Full disclaimer， I flipped through and enjoyed all the photographs。 I only read the captions of the particularly intriguing photos。I am not really an art enthusiast but this book might help me define my aesthetic。 This would make a wonderful gift qnd coffee table book。

As I so often do with these “coffee table books，” I paged through rather than read。 In this one， I looked at all the photos and noted places and dates but only read the entirety of info on a few of the pages。 This wasn’t because the text was so small （although it was） but because I didn’t want to spend that much time learning about the history and current state of these pictured buildings， objects， and public attractions。 Much of it is no doubt interesting， but like so many travel books， the kno As I so often do with these “coffee table books，” I paged through rather than read。 In this one， I looked at all the photos and noted places and dates but only read the entirety of info on a few of the pages。 This wasn’t because the text was so small （although it was） but because I didn’t want to spend that much time learning about the history and current state of these pictured buildings， objects， and public attractions。 Much of it is no doubt interesting， but like so many travel books， the knowledge gained becomes overwhelming， overlapping， and confused in my mind without any personal experiential context to frame and organize it。 It also creates a whimsical desire to visit all these far-flung foreign sites which is overshadowed by a feeling of regret because I know I will never get to most of them。But the pictures？ Beautiful， intriguing， wonderful， and totally appropriate to the title if you are a fan of Wes Anderson’s films。 They are all colorful， often in a monochromatic way。 Always symmetrical， they feature a subject front and center bordered on each side and top by mountains or sky or water。 Think cottages and castles and the top of hotels。 Or a building’s interior so balanced you’d swear there was a mirror down the center。 Think swimming pools and bowling alleys。 And there is often a sense of loneliness， of isolation to the subjects。 Think lighthouses or an overhead shot of a boat surrounded by blue。 The most repeated subjects are viewfinders at scenic spots that look like little robot heads with their eyepieces staring back at viewers。 。。。more

Lots of pictures that were sooo Wes Anderson， but there were also a few that just。。。。 weren’t。 And dang， that text was TINY。 And the blurb was almost never what I actually was interested in about the picture， so I did a lot of skimming。 Idk。 It was fun and made me follow them on Instagram， so， I guess it was a win。 But just barely。

Well this was delightful！ The pictures were great but the descriptions were a treat as well。 Definitely recommend having your phone handy so you can save some of these places to google maps， once we can travel again。
