Was a bit difficult to read。。。 Made up words。。etc。。 but I wanted to finish it to see if the conflict was resolved。。。 Won't give away the ending though。 Was a bit difficult to read。。。 Made up words。。etc。。 but I wanted to finish it to see if the conflict was resolved。。。 Won't give away the ending though。 。。。more

This is a dark intense tale of the Black Company。 I was impressed at how wonderfully the tales of this group were told。 The writing style is VERY different and took a bit to get into but was totally worth it。 My only qualm at the moment is the lack of description especially when it comes to characters。

I still haven’t figured out if I enjoyed this book or not。 There are some absolutely gorgeous lines of prose speckled throughout, but I felt the plot was easily haywire。 Things were hard to follow and navigate at times。 I could care less about all of the characters。 The magic system is so soft that it becomes a nonsensical sponge cake。 But, it reads very quickly and kind of like a chap book and again *absolutely beautiful prose on some places*。 If there had been a stronger plot and if I cared ab I still haven’t figured out if I enjoyed this book or not。 There are some absolutely gorgeous lines of prose speckled throughout, but I felt the plot was easily haywire。 Things were hard to follow and navigate at times。 I could care less about all of the characters。 The magic system is so soft that it becomes a nonsensical sponge cake。 But, it reads very quickly and kind of like a chap book and again *absolutely beautiful prose on some places*。 If there had been a stronger plot and if I cared about any of the characters? Would have been a wonderful book。 I can say, out of the three included in the compendium, “Shadows Linger” is the only one I could recommend with any faith。 。。。more

Wellll。。。 I wanted to like it real bad! By the time I was at the 3rd book I just lost interest。 didn't even want to sneak ahead and speed read the outcome。 I even put it down, waited 3 days and tried again。 Nope, so sad。 Wellll。。。 I wanted to like it real bad! Great trilogy, really enjoyed the different narrative view of Croaker。 The long term plot is very well constructed and extremely satisfying as you finish the final page。 liked this bnook alot and will read more in the series。

Though it might be a little dry at times, the Chronicles of the Black Company provides a compelling tale of a grand fantasy through the eyes of a hardened company of mercenaries。

Really enjoyed this book。 Will be reading the next omnibus for sure。 The gray morality of the story keeps you guessing on what will happen and with side you should be rooting for。

I liked the business aspect of the mercenaries and the world built here。 There is magic and it is central to some story lines, but it is not the focus。

Excellent trilogy。 The pacing varied greatly from book to book, which was interesting。 Good resolution in the end。 Highly recommend!

Great series, after a while you start to imagine they are real, that you are there sharing drinks with the boys。Not good nor evil the company is the hero。

At the beginning the Black Company is refreshing; both in writing style, story and characters。 It is not often that one sees mercenaries behaving like mercenaries。 But somehow I never got I to the third one (White Rose)。 Somehow the story becomes a bit of a stretch and doesn’t really move forward , and what I enjoyed early one (the banterous dialogue) becomes too much; so I stopped reading about 2/3 through the entire Chronicles。 Tried to restart multiple times, never managed。

First up: The book is actually a collection of the first three books of the Black Company。 Then, I think the quote of Erikson on the back of the book quite hits the mark: it's like reading the report of a guerilla war in the fantasy setting。 I really liked that it was not the usual fantasy book but darker, less "happy endy", less things are explained and hence it's less predictable。 I will definitely read the next ones。 So why only four stars? Boy was it hard to get into the book。 The first 100 First up: The book is actually a collection of the first three books of the Black Company。 Then, I think the quote of Erikson on the back of the book quite hits the mark: it's like reading the report of a guerilla war in the fantasy setting。 I really liked that it was not the usual fantasy book but darker, less "happy endy", less things are explained and hence it's less predictable。 I will definitely read the next ones。 So why only four stars? Oh my, but I struggled to rate this one。 If I had bought only the first book, I would stop there。 I did enjoy their cranky sense of humor and was intrigued by Raven, but in general, I was bored, the main plot did not capture my attention。 I carried on only because I had this omnibus and to my surprise, I really enjoyed the second book。 The first half of the third book was again so slow I almost gave up, but then it picked up and I couldn't put it down until I have finished。 So so tricky to rate。 Oh my, but I struggled to rate this one。 If I had bought only the first book, I would stop there。 I did enjoy their cranky sense of humor and was intrigued by Raven, but in general, I was bored, the main plot did not capture my attention。 I carried on only because I had this omnibus and to my surprise, I really enjoyed the second book。 The first half of the third book was again so slow I almost gave up, but then it picked up and I couldn't put it down until I have finished。 So so tricky to rate。 I'm glad I read this story, but I don't think I will continue my adventure with the Black Company。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book (well, 3 books) is perfect if you have the stomach for dark humor。 Being a reader who enjoys a good narrative, this series is very appealing。 It is written from multiple perspectives, though primarily through the lens of the company physician and historian, Croaker。 If you enjoy books that have sorcery and mercenaries, but also like to see magic from the perspective of the non-magical, you may very well enjoy this series。

