Summary

New York Times Bestseller

No Pain, No Gaines is a by-the-bootstraps manual for building a network of people you can count on。 Fair warning: building it will be painful, but what you’ll gain is something strong, something reliable, and something that can change the world。

Spoiler alert #1: This is a book about networks

Spoiler alert #2: This is not a book about networking

Not networking in the traditional sense anyway。 It’s not about how to leverage your interactions with everyone you meet in an all-out sprint to get ahead。 It’s about how to find a group of real people who will stand beside you as you bust your butt, who believe that authentic human connection is more important than any other earthly thing, and who bet on each other instead of the status quo。 People with beating hearts and passions who live and love and try and fail and try again。 People who lift you up and give your life meaning。

Written for anyone who believes that relationships are more than transactions, and who is looking to build a network of people they can count on, No Pain, No Gaines will coach you on how to

look outside yourself and your circle and foster connections with others
value what you bring to the table
resist the status quo
find the risks worth taking
engage and be awake to life, not asleep at the wheel
get comfortable with being uncomfortably kind
build a network you trust and then trust the network you build
Chip Gaines has been building that kind of network his whole life, and he can tell you, it doesn’t come easy。 The good stuff never does。 It requires faith in people。 It requires hope。 And it requires a willingness to grow even when it hurts。 In No Pain, No Gaines, through hard-won lessons and personal stories, Chip will coach you on how to build a network of your own that will make your life rich and your relationships run deep。

I’ve read all the Gaines’ books with the first Magnolia Story being my favorite。 I wasn’t even going to venture into this one。 I thought the name was a little silly and I didn’t care for his first book, but this was in at my library as an audiobook so I snatched it up。 This book would be great for a young person who was struggling to find themselves。 Think of someone maybe going into the trades! For me, I was past most of the content but did find so much of it refreshing。 I appreciate how Chip talks about his passion to win in life, his strong work ethic, (love who he attributes that to) and was especially endeared to his quest for humility。 I think that’s what most of us loved about Fixer Upper, right? They made something so skilled look so easy。 They are incredibly talented and smart and you throw in that sense of humor and it’s a personality homerun! I appreciate people that are lifelong learners - something Chip is proud to be。 Being a reader, that really resonated with me。 His leadership style is something to be admired, so giving this book to a young leader to read will allow it to be heard in it’s truest voice! Enjoy! 。。。more

I'm a huge fan of Fixer Upper, so I was excited to read this book! It was so much more than what I thought it would be--in a good way。 We've all seen Chip as that goofy, always having fun while working guy on TV--and this book highlights his work ethic, drive and determination in ways that are so inspiring。 He's authentic, honest, and encouraging。 He clearly articulates the value of networking and making real human connections。 There are so many fun stories and anecdotes along the way--even from I'm a huge fan of Fixer Upper, so I was excited to read this book! I was surprised by the impact this book had on me。 I’ve always been a big fan of Chip Gaines so my decision to give the book a try was an easy one。 However, I’ll admit that I was skeptical of the book, thinking it was just another celebrity writing a book because their name alone will lead to sales。 But that was not the case with this book。 On every single page of this book Chip wore his heart on his sleeve and inspired me, encouraged me, and challenged me in profoundly impactful ways。 I’m alway I was surprised by the impact this book had on me。 I’ve always been a big fan of Chip Gaines so my decision to give the book a try was an easy one。 However, I’ll admit that I was skeptical of the book, thinking it was just another celebrity writing a book because their name alone will lead to sales。 But that was not the case with this book。 On every single page of this book Chip wore his heart on his sleeve and inspired me, encouraged me, and challenged me in profoundly impactful ways。 I’m always looking for opportunities to learn from the experience of others, that’s one of the reasons why I love biographies。 While this isn’t a biography, per say, it’s an authentic account of Chip’s approach to living each day to the fullest。 I believe all readers of this book will be thankful they spent a few days with Chip Gaines。 。。。more

