Summary

In 1960, John Steinbeck set out in his pick-up truck with his dog Charley to rediscover and chronicle his native USA, from Maine to California。

He felt that he might have lost touch with its sights, sounds and the essence of the American people。 Moving through the woods and deserts, dirt tracks and highways to large cities and glorious wildernesses, Steinbeck observed - with remarkable honesty, insight and a humorous eye - the gamut of America and the people who inhabited it。

His 10,000-mile journey took him through almost forty states, where he saw things that made him proud, angry, sympathetic and elated。 A rugged and passionate adventure of self-identity, Steinbeck's vision of the changing world still speaks to us prophetically through the decades。

'Delightful。 This is a book to be read slowly for its savor。' The Atlantic

A classic that I think about when I'm on the back roads of any country。 It's all about people and our connections with them。 A classic that I think about when I'm on the back roads of any country。 It's all about people and our connections with them。 。。。more

with some books, you find them to be dragging then you come upon certain passages that just blow you away。 the ending was one of those passages for me。

It was interesting to read John Steinbeck work with such lightweight humour。 A lot of his works are genuinely funny but in a less self reflective sense。 I do prefer his more depressing works but this was a fun, light read and I appreciated to know more about the author himself and he does paint a quaint memoir travelling in Rocinante with his dog。 I also had never heard of the Cheerladies of Detroit movement and it was a particular interesting bit of American History to read about。 Interesting a It was interesting to read John Steinbeck work with such lightweight humour。 A lot of his works are genuinely funny but in a less self reflective sense。 I do prefer his more depressing works but this was a fun, light read and I appreciated to know more about the author himself and he does paint a quaint memoir travelling in Rocinante with his dog。 I also had never heard of the Cheerladies of Detroit movement and it was a particular interesting bit of American History to read about。 Interesting as in, shameful bit of American History。 。。。more

I read the back of this book after buying it for $1 and decided to try it out, having never read any Steinbeck before。 I am so glad I did。 Whether all or parts of this trip was made up or not, in my mind it is nearly perfect。 Steinbeck brings up countless elements and observations concerning the future America from half a century ago that are now in full motion today。 Again and again his description of a certain place, people, or feeling he had spoke deeply to my own thoughts and experiences, in I read the back of this book after buying it for $1 and decided to try it out, having never read any Steinbeck before。 I am so glad I did。 Whether all or parts of this trip was made up or not, in my mind it is nearly perfect。 Steinbeck brings up countless elements and observations concerning the future America from half a century ago that are now in full motion today。 Again and again his description of a certain place, people, or feeling he had spoke deeply to my own thoughts and experiences, including at least a dozen times his own dog。 I loved it。 I found great enjoyment in every page and am sure that as I return to read it again at different times in my life that I'll get more and more out of it。 。。。more

Homeboy and his poodle take a camper truck on a long drive sorta around the perimeter of the US。 He deals with near-retarded border guides at Niagra falls, finds Wisconsin beautiful, falls in love with Montana, realizes he can't return to his home in Salinas and has an eating orgy in Texas for thanksgiving。 The dog gets an inflamed prostate and the whole book becomes a bummer when he witnesses housewives yelling racist shit at a little black girl who is trying to go to a newly integrated school。 Homeboy and his poodle take a camper truck on a long drive sorta around the perimeter of the US。 He deals with near-retarded border guides at Niagra falls, finds Wisconsin beautiful, falls in love with Montana, realizes he can't return to his home in Salinas and has an eating orgy in Texas for thanksgiving。 The dog gets an inflamed prostate and the whole book becomes a bummer when he witnesses housewives yelling racist shit at a little black girl who is trying to go to a newly integrated school。 America has nice spots but it is dying from multiple cancers。 。。。more

I've read road trip books before but this one is really special, if only because of the fine humor and distinctive style of it's author。 A must read for travelers (good or bad observers, probably all of them keep some form of diary) or anyone interested in travelogues。 I've read road trip books before but this one is really special, if only because of the fine humor and distinctive style of it's author。 A must read for travelers (good or bad observers, probably all of them keep some form of diary) or anyone interested in travelogues。 。。。more

