Summary

NINE YEARS

It is almost a decade since Duluth said goodbye to its innocence。 The city creeps ever closer to the tenth anniversary of the year in which it found itself both gripped by murder and united in terror; and during which the pillar of its community, DS Jonathan Stride, had his home and heart torn to ribbons by the claws of cancer。

NINE LIVES

Cat Mateo, an orphan with a knack of landing on her feet, has bid farewell to a life on the streets。 This once-stray teenager owes her rescue to Detective Stride, the father figure she holds close to her heart。 But Cat holds something else to her chest - a secret: the sheer power of which she could not possibly comprehend。

A secret that, once out of the bag, will not just viciously scratch at Duluth's still-healing wounds, but will make DS Jonathan Stride wave goodbye to his convictions about the events nine years before, and say hello to his darkest fears。

It's been fun watching Freeman's plot lines and writing develop in the series。 This was a great read。 Starting to feel more attached to the characters, twisty plot with multiple avenues - really good read。 It's been fun watching Freeman's plot lines and writing develop in the series。 This was a great read。 Starting to feel more attached to the characters, twisty plot with multiple avenues - really good read。 。。。more

I am continuing to enjoy this series on audible。 Each story is easily read as a stand alone but they do talk about characters from earlier ones in the series。 The mystery is it's own story and if it does have ties to the past, the author ties everything together well。 The narrator on the audio version has been consistent and does a great job。 I am continuing to enjoy this series on audible。 Each story is easily read as a stand alone but they do talk about characters from earlier ones in the series。 The mystery is it's own story and if it does have ties to the past, the author ties everything together well。 The narrator on the audio version has been consistent and does a great job。 。。。more

Good read!Good story。 Very good twist - unexpected for sure。 Took some time for the story to build bout once it took off, it was good!

Clever storytelling with two mysteries intertwined。 I thought the story was over about four times in the last 50 pages。 Just when I thought it was done, another surprise shocked me。 I hope the saga of Cat, Al, and baby will continue in subsequent novels。

I don't take giving a book 5 stars lightly。 I have enjoyed the Jonathan Stride series very much but this book had so many great things going for it, I couldn't not give it 5。 Brian has a great knack for moving a story and weaving details in out so effortlessly, he truly is a joy to read。 I don't take giving a book 5 stars lightly。 I have enjoyed the Jonathan Stride series very much but this book had so many great things going for it, I couldn't not give it 5。 Brian has a great knack for moving a story and weaving details in out so effortlessly, he truly is a joy to read。 。。。more

Much better than the previous book in the series。 I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending, but it did make sense and tied everything together。

Dr。 Janine Snow is serving a prison sentence for murdering her husband。 A safe conviction according to the available evidence。 The police believe her to be guilty but Howard Marlowe, who has developed an all-consuming obsession with Janine, thinks otherwise。 Detective Jonathan Stride has always been convinced of her guilt, but new evidence seems to cast doubt on the case 。 The suspense builds up beautifully throughout the book, leaving the reader wondering until the final chapters。

A husband is murdered and the surgeon wife is suspect。 Girls are being sold into slavery and a shocking surprise is who is helping these evil men。

Another good Jonathan Stride story。 The story opens with the murder of the husband of woman doctor who is a renowned heart surgeon。 The marriage is tumultuous and the doctor is the prime suspect。 She happens to be the good friend of Stride’s wife, Cindy who believes in her innocence。 The murder weapon is never found along with some jewelry that was stolen。 The doctor was convicted of murder and sent to prison。 Nine years later, the gun used in the murder is recovered after being used in another Another good Jonathan Stride story。 The story opens with the murder of the husband of woman doctor who is a renowned heart surgeon。 The marriage is tumultuous and the doctor is the prime suspect。 She happens to be the good friend of Stride’s wife, Cindy who believes in her innocence。 The murder weapon is never found along with some jewelry that was stolen。 The doctor was convicted of murder and sent to prison。 Nine years later, the gun used in the murder is recovered after being used in another murder, this time of a young woman。 These new developments lead to a sex slave ring operating out of Duluth。 As is always the case the plot is involved and has many twists and surprises before the end。 One of the strengths of this series is the character development and this book continues that trend。 。。。more