Chip narrates this book and talks about building networks。 This isn’t your normal business network or typical self help book。 It is filled with personal stories, anecdotes, analogies, and even guest chapters from both Chip’s and Joanna’s families。 (The family members narrate their own chapters。) NO PAINS NO GAINES is a roadmap on building and surrounding yourself with a network of people that will help you “find and be who you were meant to be”。My Thoughts: Honestly, I’ve watched a few episodes Chip narrates this book and talks about building networks。 This isn’t your normal business network or typical self help book。 It is filled with personal stories, anecdotes, analogies, and even guest chapters from both Chip’s and Joanna’s families。 (The family members narrate their own chapters。) NO PAINS NO GAINES is a roadmap on building and surrounding yourself with a network of people that will help you “find and be who you were meant to be”。My Thoughts: Honestly, I’ve watched a few episodes of Fixer Upper when it was on while I was at the gym and bought a comforter for my daughter at Target but I had no idea the scope of the Gaines’ success。 What I’m so impressed with in this book is that as I listened, I would stop and take notes because I felt like Chip was giving out so much more than a scripted celebrity giving canned advice。Some points that really stuck to me were: the preciousness of time, that we are ALL made out of the same raw materials and that we need to find “radical connectors” not make generic connections。 This book is perfect for everyone! I love Chip and Joanna Gaines (how can you not?), but this book has more well-intentioned enthusiasm than Biblical depth。 It’s part memoir, part pop-psychology motivational speaking。 There’s a lot of “find yourself, be who you were meant to be, follow your passion, be fearless, believe in your power, don’t conform,” etc etc。 Some of it aligns with Biblical truth, and some of it doesn’t。 While not everything has to be explicitly “Christian” to be helpful, the problem with books like this is that I love Chip and Joanna Gaines (how can you not?), but this book has more well-intentioned enthusiasm than Biblical depth。 It’s part memoir, part pop-psychology motivational speaking。 There’s a lot of “find yourself, be who you were meant to be, follow your passion, be fearless, believe in your power, don’t conform,” etc etc。 Some of it aligns with Biblical truth, and some of it doesn’t。 While not everything has to be explicitly “Christian” to be helpful, the problem with books like this is that if you don’t start with the anchor of “God is the one who gets to define who we are and what is best for us,” you run the risk of being tossed everywhere by your own dreams, emotions, biases, and fears。 Chip says “The only one who can help you figure out how to live life according to your terms is you。” That is an incredibly toxic message, because I’m not the one who determines the terms of reality, right, and wrong。 God is! The message of the Bible is not “believe in yourself,” it’s “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding。 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6) I have a feeling the Gaineses agree with this, so it’s sad to see this truth absent from Chip’s latest book。 Even as well-intentioned believers, it’s possible to be deceived by worldly philosophy if we aren’t staying anchored to Christ。 This is my prayer for myself, Chip & Joanna, and for everyone who reads this book:Colossians 2:3-9 (NLT) “In Christ lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge。 I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments。。。And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him。 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him。 Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness。 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ。 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body。” 。。。more

I liked it。 It is not quite what I expected。 I was thinking it would be more about the people in his network and what they do, which was in it, but I thought there would be a lot more of it。 It took me a long time to read。 I would read a chapter or two and then think about things in it and get sidetracked。

One the shows that put HGTV on the map is Fixer Upper starring the husband and wife team of Chip and Joanna Gaines, owners of Magnolia in Waco, Texas。 Chip handles the demolition and remodeling of a house and Joanna does the creative and design of the home。 Chip is known as a goofy, funny, hardworking guy and he shares his philosophy of life and the things he has learned along the way in No Pain, No Gaines。 Not the best student growing up, Chip found more value on hands-on, physical work。 He was One the shows that put HGTV on the map is Fixer Upper starring the husband and wife team of Chip and Joanna Gaines, owners of Magnolia in Waco, Texas。 Chip handles the demolition and remodeling of a house and Joanna does the creative and design of the home。 Chip is known as a goofy, funny, hardworking guy and he shares his philosophy of life and the things he has learned along the way in No Pain, No Gaines。 Not the best student growing up, Chip found more value on hands-on, physical work。 He was a hard worker, a go-getter, even as a child, when he sold snacks at the local public tennis courts。 In college, while others were having a good time, Chip had a lawn mowing business and earning nearly $30,000 annually。 Sales always interested him, and he even had a stint selling books door to door。When it became apparent that his career as a baseball player wasn't going to happen, Chip had to pivot。 He was devastated at getting cut from the Baylor University baseball team, but meeting a guy who lost an eye in high school, and then had an aneurysm that led to brain surgery in college, woke Chip up。Chip learned to "see the life in front of" him。 He began to pay attention to life as it was happening around him, "ready to shift gears whenever necessary。" He also discovered the importance of having a network of people around him, people who will support and cheer you on。 He gives his family- parents and sister, his in-laws- an opportunity to share their insights into and anecdotes about Chip that are so enlightening。According to Chip, one of the most important things in understanding who you are involves making a list of Nonnegotiables, "a list of qualities that are an unwavering part of who you are", your core values。 When your actions don't line up with your nonnegotionables, you become unmoored。Gaines believes in taking chances, and listening to your gut。 He says you also have to be willing to fail; as successful as he and Joanna are with their media empire (a TV network, retail store, restaurant, magazine, decor line at Target, etc。), they came close to declaring bankruptcy at one point。I'm not someone who watched Fixer Upper, but I have to say that I found much to like in No Pain, No Gaines。 I'm also not someone who reads a lot of self-help or business advice books, but much of Gaines' advice and experiences he shares are interesting, useful, and thought-provoking。 It's written in an easy, conversational voice, and if you are a Chip and Joanna Gaines fan, you'll get even more out of this book。 。。。more

Great ideasLooking for information on branching out and exploring new avenues? This is a book for you。 I really enjoyed Capital Gaines and I found this to be an educational "gain"。 Networking is an important part of relationships。 It gave me quite a bit of information to contemplate。 Great ideasLooking for information on branching out and exploring new avenues? This was a quick read and kept me engaged the entire time。 I’m not quite sure what genre to put it in。 It really reads more like a memoir than a “self-help” or business book。 He makes a lot of good points and I agree with his message and the aims of the book but I’d really like to see a book that is a true business book next time from him。
