Good intro for the series。 Left me full of questions for what happens in the later volumes。

From what I've seen so far this is not my favorite。 I'm sure that in the next couple of volumes we'll get to know more about this world, the brand, and the members of the Godhand。 Griffith had a cool entrance, I liked that part a lot。 I hope we get more of the five members in the next volumes because it gets boring with just these two constantly fighting, and the dialogue between them let's say it's not that good。 Vargas was a refresher but he left very quickly。 The demon uuugh。。。that thing was From what I've seen so far this is not my favorite。 I'm sure that in the next couple of volumes we'll get to know more about this world, the brand, and the members of the Godhand。 Griffith had a cool entrance, I liked that part a lot。 I hope we get more of the five members in the next volumes because it gets boring with just these two constantly fighting, and the dialogue between them let's say it's not that good。 Vargas was a refresher but he left very quickly。 The demon uuugh。。。that thing was disgusting, I want to unseen that。 I'm intrigued and I'll read the next deluxe edition and after that, I'll decide if I'll continue or not。 。。。more

While the anime didn‘t fascinate me that much (yet, I‘m only about halfway in), this Deluxe edition collecting the first nine original volumes of Miura‘s Berserk merits five stars in my opinion。 It’s crass, brutal, gory, bloody yet somehow manages to deliver scenes with a level of depth in terms of philosophy that can make you stop turning over the pages and think。 It‘s up to everyone to decide if a few hours of turning black-and-white pages is worth over 40 bucks to you, but to me it was! I absolutely love Berserk, as I have seen the anime series and movies。 I think this is an unpopular opinion, but I didn’t love the Omnibus as much as I did for other series。 Saiyuki’s Resurrected Editions are my favorite。 For this one, it’s a bit too large, so it’s awkward to hold。 But, I knew that going in, so it’s not part of the review。 My main issue is the way it smells。 I am addicted to the smell of books, but this one has a pretty horrible aroma to it。 It’s very strong and smells nothing l I absolutely love Berserk, as I have seen the anime series and movies。 I think this is an unpopular opinion, but I didn’t love the Omnibus as much as I did for other series。 Saiyuki’s Resurrected Editions are my favorite。 For this one, it’s a bit too large, so it’s awkward to hold。 But, I knew that going in, so it’s not part of the review。 My main issue is the way it smells。 I am addicted to the smell of books, but this one has a pretty horrible aroma to it。 It’s very strong and smells nothing like other manga。 Maybe the ink used? Secondly, there are pixels in a lot of the images that are distracting for me。 Maybe all manga have these pixels, but since this is so large, they stand out more? It’s hard to describe。 The images were really busy, so the pixels make it worse。 Finally, I’m not crazy about the feel of it。 It almost feels like it has a residue on it, as opposed to really high quality leather。 I much prefer glossy hardbacks or ones that have a smooth matte feel。 I haven’t read past this first omnibus, and I plan to definitely finish the manga series, however compared to other manga, this one is not at the top of my list at the current moment。 That could change。 The decision now is whether or not I continue with the omnibus editions or buy the paperback。 。。。more

A dark and visceral journey of sadistic and masochistic enlightenment。 It’s quite possible you may not have the “GUTS” to make it through this read。 The imagery is full of imaginative pain, horror, and death, which can make one think just how far hate will drive a man beyond his limitation。 This tome is certainly one for the collections, especially for those familiar with the Berserk series。 Over large printed pages allows the generous artwork to stand out and crush your ribs into dust。 Cringe w A dark and visceral journey of sadistic and masochistic enlightenment。 It’s quite possible you may not have the “GUTS” to make it through this read。 The imagery is full of imaginative pain, horror, and death, which can make one think just how far hate will drive a man beyond his limitation。 This tome is certainly one for the collections, especially for those familiar with the Berserk series。 Over large printed pages allows the generous artwork to stand out and crush your ribs into dust。 Cringe with every turn of the page。 It is no wonder why this beloved manga has become a standard horror classic。 To simply put it, there are no “boundaries” in the artwork。 The artist truly understand the human anatomy as well as demons, showcasing that which most humans could never fathom if they forced to come face to face with the one place most people never want to go。 Hell。5 out of 5 stars。Author F。 D。 Gross 。。。more

