Summary

A brilliant new crime novel from the beloved, bestselling, and award-winning master of the genre--and Joe Pike's most perilous case to date。

Joe Pike didn't expect to rescue a woman that day。 He went to the bank same as anyone goes to the bank, and returned to his Jeep。 So when Isabel Roland, the lonely young teller who helped him, steps out of the bank on her way to lunch, Joe is on hand when two men abduct her。 Joe chases them down, and the two men are arrested。 But instead of putting the drama to rest, the arrests are only the beginning of the trouble for Joe and Izzy。

After posting bail, the two abductors are murdered and Izzy disappears。 Pike calls on his friend, Elvis Cole, to help learn the truth。 What Elvis uncoveres is a twisted family story that involves corporate whistleblowing, huge amounts of cash, the Witness Relocation Program, and a long line of lies。 But what of all that did Izzy know? Is she a perpetrator or a victim? And how far will Joe go to find out?

I give it a marginal 4 stars。 It's a fun, exciting read, but it's a pretty standard plot with a pretty standard ending。 A fun distraction。 I give it a marginal 4 stars。 It's a fun, exciting read, but it's a pretty standard plot with a pretty standard ending。 A fun distraction。 。。。more

Another transparent non-suspenseful romance/crime story。 Pike thinks about her, "Little Miss Isabel。" She thinks, "He was tall and dark, with ropey arms, a strong neck, and lean cheeks。" I can guess where this one is headed but I don't want to give away any spoilers。 Next book! one star taken for some really dumb characters in the story。。。a nice thriller。

Perhaps the best buddy mysteries since Robert Parker, Crais' Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are just short of flawed superheroes。 A Dangerous Man is one of his fastest moving stories。 As always, crisp dialogue and a compact, vivid description of L。A。 Perhaps the best buddy mysteries since Robert Parker, Crais' Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are just short of flawed superheroes。 A Dangerous Man is one of his fastest moving stories。 As always, crisp dialogue and a compact, vivid description of L。A。 。。。more

Really dug this latest Pike novel。 Cole is definitely in auxiliary mode here。 Been awhile since I'd read any Crais, and it's so good to have him back。 I really appreciate how Crais has flushed out Pike's character。 After this book, it struck me that I was glad it was Pike that was the main character this go around。 And that Crais stays real to Pike throughout。 Arrows forward always。 This time Pike and Cole help out a young woman who has been kidnapped in front of Pike。 Always great to see him ki Really dug this latest Pike novel。 Cole is definitely in auxiliary mode here。 Been awhile since I'd read any Crais, and it's so good to have him back。 I really appreciate how Crais has flushed out Pike's character。 After this book, it struck me that I was glad it was Pike that was the main character this go around。 And that Crais stays real to Pike throughout。 Arrows forward always。 This time Pike and Cole help out a young woman who has been kidnapped in front of Pike。 Always great to see him kick ass。 The story about the leopard is particularly awesome and really informative about the kind of guy he is。 Lots of action。 Nothing too gruesome this time, which is appreciated。 Surely this has been/will be developed for a streaming series。 。。。more

Good, quick read。 First time reading about these characters。 Definitely piqued my interest into their respective series。

I love Crais’s writing and these characters; but, for some unidentifiable reason, this novel didn’t fully engross me like the others in the series have。

Mike Harper

Typical Cole/Pike novel。 Plenty of action, nothing too challenging for the reader。

William Campbell

After all these stories, I still like Joe and Elvis。

I got this book at the Library book fair。 The story was decent; however, it failed to keep me entertained throughout its entirety。

Pike rescues helpless, non too bright damsel in distress。 Not much going for this one but the writing at least is not terrible。

Pike is a supporting character。 Cole is a much better lead。 He's funny and warm and a people person。 I'm glad Pike didn't hook up with a 22 year old woman who acted like a teenager。 Isn't he 60?Carly was called Isabel's girlfriend。 Why are only female friends referred to that way? Male platonic friendships are not called boyfriends。 Is this an archaic way of referring to secondary relationships that are subordinate to one a woman has with "her man"? Not to pick on Crais--i just noticed and brist Pike is a supporting character。 Cole is a much better lead。 He's funny and warm and a people person。 I'm glad Pike didn't hook up with a 22 year old woman who acted like a teenager。 Isn't he 60?Carly was called Isabel's girlfriend。 Why are only female friends referred to that way? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ok- so maybe Elvis and Pike are my new obsession! I love Jack Reacher and Pike is similar。。。ex military, calm, scary with some Elvis thrown in。 Elvis is the one with social skills。 They are both good guys, even though so many people get killed along the way。 I love their persistence。 They didn’t just wipe out the foot soldiers, they wiped out the head dude。 As with Jack, it all started with a random meeting— this time at the bank。

Robert Crais always bring entertainment with street justice as a solution to society evils。 Joe Pike gets it done。 When something is wrong 。。。 Pike makes it right。 The last scene 。。。 Beautiful。