Mostly a good novel featuring Stride and Duluth。 The downside was the end of the novel when the two primary murders are solved。 The plot falls deeply into the cold water of Lake Superior in what seems like a too far from shore solution。 Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable crime novel with a disappointing end。

Brian Freeman nunca defrauda, gran libro y entretenido, que nos permite concocer un poco mas del pasado de la vida de Stride

Boy these Jonathan Stride detective mysteries just keep getting better! I think this may be my favorite because Cindy and Serena both appear, so past and present converge。 I really liked getting to know Cindy and saw why Jonathan fell in love and never fell out of love with her (his devastating loss when she dies) and her pursuit of that forest camo guy who shoots trees。。。and his threat to her when she spots him and pursues him。 The mystery in the book was also rooted in the past and the present Boy these Jonathan Stride detective mysteries just keep getting better! I have the next book in the series on my kindle already, but I amgoing to hate when there are no more Jonathan, Maggie and Serena murder mysteries! 。。。more

A good solid read as always with this author。 I did find the jump in time frame a little disorienting though。

I'm not a mass market thriller/mystery reader。 But I picked this up because I live in Duluth, and I guess I should read one of these Stride novels。 Okay。 It was pretty good。 But as a Duluthian for over 25 yrs, it's obvious the man's never lived here。 Yeah, I know: nitpicky local has issues。 It's true though, the oh-so-minor tells are irritating。 (Ex: it's "Enger Tower," not "The Enger Tower。" And it's never humid in January。 And it's also pastel at that time, not grey。) I'm not a mass market thriller/mystery reader。 But I picked this up because I live in Duluth, and I guess I should read one of these Stride novels。 Okay。 It was pretty good。 But as a Duluthian for over 25 yrs, it's obvious the man's never lived here。 Yeah, I know: nitpicky local has issues。 It's true though, the oh-so-minor tells are irritating。 (Ex: it's "Enger Tower," not "The Enger Tower。" And it's never humid in January。 And it's also pastel at that time, not grey。) 。。。more

Freeman and racist police officersI began my review of the last entry in the Stride series, book 6 with a note/warning about racism and I’m sorry to say this is the second Stride book in a row where the issue of police racism has come up。 Note that protests are currently occurring in both Minneapolis and Louisville tonight, as well as in other cities throughout our nation。 Also note that the President of the United States tweeted a warning to protesters, stating when the “looting starts, the sho Freeman and racist police officersI began my review of the last entry in the Stride series, book 6 with a note/warning about racism and I’m sorry to say this is the second Stride book in a row where the issue of police racism has come up。 Note that protests are currently occurring in both Minneapolis and Louisville tonight, as well as in other cities throughout our nation。 Also note that the President of the United States tweeted a warning to protesters, stating when the “looting starts, the shooting starts。” And, finally, last night the Minnesota State Police arrested a CNN reporter and his crew while they were in the midst of reporting on the rioting in Minneapolis。 The reporter was a POC。 All four men arrested offered proof of identification and press passes。 They were released from jail when the Governor stepped in。 This is the state of America on May 29, 2020。 In the last Stride book a Minneapolis police officer speaking to a police officer from another jurisdiction said that Minneapolis was tough because minorities and wacko lefties hate the police (and, yes, SPOILER, I get that the police officer who said those words ended up not being the greatest guy, but his downfall had nothing to do with his remarks。) This time around, within the first thirty or so pages of the book is is our protagonist, Stride himself making apologies for one of his officers who used “ugly racial epithets” during a traffic stop。 Stride’s solution was a suspension and diversity training for the officer。 A local newspaper columnist pushed the issue and political pressure from higher ups made Stride Fire the officer, which Stride was loathe to do, since one “mistake” did not, in his mind “justify taking a young man’s entire career。” Two books in a row where two white officers have real problems with minorities? One of them supposedly our hero? Mr。 Freeman, I fear your true stripes are bleeding through, a bit, and, since you seem to be color oriented, I can tell you I don’t like their color。 Those stripes lead to the murder in Minneapolis, the murder in Georgia (at the hands of a retired police officer and his son), the situation in Central Park。 These are not just individual bad actors, this is the evil, systemic racism which makes black men afraid for their very lives every day。 I had already noted another Stride book where I saw what I felt to be body shaming and slut shaming behavior, but was willing to set that aside, with the hope that as you grew as a writer you would also grow as a person。 Having your main character be so indifferent to the potential dangers of a racist police officer, and seeing it happen twice is two times too many。 I won’t be reading the rest of this book or any others written by you, which is unfortunate, because I’ve enjoyed them。 But I will not support showing racism by law enforcement as anything other than the heinous slippery slope it is。 Perhaps a cop who feels like Stride becomes the next Derek Chauvin? Because there are hundreds, if not thousands of them on police forces all over the country。 We’ve been here before。 I won’t be any sort of party to being here again。 。。。more

