Summary

A new edition of one of the most important and critically acclaimed Batman adventures ever, written by Frank Miller, author of The Dark Knight Returns

In 1986, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli produced this groundbreaking reinterpretation of the origin of Batman—who he is and how he came to be。

Written shortly after The Dark Knight Returns, Miller's dystopian fable of Batman's final days, Year One set the stage for a new vision of a legendary character。

This edition includes the complete graphic novel, a new introduction by writer Frank Miller and a new illustrated afterword by artist David Mazzucchelli。 Completing this collection are over 40 pages of never-before-seen developmental material such as character and layout sketches, sample script pages, sketches and more that provide a glimpse into the making of this contemporary classic。

This volume collects Batman #404–407。

This is basically a movie storyboard and I mean that in the best way possible。Cinematic in its development and artwork。Any professed Batman fan must read this one。

A fun little read despite the fact that I don't read many comics。 It's interesting to see how these printed works inspired the widely watched film versions that many of us are familiar with。 A fun little read despite the fact that I don't read many comics。 It's interesting to see how these printed works inspired the widely watched film versions that many of us are familiar with。 。。。more

The best thing about this origin story of Batman is the art by David Mazzucchelli which i found quite amazing。。。there's not much deviation from the 'original' origin story but the simultaneously development of commissioner Gordon's story is interesting The best thing about this origin story of Batman is the art by David Mazzucchelli which i found quite amazing。。。there's not much deviation from the 'original' origin story but the simultaneously development of commissioner Gordon's story is interesting 。。。more

Dark, dreary, and excitingI love the grim dark realities of Batman more than the campier works, and I adore Miller’s take on him。 It’s also a really cool introduction to Jim Gordon, especially after just having watched Harley Quinn where Gordon is a useless alcoholic, completely consumed by his inability to save Gotham City。The art is very old-school, which isn’t my usual preference, but fits the premise of the book。I just wish the font used for Batman’s thoughts was easier to read。

I thought I was tired of origin stories (especially Batman's)。 But this is just so well written and plotted。 The dual narrative tying together Bruce Wayne and Gordon's stories is so well done。 Very fun。 Love to see a low tech Batman struggling against teenagers。 Miller escalates tension nicely too! Also, just loved the last page。 Perfect way to end it! Miller’s Batman。 I’ve known that name for a while and have wanted to read from the man who defined Batman for a grungier era and I。。。was unimpressed。Perhaps it was due to my dislike of the art style after reading Watchmen。 Watchmen was a little bit less cartoony and meshed quite well in the panel to panel style。 This felt amateurish by comparison。 There were a few panels that will stick in my memory (the one of Gordon in his vehicle in the rain stands out), but other than that I found the colors Miller’s Batman。 I’ve known that name for a while and have wanted to read from the man who defined Batman for a grungier era and I。。。was unimpressed。Perhaps it was due to my dislike of the art style after reading Watchmen。 Watchmen was a little bit less cartoony and meshed quite well in the panel to panel style。 This felt amateurish by comparison。 There were a few panels that will stick in my memory (the one of Gordon in his vehicle in the rain stands out), but other than that I found the colors too flat and monochrome。 The writing was ok, but drifts into self-parody。 I chuckled when two of the characters talked about how much they hated the city。 They hated themselves。。。the world。。。etc。 Quite hard to read in a post Lego-Batman world。 I haven’t even seen the Lego Batman movie and still know the Will Arnett “Darkness” song。 I never felt like I got to know Batman/Bruce Wayne。 I thought this was going to be a book of failures, but it never really felt as though Batman was questioning himself。 He was Batman the entire time。The introduction of Catwoman (or ‘90s Sinead O’Connor) felt a bit out of place。 Miller wanted some prostitutes and edginess and decided to put her in there。 Not edgy enough? Child prostitute! It felt gratuitous。Overall, this is the kind of schlock I expect from comics。 I’m underwhelmed。 。。。more

Those who scorn comics for not being "real literature" are really missing out on this one。 Every panel is an absolute work of art—Miller's incredible writing coupled with Mazzucchelli's hauntingly beautiful illustrations make this a must-read。 Those who scorn comics for not being "real literature" are really missing out on this one。 Every panel is an absolute work of art—Miller's incredible writing coupled with Mazzucchelli's hauntingly beautiful illustrations make this a must-read。 。。。more

Na na na na na na na na boi this was good。 Batman is the best。 The drawings are so simple and striking。 It’s so easy to read, and each page is filled with such detail and nuance。 But like, why is Gordon so horny in this? I don’t care about his infidelity。 I care about Batman kicking ass。 Nonetheless。 I loved it。 Batman is the best。

Fox

Probably one of most well written Batman stories。

Hands down the best origin story for the Batman。 Gritty, thrilling and goosebumps inducing。

Jim Smith

Solid noir comic with a definitive Batman origin。 Gordon is particularly well-drawn here, and the more realistic take on Batman is clearly proto-Nolan。 I liked how crap Batman was for his first few outings。 Almost got killed by teenagers stealing a telly。I recommend reading The Long Halloween immediately after to continue the grand origin story of gothic Gotham。