Jean Potter

Another great Pike and Elvis Cole story

This series has been going since the late 80s。 It's no surprise that Crais has the rhythm of these books down cold。 I appreciate that in that time he's expanded Elvis and Joe's universe to include characters from spin-off books (and vice-versa) as surely Crais wanted to keep the stories - and his enthusiasm for writing them - fresh and vibrant。 But this latest installment feels written straight from a fill-in-the-blanks template。 Crais checks all the boxes when it comes to Elvis and Joe。 You'll This series has been going since the late 80s。 It's no surprise that Crais has the rhythm of these books down cold。 I appreciate that in that time he's expanded Elvis and Joe's universe to include characters from spin-off books (and vice-versa) as surely Crais wanted to keep the stories - and his enthusiasm for writing them - fresh and vibrant。 But this latest installment feels written straight from a fill-in-the-blanks template。 Crais checks all the boxes when it comes to Elvis and Joe。 You'll get the Greatest Hits tour: A-frame and cranky cat/spartan apartment; yellow Corvette (dirty)/red Cherokee Jeep (immaculate); Hawaiian shirt/sleeveless grey sweatshirt and sunglasses (always on, especially if its dark); quips/silence。 The plot is just another variation of Bad Guys Doing Bad Things to Someone。 Their names, motivations, and backstories are of no relevance or interest with respect to the reader's involvement with or enjoyment of the book。 They'll be gone by the end only to pop up again in the next book, just with different names。 I mean, an hour after finishing the book I was hard-pressed to remember the name of the Someone (a twenty-something bank clerk) who started it all off。 I certainly didn't bother remembering any of the Bad Guys。 In fact, I skimmed a lot of those scenes and chapters because what was the point? It was all just noise, a group of hired guns tracking down this girl。 As for Elvis and Joe, they mostly just move around L。A。 as needed to find clues and solve the crime。 If I think of this book again it'll be "the one where the girl who works at a bank is kidnapped。" That I think of it in terms of what the crime was instead of what Elvis and/or Joe did tells you something。I miss books where some part of Elvis and/or Joe was truly tested and affected, where I thought they had some deeply personal stake in what was going on and that I got to the last page feeling like they had been changed by what they went through。 There was one small moment (view spoiler)[ when Joe, in a tense stand-off situation going pear-shaped very quickly, kills a Bad Guy about to shoot Elvis。 When the dust settles a few moments later, he and Elvis just hug each other, very tightly, an emotional moment made all the more so because nothing needs to be said between the two of them。 It's a simple gesture but speaks volumes about their relationship。 It also highlights the vulnerability both of them felt throughout the encounter and shows them being affected by the high tension of what was happening。 (hide spoiler)]I mean, I could go on but that's the point, isn't it? That such a seemingly small thing can say so much about the characters。 It's the quality of writing that pulls you deep into the story itself and is what's going to stick with you as a reader, what's going to make you want to come back to the next book。I still think back to the storyline that featured Elvis in Louisiana and meeting Lucy and Ben Chenier, and the emotional roller coaster they endured through the course of that whole thing。 Even Joe was caught up in it。 Elvis has her picture up on his fridge still, and maintains a relationship with Ben, to whom he considers himself a father-figure (feelings which Ben reciprocates)。 That's the level of emotional story-telling the series needs to get back to, not just spin the wheel for the next round of bad guys and victim(s)。 So sure, while it was nostalgic to tool around L。A。 with Elvis and Joe, then do some catching-up back at the A-frame with some beer and steaks, I can't say this particular visit was memorable。 。。。more

Unlike most of the other books I have read in this series, this one is centered on Joe Pike and Elvis Cole is just a sidekick。 Joe Pike reminds me a lot of Jack Reacher, which is one reason I really like this series。 A former Special Forces soldier, former policemen, current Jack-of-all-trades, Pike has a clearly defined sense of right and wrong and will go to great lengths to make the right triumph and the wrong pay。After doing business at his bank, Pike sees and attempted kidnap of the teller Unlike most of the other books I have read in this series, this one is centered on Joe Pike and Elvis Cole is just a sidekick。 Joe Pike reminds me a lot of Jack Reacher, which is one reason I really like this series。 A former Special Forces soldier, former policemen, current Jack-of-all-trades, Pike has a clearly defined sense of right and wrong and will go to great lengths to make the right triumph and the wrong pay。After doing business at his bank, Pike sees and attempted kidnap of the teller who has just helped him。 It is "attempted" because he interferes and saves the girl, knocking both perpetrators unconscious。 Isabel Roland has no idea why anyone would want to kidnap her, but they keep trying to get her, and in fact, do get her TWICE。 But Joe Pike has taken an interest in this girl and comes to her rescue time and again。 The story has some surprises (US Marshals are interested in witness protection gone wrong, a retired Marshal is tortured and murdered), and it is fast-paced and entertaining。 So much so, that i read it in two days!! 。。。more