I took out a point just for one thing I hate the most: killing animals。 There was a scene with a dead animal。 Everything else was great, especially Cindy’s part of the story。 Now we all know her a little bit。 Oh, yeah, forgot to mention that before I started reading this one I was thinking about “Immoral” and how I miss all-in-one action: investigation, court, before, after, the truth。 And I got it all with this story。 Thank you!

First, I want to say how much I adore Brian Freeman’s writing style。 Transitions between characters are seamless and I am never disappointed to return to another characters storyline, each was equally engaging。 There were just enough characters for me to keep track of, not feeling like I had to constantly refresh my memory regarding who was who。 As someone who doesn’t read this series in order, I appreciate that’s very little is given away regarding other books in the series。 He began to lose me First, I want to say how much I adore Brian Freeman’s writing style。 Transitions between characters are seamless and I am never disappointed to return to another characters storyline, each was equally engaging。 There were just enough characters for me to keep track of, not feeling like I had to constantly refresh my memory regarding who was who。 As someone who doesn’t read this series in order, I appreciate that’s very little is given away regarding other books in the series。 He began to lose me a bit when the timeline jumped back to “now”。 It started to feel a little disconnect, slow, and I began to lose interest as I was mainly interested in dr。snows story, however knew it would all come together so of course I stuck it out。 I wish we learned more about Ross and Jessie, that just felt like a filler dead end that didn’t end up being relevant to the big picture。 I assumed we would find out there was something incestuous going on, or be given some reasoning behind Ross’s delusions, so that was my biggest issue with the story, felt like a loose end。 Overall I appreciated the ending, however was a bit less shocked then I have been with previous books from this series。 I wish the book was a tad shorter, as I began to lose interest at times。 I also wish the reveal for Dr。 Snows story hit a bit closer to home, but was satisfied with the conclusion。 4。25 is just about the perfect rating 。。。more

A typical Jonathan Stride crime story。 Did the eminent surgeon kill her husband as the hero believes or is his wife correct in rejecting the possibility 。 What do the jury find。 Is there a connection to the trafficking of kidnapped young women or is that too far fetched The author's books always have additional appeal because they are set in Duluth , a city my brother emigrated to from Scotland many years ago - and it sounds very similar。 A perfectly enjoyable read 。 A typical Jonathan Stride crime story。 Did the eminent surgeon kill her husband as the hero believes or is his wife correct in rejecting the possibility 。 What do the jury find。 Is there a connection to the trafficking of kidnapped young women or is that too far fetched The author's books always have additional appeal because they are set in Duluth , a city my brother emigrated to from Scotland many years ago - and it sounds very similar。 A perfectly enjoyable read 。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up。 No detail is too small to matter, when it comes to the story。 This book is in the present and in flash back。 But- in an effort to make the book stand alone, the author rehashes histories from previous books。 It’s getting really annoying, and weighs the book down。 Also- the teen character needs major quality psychological help。 If she had a tooth problem, they’d definitely take her to a dentist。 Why not a psychologist?
