Summary

The legendary bestseller that made millions look at the world in a radically different way returns in a new edition, now including an exclusive discussion between the authors and bestselling professor of psychology Angela Duckworth。

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? Which should be feared more: snakes or french fries? Why do sumo wrestlers cheat? In this groundbreaking book, leading economist Steven Levitt—Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago and winner of the American Economic Association’s John Bates Clark medal for the economist under 40 who has made the greatest contribution to the discipline—reveals that the answers。 Joined by acclaimed author and podcast host Stephen J。 Dubner, Levitt presents a brilliant—and brilliantly entertaining—account of how incentives of the most hidden sort drive behavior in ways that turn conventional wisdom on its head。

A classic。 One of my all time favorite books。

I read so many reviews about this book saying it would be like a mindset changing。。。 we read it on our economics book club and it is basically a personal opinion book, does not even bring clear details to which researchers and database they are referring to。 It is not bad reading, fast to go, but I felt like I read a bunch of information in a superficial point of view, when they could have just chose some main topics to introduce economics to lay people。

Super fascinating!! I’ve been chewing on the story of Romania and gang organization for a few days now。

Great insight on certain things and overall enjoyed reading the perspective。

very VERY interesting read。 i learned about legalizing abortion and it’s correlation to a decline in crime rates。 i learned about how we view risk factors and the idea of a pool being more dangerous than a gun。 i learned about systematic racism and it’s role in economics and even how people name their children。 i hated that i was too busy writing hundreds of notes during my read to really enjoy it to it’s full extent but it was very informative and educational。

right up my ally。。。 proposing a question regardless of it's social or moral absurdity。。 even when it sometimes could get you no where。。 is something i appreciate and try to practice often without even realizing it! Plus it showed me the fun side of economics。 right up my ally。。。 proposing a question regardless of it's social or moral absurdity。。 even when it sometimes could get you no where。。 is something i appreciate and try to practice often without even realizing it! Based on the reviews, it seems this book made many people very mad。 Based on the ratings, it seems like the rest of its readers thought it was great。 I, myself, was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this, though it really wasn't what I imagined it to be。 It seems more about sociology than economics in many chapters。 Regardless, it was interesting, much credit due to the writing。 It's very approachable, and doesn't go very deep into any particular subject, which is disappointing in some section Based on the reviews, it seems this book made many people very mad。 Based on the ratings, it seems like the rest of its readers thought it was great。 I, myself, was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this, though it really wasn't what I imagined it to be。 It seems more about sociology than economics in many chapters。 Regardless, it was interesting, much credit due to the writing。 It's very approachable, and doesn't go very deep into any particular subject, which is disappointing in some sections。 I would have loved to read a whole book about gangs in Chicago through this lens, or reducing crime via abortion and increased imprisonment, instead of popular names。 Would recommend to everyone and anyone who's mildly curious。 Read it in a day, but maybe that's because the deadline is。。。 tomorrow morning。 。。。more

[My first audiobook ever!] This book had some fun eyebrow-raising facts throughout it。 The most compelling for me was the opening chapter regarding the 1990s crime drop。 It wasn’t, in fact, a strong economy or increased police officers that caused the drop。 It was the impact of Roe v Wade 20 years or so earlier。 There were simply less criminals being born, and the time they’d start becoming criminals found itself with less of a candidate pool。 That’s what made this book special, the use of cases [My first audiobook ever!] This book had some fun eyebrow-raising facts throughout it。 The most compelling for me was the opening chapter regarding the 1990s crime drop。 It wasn’t, in fact, a strong economy or increased police officers that caused the drop。 It was the impact of Roe v Wade 20 years or so earlier。 There were simply less criminals being born, and the time they’d start becoming criminals found itself with less of a candidate pool。 That’s what made this book special, the use of cases like this to encourage open mindedness and thinking of solutions less short-term and more long-term。 The book did get a little dry for me after the Crack chapter。 The business world of crack cocaine was absolutely fascinating, but afterwards the book did get repetitive。 The authors seemed most focused on crime - I could’ve used more variation in topics to show how we can apply this thinking in even more situations。 To be fair, they certainly did share other topics, but crime made up about 60+%。Overall, a good read (listen)。 I’d recommend for a long car ride with someone you can discuss deep societal and psychological topics with。 。。。more