This was extremely dark, I didn’t expect it to be that grim。 But I love it! Grimdark fantasy at its finest。 The illustrations are incredible and the quality of the pages and the front and back cover make this feel like a premium collectors item。 I highly recommend Bersek if you enjoy dark manga。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book is a solid 4 no question about it。 I'm not really into grimdark, but I guess Berserk says otherwise, lol。This book IS NOT for the faint of heart。 If you're easily offended, get too deeply into your story, or like to like the protagonist of a story this might not be the book for you。 Berserk IS NOT a retelling of the Arthur tales, there are no brave, good knights here。The writing is solid, if somewhat laggy at times。 This is, of course, my personal prejudice against decompression which This book is a solid 4 no question about it。 I'm not really into grimdark, but I guess Berserk says otherwise, lol。This book IS NOT for the faint of heart。 If you're easily offended, get too deeply into your story, or like to like the protagonist of a story this might not be the book for you。 Berserk IS NOT a retelling of the Arthur tales, there are no brave, good knights here。The writing is solid, if somewhat laggy at times。 This is, of course, my personal prejudice against decompression which all manga have。 I mean, seriously, can we get to the point。 But, honestly, there isn't a lot of that in Berserk。 I'm just a slow reader。 LOL。 The book is good, the first story starts off with a bang。 I mean Berserk is literally making love to someone when violence ensues。 But that's kind of the point of this book, excessive amounts of violence and gore and a hero who doesn't care。 He is on a mission。 What exactly that mission is, is probably revenge or to get that mark off of him。 How it got there, who he's after, why revenge, what planet are we on? These are things you don't know at the start and you won't know at the end, either。 And that's something, because this book contains the first three volumes of the series。 So yeah。 Do you mind not knowing? Honestly, no。 There is enough action, violence and battles to keep us from being too bored or worried about these specifics at the start。 To be fair, the book ends with the beginning of "The Golden Age" story arc, which seems to be recounting Guts' backstory。 And boy does it start grimly。 It leaves off on a cliffhanger which again begs the question, just how dark can you get? As with a lot of grimdark material, there is not a lot of posturing or philosophizing about morality。 The world is just a dark place, with hideously evil people, ridiculously naively innocent people, and the rest of the dregs who inhabit the middle。 There isn't too much going on in the way of justifying actions, an action is just a reaction to something that happens in this world, or something done to prevent said action。 This is a very plot driven book。 The characters do not compel the story, the events are the forward momentum。 If you're looking for something different, something with appealing characters or a bigger emphasis on the mysteries you might continue looking to find that elsewhere。That said, the artwork is a solid 5 stars。 Oh my gah! I mean, seriously。 There are times when the faces are a little weird, or the bodies seem a little misproportioned but 98% of the time the artwork is amazing。 Truly beautiful work。 Yes, he depicts some pretty disgusting, gory battles, and the monsters are creepy af but their depictions are very realistic。 The manga style is less like One Piece, and more like Akira, but make no mistake, the style is still very manga。 In particular, at the beginning of Golden Age the castle sieges and the soldiers in armor these are drawn magnificently。 It is truly inspiring。 Kentaro Miura is a master artist。 I cannot speak highly enough of the art。 The subject matter of course, again, battles, rapes, murder, disgusting monsters, these are horrid things, but they are without question rendered realistically and beautifully。The character of Guts is very problematic, he is not a hero you will root for。 He clearly has feelings, and he's human underneath all the layers of vengeance, and darkness。 But make no mistake, Guts is an a-hole of epic proportions。 That said, Puck, his cute little elvish companion and the comic relief is all heart and love and good meaning and always tries to bring out the best in Guts。 Time and again he fails, just proving time and again what a totally irredeemable character Guts is。 Or is he? I'm sure The Golden Age will at least show us what led to Guts being such a hard character, and maybe who he wants revenge against, why, and how he got that mark on his neck。 But perhaps I'm asking for too much, too quickly。 There are definite mysteries in the story, and they're cool, but what propels the narrative is neither the characters or the mystery, it is the violence and the battles。 Which is not a bad thing。 As I said, Guts is hard to love, because every time you think he's going to do something sweet, or for the right reason you come to learn that he's not。 And the reader much like Puck is often left sighing and crying about that reprehensible man。With gorgeous artwork 。 。 。 of despicable things, with fully realized and all too human characters 。 。 。 you don't necessarily love (well, Puck yes, but he's not human), and a story that doesn't quit dropping you from one battle and action to another this series is definitely one to read。 I highly recommend Berserk, with a caveat。 If you do not like GRIMDARK, if you are easily offended, or if subjects of a very sexual nature and non-consent are things you don't care for in your fiction then stay away from this book。 THIS IS NOT ONE PIECE。 I would not recommend this for anyone under 18, at least, and definitely no one who dislikes GRIMDARK。 。。。more

I think I’m too old and have read too much fantasy to be truly impressed with Berserk。 It’s。。。 fine。 The story is straightforward and Miura’s art is very good。 But there are so many cliches。 I wasn’t surprised once reading this book。 We have an edgy badass lead (with giant sword), comic relief sidekick, girl locked in a tower, evil rulers, vengeance, and so on。 It also seems like Miura revels in shocking for shock’s sake, like he’s trying to prove how far he can go。 I’m sure this was shocking in I think I’m too old and have read too much fantasy to be truly impressed with Berserk。 It’s。。。 fine。 The story is straightforward and Miura’s art is very good。 But there are so many cliches。 I wasn’t surprised once reading this book。 We have an edgy badass lead (with giant sword), comic relief sidekick, girl locked in a tower, evil rulers, vengeance, and so on。 It also seems like Miura revels in shocking for shock’s sake, like he’s trying to prove how far he can go。 I’m sure this was shocking in 1989 when it began, but it’s less so 30+ years later。 Not really Miura’s fault, but still。 I do like the dark humor elements, or just straight humor like when people say, “Look at his sword! It’s so big!” Yeah, I laughed at that。I might continue Berserk someday, because I did find this book somewhat fun, and it’s perfectly readable。 But I won’t rush to do so。 。。。more