One of the best fantasy books I have read in a long time。 Crude, dark, real。Glen Cook's style is one of the best I can remember。 But come prepared for a rough start, confused and trying to make sense of what Glen tells you。 In the same fashion as the protagonists are。Don't start this book expecting some good and evil epic battle。 This is not just a book about fights and magic。This is a not a book of a heroic saviour of the world。 This a book of low rank soldiers simply trying to survive in a hos One of the best fantasy books I have read in a long time。 Crude, dark, real。Glen Cook's style is one of the best I can remember。 But come prepared for a rough start, confused and trying to make sense of what Glen tells you。 In the same fashion as the protagonists are。Don't start this book expecting some good and evil epic battle。 This is not just a book about fights and magic。This is a not a book of a heroic saviour of the world。 This a book of low rank soldiers simply trying to survive in a hostile world they don't understand。Highly recommended。 I'm really looking forward to read the next books in the series。 。。。more

out of the entire series this collected omnibus is solid。 Having the 3 main novels together (The Black Company, Shadows Linger, and The White Rose) makes a complete story and should be essential fantasy reading。 the later books are worth it, but if you have this first collected Omnibus you are set。 Croaker, Silent, Goblin, One-Eye and the rest of the company go through the epic entanglements of the last of the Free Companies of Khatovar as the Dominator attempts to return。 what a great world to out of the entire series this collected omnibus is solid。 Having the 3 main novels together (The Black Company, Shadows Linger, and The White Rose) makes a complete story and should be essential fantasy reading。 the later books are worth it, but if you have this first collected Omnibus you are set。 Croaker, Silent, Goblin, One-Eye and the rest of the company go through the epic entanglements of the last of the Free Companies of Khatovar as the Dominator attempts to return。 what a great world to experience with the talented Glen Cook placing page after page of thought provoking mystery in the beautifully rendered setting。 🖤 。。。more

Another military veteran recommended this to me。 Definitely get why it has a cult following in amongst military。 Cook captures the lower level "boots on the ground" vibe common to soldiering, the various miseries and eccentrics that bond men together in battle - and the lulls。 The fantasy is a fun wrinkle - I'm a LOTR guy and it pretty much stops there。 This has been a pleasant sojourn back into the world of fantasy。 I really liked that the details of the battles and landscape/geography aren't n Another military veteran recommended this to me。 Definitely get why it has a cult following in amongst military。 Cook captures the lower level "boots on the ground" vibe common to soldiering, the various miseries and eccentrics that bond men together in battle - and the lulls。 The fantasy is a fun wrinkle - I'm a LOTR guy and it pretty much stops there。 This has been a pleasant sojourn back into the world of fantasy。 I really liked that the details of the battles and landscape/geography aren't nearly as important as the relationships。 Very humorous book as well, punctuated by many quotable passages that sneak up out of nowhere。 I will say it only fails in that it is a purely masculine perspective。 Our narrator through three books is male and while the book has strong female characters, there is clearly not a woman's touch on the book。 At the end of the three books, a long simmering romance does appear to blossom but it's hardly the focal point of the books。 。。。more

