my values misalign so much with Evelyn’s。 The ending is what made the book worth my time, and I have to say I didn’t see it coming。 Taylor Jenkins Reid is an amazing writer, though, so I may be interested in reading her other books that have more appealing plots。 。。。more

This story was just plain good。 The characters were real。 I was in love and embarrassed and mad and annoyed and joyous at every turn of the page。 I was invested in this book。 Every time I was forced to put it down, couldn’t wait to get back to it。 I carried it with me everywhere and I haven’t done that in a long time!

Very interesting take on love, fame and sexuality。 I listened to the audiobook which I think added a layer of depth being able to hear the narrators voices and relating it to the book。

I have thoroughly enjoyed this and Daisy Jones & the Six。。。I find myself thinking these are some of the most interesting and well written biographies I’ve read, and then remember that they are fiction books。 Unique formats and extremely engaging reads!

brb crying this book was incredibly well written! it is a truly unique novel, there will never be another like it。 the author’s writing style captivated me, and the complex story she writes caused me to think about the complexities of fame, love and life as a whole。 the novel spared no details, and was woven together beautifully to create this wonderful story that i will always love。

I absolutely loved the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - it does not fall short of the hype!! It is one of the best, if not the best, books I have read in my lifetime。 This is my first time reading Taylor Jenkins Reid’s work and I can’t wait to dive in to her other work。I waited quite some time to read/listen to this book and now that I have I wish I would have sooner。 It’s left me to question the impact and effects left by the words and message held within。 This story is so layered and in depth t I absolutely loved the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - it does not fall short of the hype!!

Kylie

Great read。 Loved the style of writing and the story line。

Taylor Jenkins Reid is my new favorite author! I could just reread this and Daisy Jones and the Six for the et of my life and be completely content。

I really enjoyed this book and flew through it。 I loved how it spanned more than half a century and I liked that there was historical context sprinkled here and there。

Marion Biondi

Hi。 This is a perfect book。 Taylor Jenkins Reid is a fucking genius。 That is all。

Ainsley Wortman

I listened to this in audiobook form, which I think might have made it even better。 To hear the story of Evelyn Hugo and be taken through her life, as well as the life of the narrator, and for it to end in the manner that it did 。。。 incredible。 Would definitely recommend it。

。。。more