Berserk is simply outstanding, one of the best manga’s that I’ve ever read! The story is original, gripping and immensely unsettling, pair this with some utterly amazing and detailed artwork and you have a masterpiece in dark fiction。 This has my highest recommendation; I’d also endorse the 1997 anime which is a fantastic adaptation。

Despite already owning a good portion of the manga in traditional volumes, I’ve had my eye on these deluxe editions since they’d been released and seeing this installment go out of print pushed me to make the investment into all currently released Berserk Deluxe Editions, and boy, what a good decision that was。 Reading Berserk in 7x10, in it’s beautiful packaging, is an absolute pleasure。 I fuckin looove Berserk, and being able to finally see Miura’s incredible art in a format that does it justi Despite already owning a good portion of the manga in traditional volumes, I’ve had my eye on these deluxe editions since they’d been released and seeing this installment go out of print pushed me to make the investment into all currently released Berserk Deluxe Editions, and boy, what a good decision that was。 Reading Berserk in 7x10, in it’s beautiful packaging, is an absolute pleasure。 I fuckin looove Berserk, and being able to finally see Miura’s incredible art in a format that does it justice is a dream。 Deluxe Vol。 1 collects the first three Berserk volumes, which is essentially the entirety of the Blackswordsman Arc and the very start of the Golden Age arc。 It’s often overlooked for the Golden Age arc, since that is the backbone and beating heart of Berserk, but these volumes do an extraordinary job at introducing the ceaseless brutality of the world, and like a slab of iron through soft tissue, enter stage left, my favorite protagonist ever, Guts。 At this stage in his story, Guts’ humanity is at absolute rock bottom, morality is an annoyance to be flicked aside and his bottomless pit of anger fuels every waking moment。 Only with the full context of the story can you sympathize with him during this period of slaughter and depravity, and even still, twinkles of humanity shine through once or twice in these volumes, letting you know you’re not following some senseless hell-bent psychopath。 Some of my favorite panels of the series are in these volumes。 The gorgeous double page battle of Guts fighting possessed skeletons, the introduction to the God-Hand and their MC Escher labyrinth dimension, among many others。 The easiest complaint or criticism to make about these volumes is that the art isnt as refined as it is currently or has been for the past 20 years, but regardless, Miura’s exquisite eye has been present since the beginning。 The law of causality drives this world, and the gods behind it all are devils that sow chaos through the pacts they make with desperate and despicable humans。 Guts must wade through blood and corpses just to survive the world in it’s current state, and as a reader, I’m just so stoked to follow his journey and get this absolute masterpiece started up again。 Fuckin 5 out of 5 。。。more

Well, it's a number of things。 First of all, and this is likely something that is more intertwined with manga than traditional Western comics, but there isn't much storytelling throughout the first volume。 Or rather, story telling through words。 There are far more panels with no words, than with。 I always wax lyrical here about world building, and lore, and above all, telling a compelling story。 Well, whilst I don't dispute the power a picture has to transcend language at times。 It happens far too much here for my liking, and with what are usually, overly bloated, difficult to follow fight scenes。 To me, it is always the lead up to a fight scene, and the aftermath where the true power of a story is。 Berserk Volume one seems to do the exact opposite of this, with very little in the way of a build or follow up, and instead, we get page, after page, after page, of fight scenes, which Ii frequently struggled to tell exactly what was going on half the time。 Maybe its me needing to get used to the more anime style of fight artwork in manga, or maybe Miura just wasn't quite bringing his A game yet (as some of the other artwork would testify too, but I found it all rather confusing and unrewarding。 but most of all, the thing I liked the least about this book is … Puck! that's right, that annoying little character, used as an annoying narrative device and the supposed heart, and comic relief to the story。 I say supposed, as nothing he ever said or did was anything more than god awful, and a detriment to whatever was occurring around him。 Yes, it clearly lends itself to a more Japanese sensibility than mine, at least。 But this loathsome little so and so was something I would much rather have seen as small eraser particles, blown off the page and left on the floor。 Despite all that, Miura clearly had an idea where he was going with this story, even if it does seem somewhat disjointed and aimless early on。 Though you can't exactly skip this volume, as some of the characters and events here play a role at the start of the second volume, and perhaps even further。 It certainly makes for a tiresome beginning to what could ultimately be, something rather spectacular。 Chalk this one up to a rough start, although one that will pay off rather quickly, as soon as you open Volume 2。 3/5OmniBen。 。。。more