Perhaps the greatest love story in modern fantasy。 My only gripe is that once I finished it I needed more, and felt the lingering haunt of an excellent book。Other reviews will tell about Glen’s style, use of magic, culture building etc。 I simply want to impart to you that the romantic element within the book is so well done it is still haunting me years later。 The Black Company is unique in its genre and beautiful for it。⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Liked everything about this。 My only nitpick was that it was very long and that it have 3 distinct points at which I thought they could have ended the book。Reader, I did not know I was reading books 1 to 3 in 1 book。But if you're into a bit of magic, some knights, some fighting, I liked my time with the Black Company。 Liked everything about this。 My only nitpick was that it was very long and that it have 3 distinct points at which I thought they could have ended the book。Reader, I did not know I was reading books 1 to 3 in 1 book。But if you're into a bit of magic, some knights, some fighting, I liked my time with the Black Company。 。。。more

The Black Company Review:7。8/10This book is written very differently than what I am used to。 There are very little descriptions about anything in this world and it is very to the point on its plot。 Because of this it is quite a fast-paced book with very little explanation or hand holding。 With being the first grim dark book I have read, I wasn’t sure how I would like it and if it was for me but I can definitely say I enjoyed it thoroughly。 While it’s not necessarily explicitly gory or violent, t The Black Company Review:7。8/10This book is written very differently than what I am used to。 There are very little descriptions about anything in this world and it is very to the point on its plot。 Because of this it is quite a fast-paced book with very little explanation or hand holding。 With being the first grim dark book I have read, I wasn’t sure how I would like it and if it was for me but I can definitely say I enjoyed it thoroughly。 While it’s not necessarily explicitly gory or violent, things that are happening are explained to the reader to be much worse than what is written。 This is because the main “author” of this book is actually the doctor of this group who is also in charge of keeping records of the company’s history。 The way that Cook made this work is wonderful and really does a good job of selling the fact that the story is written by just a normal person witnessing incredible things in this book。 I think that this first entry into this series is quite strong and bodes well for the rest of the books。 Shadows Linger Review: 8。6/10This book’s plot unfolded at a much more leisurely pace compared to the first book。 While the first book was still very interesting, it felt like a lot of very important things were happening with not much detail or explanation of each one。 I still enjoyed that, but this book was when the story really started to drag me in。 This entire book is based in one small area of the world and really feels more fleshed out in both character and world building since it doesn’t have to be focused on a multitude of characters traveling across the entire continent。 That doesn’t mean that nothing happens in this book though, on the contrary。 The stakes build and build throughout the entire book and the last third of the book is just one crazy chapter after another。 Unlike other fantasy series that have massive word counts, this series seems to benefit from its shorter but more direct books。 I think that if Cook keeps the quality up, then this will become one of my favorites。 The White Rose Review:8。9/10Being the final entry in The Books of the North, I expected a well written conclusion and that exactly what was given to me。 That doesn’t mean it was a happy ending by any means but rather that I felt things had come to a close。 With the third book under my belt I am beginning to see a pattern arise with Cook’s writing。 He seems to build tension and keep building and building throughout the story until about 75% way through where he has an epic finale。 A lot of character development, world building and smaller battles are waged during the first 75% of the book and honestly this is where his writing seems to shine。 The finales are always action packed and make it impossible to put down but the more relaxed times with the core group of characters is what really grabbed me and really brought the comradery of the Black Company to life。 The times of the Black Company seem to be over and although they played a massive part in the shaping of the current world, their numbers are down to almost nothing。 Where Cook will go with the next 6 books I do not know, but I am excited to see。 The Books of the North Score: 8。5/10 。。。more

According to some quick math I read about 17。5% percent of The Black Company before quitting。I'm okay with giving a book time to get to where it's going, but there needs to be some indication of what's at stake, even if it's obscured, even if it later turns out to not be what's really at stake at all, even if it's small。 You can't wait nearly 20% of the length of a book to put that in。 It's what makes a story a story and not just a series of events。What do any of the characters care about? These first three books were the Lord of the Rings of dark military fantasy。 Glen Cook's magnum opus。 If the next books are anything like these they will not disappoint。 I love it。 My only fear is when the main character inevitably gets too old or suffers some unfortunate end that the story won't be as good。 Here's hoping I am wrong!