What a delightful surprise of a book — a surprise in that I found it on my parents’ bookshelf, which I scavenged when I realized I forgot my kindle on a trip home。 My parents have a full set of Steinbeck’s, including East of Eden and Mice of Men, which I read years back, and Winters of Our Discontent, which didn’t quite fit the mood I’m going for。 So this book was the last remaining option。 Having just gotten a dog myself, I felt drawn to Steinbeck’s memoir of driving across America in a trailer What a delightful surprise of a book — a surprise in that I found it on my parents’ bookshelf, which I scavenged when I realized I forgot my kindle on a trip home。 My parents have a full set of Steinbeck’s, including East of Eden and Mice of Men, which I read years back, and Winters of Our Discontent, which didn’t quite fit the mood I’m going for。 So this book was the last remaining option。 Having just gotten a dog myself, I felt drawn to Steinbeck’s memoir of driving across America in a trailer with his poodle, Charley。 The book seems to have a serious question: what is America? Which spawns more serious questions about roots, race, politics, urbanization, etc。 But the tone, save for a few moments of exquisitely beautiful writing, and a bit of painful experience, was one of lightness with a good helping of dry wit。 I didn’t expect to chuckle so much。 Reading this book, I felt itchy to write in the way great writers make me itch, and also made a list of the states I have yet to visit with renewed vigor to do so。 But most importantly, the book was so fun because it was like taking the trip with Steinbeck and his dog without having to travel at all。 。。。more

Noe s un libro de viajes como tal, es más bien una serie de pensamientos del autor mientras viaja por todo EEUU。 Pero Steinbeck es Steinbeck。

This book covers the usual John Steinbeck themes of man’s search for man and man’s search for America。 While it is not his best work, it is a good representation of his work and it’s consistent high-quality。 All of his usual writer trademarks (vivid description, snappy internal monologue, etc。) are on display here。I would be remiss if I failed to mention that the audiobook version of this book is read wonderfully by the great Gary Sinise。I do not give a tinker’s damn about the debate some people This book covers the usual John Steinbeck themes of man’s search for man and man’s search for America。 While it is not his best work, it is a good representation of his work and it’s consistent high-quality。 All of his usual writer trademarks (vivid description, snappy internal monologue, etc。) are on display here。I would be remiss if I failed to mention that the audiobook version of this book is read wonderfully by the great Gary Sinise。I do not give a tinker’s damn about the debate some people have over whether this book should be listed as fiction or non-fiction; If you enjoy it, enjoy it! John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, set off in 1960 in a pickup camper to see how America had changed since he had begun living in New York City many years before。 This is his travel journal, filled with people and events experienced along the way - some perhaps fictionalized more than a little。 When it was written, it provided a few snapshots of America from Steinbeck's perspective。 Today, it provides us an eyewitness account of the mood of much of America 70 years ago, including at least a John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, set off in 1960 in a pickup camper to see how America had changed since he had begun living in New York City many years before。 This is his travel journal, filled with people and events experienced along the way - some perhaps fictionalized more than a little。 When it was written, it provided a few snapshots of America from Steinbeck's perspective。 Today, it provides us an eyewitness account of the mood of much of America 70 years ago, including at least a few warts。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed this writing from John Steinbeck, even though I was struck by reading about how the veracity of the story was challenged about a decade ago。 While that did make me re-visit some of the passages such as his conversation early in his travels with a farmer on the Nikita Khrushchev 1959 UN Speech, I took the book for what it was as a travelogue of driving cross-country and his introspection in the early 1960s of a period where the United States wrestled with the issue of race。 I I thoroughly enjoyed this writing from John Steinbeck, even though I was struck by reading about how the veracity of the story was challenged about a decade ago。 While that did make me re-visit some of the passages such as his conversation early in his travels with a farmer on the Nikita Khrushchev 1959 UN Speech, I took the book for what it was as a travelogue of driving cross-country and his introspection in the early 1960s of a period where the United States wrestled with the issue of race。 I like the idea of recognizing that as a writer he had become distant from the country he wrote about and felt a need to get reacquainted with it。 I also enjoyed that as a man in his late 50s as the country was going through this period social change in the 1960s that followed the post-war boom, he set out to better understand just what was taking place in the country。 Along those lines, it was fascinating and at times saddening to hear his descriptions such as returning to his hometown of Salinas, CA where he was not all that well received (but knew when it was time for him to depart in order to avoid trouble)。 The late anecdote of seeking to see (and observing) the intense opposition to the integration of an elementary school in New Orleans is an important reminder of pain that comes along with progress。 。。。more

If you have any interest in the American Overlanding phenomenon or if you simply want to read a story about a guy and his truck, with his dog, check this out。 Steinbeck is open and honest and characteristically insightful and poetic about aging, masculinity, consumerism, liquor, and generally traveling America in the 1960s。