Freakonomics distills the curious thinking that is essential for anyone in any form of academia into a few neat chapters and does it very well。 However, I gave it 4/5 stars because of how it was delivered (I really wanted to want to give it 5)。 Although each chapter was fascinating and could stand alone as a single scientific article (as most are anyway), I couldn't help but shake the feeling that the titles and content were just a bit *too* interesting to be wholly true。 In the chapter "Where h Freakonomics distills the curious thinking that is essential for anyone in any form of academia into a few neat chapters and does it very well。 However, I gave it 4/5 stars because of how it was delivered (I really wanted to want to give it 5)。 Although each chapter was fascinating and could stand alone as a single scientific article (as most are anyway), I couldn't help but shake the feeling that the titles and content were just a bit *too* interesting to be wholly true。 In the chapter "Where have all the criminals gone?" they outline a direct cause and effect relationship between the lack of abortions carried out after the ruling of Roe V Wade in the US with the sudden drop in crime roughly 18 years later。 They frame it, similarly to the rest of the book, as fact, and somehow fail to mention that there is seriously intense debate on the abortion-crime link discussed in the chapter。Dont get me wrong, this book is a definite page turner and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get a feel for the instincts required in acedemia。 I just think it's written from more of a light hearted angle than you initially expect。 。。。more

Usually when I pick a non self-help nonfiction book, I don't read it for the facts as much as I do for picking up some BTS of the author's thought processes。What this book leaves you with is that you should carefully process data before assigning causality for any problem in question。 And it gives you a handful of interesting conundrums as examples。 While I was left with a nod of approval and a thumbs up at each conclusion the author arrives at, he fails to teach us how to ask the right question Usually when I pick a non self-help nonfiction book, I don't read it for the facts as much as I do for picking up some BTS of the author's thought processes。What this book leaves you with is that you should carefully process data before assigning causality for any problem in question。 And it gives you a handful of interesting conundrums as examples。 While I was left with a nod of approval and a thumbs up at each conclusion the author arrives at, he fails to teach us how to ask the right questions ourselves。 Nor does he donate the eyes of an economist that'll help us sieve through any available data and solve such problems on our own。Well written。 Could lose some of its belly fat that is the repeating content。Freako-correlation-causation : A self-aggrandizing economist explores the hidden reasons behind a few things。 - Smooth and engaging, but far from enlightening。PS: I'm going to be extra careful with real estate agents henceforth。 。。。more

Read this over a decade ago and re-read it again this year。 There are things you learn from business school and things you learn when you question correlation vs causality。Still rings of relevance and the need for people to question everything。 Economics as a science is fascinating, because it allows you to catch the signal and the noise。 And if this pandemic has not gotten you into finding truth in the data and statistics, please read this book。

Would've given it a 3。5/5, I expected it to be "freaky" as the title suggests and it was actually quite boring for my liking, I would have given it a 2/5 if it wasn't for the bonus material at the end of the book which were definitely good, but nonetheless I took some good ideas from the book。 Would've given it a 3。5/5, I expected it to be "freaky" as the title suggests and it was actually quite boring for my liking, I would have given it a 2/5 if it wasn't for the bonus material at the end of the book which were definitely good, but nonetheless I took some good ideas from the book。 。。。more

It was a good book but not as good as I thought about it。 It changes my mind about some issues like parenting and, so I feel I need to think more clearly about it。 AS writer told, the book is about everything and it has not a single specific subject。 I recommend it to my friends but it is not necessary to have it in your shelf book :)

How can the preface of this book so explicitly define the correlation/causation error and then fall victim to it? Not to mention there is no resolution to it, no connection gathered after all of these anecdotes are thrown at you。 There's nothing revolutionary or "rogue" to this, it's just psychology and a 320-page needless reminder that the economy isn't a thing that should exist。 How can the preface of this book so explicitly define the correlation/causation error and then fall victim to it? I'm sure it's trendy to denigrate this book as pop science, pop economics, etc。 but it was deeply thought provoking to me when I read it and it has earned all the success it has gained, launching a small empire of counter-intuitive and objective looks at our world。 I'm sure it's trendy to denigrate this book as pop science, pop economics, etc。 but it was deeply thought provoking to me when I read it and it has earned all the success it has gained, launching a small empire of counter-intuitive and objective looks at our world。 。。。more
