Summary

Blindsided by her mother's sudden death and wrecked by a recent love affair, Casey Peabody has arrived in Massachusetts in the summer of 1997 without a plan。 Her mail consists of wedding invitations and final notices from debt collectors。 A former child golf prodigy, she now waits tables in Harvard Square and rents a tiny, moldy room at the side of a garage where she works on the novel she has been writing for six years。 At 31, Casey is still clutching onto something nearly all her old friends have let go of: the determination to live a creative life。 When she falls for two very different men at the same time, her world fractures even more。 Casey's fight to fulfill her creative ambitions and balance the conflicting demands of art and life is challenged in ways that push her to the brink。

Writers & Lovers follows Casey - a smart and achingly vulnerable protagonist - in the last days of a long youth, a time when every element of her life comes to a crisis。 Written with King's trademark humor, heart, and intelligence, Writers & Lovers is a transfixing novel that explores the terrifying and exhilarating leap between the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another。

This book is one of the clearest, most moving works of fiction I've had the pleasure of reading in a long time。 King's "Writers & Lovers" tells the story of Casey, a woman in her early thirties who is navigating the murky waters between youth and full-fledged adulthood。 Casey is crippled by student debt, facing romantic heartbreak, and grappling with the unlikelihood of her dream of being a full-time writer。 While these struggles are quintessential to the coming of age experience for many people This book is one of the clearest, most moving works of fiction I've had the pleasure of reading in a long time。 King's "Writers & Lovers" tells the story of Casey, a woman in her early thirties who is navigating the murky waters between youth and full-fledged adulthood。 Casey is crippled by student debt, facing romantic heartbreak, and grappling with the unlikelihood of her dream of being a full-time writer。 While these struggles are quintessential to the coming of age experience for many people in their late twenties and early thirties, Casey's situation is complicated by an insurmountable grief that takes hold of her after the unexpected and sudden death of her mother。 The novel follows Casey over the course of about a year as she settles into her life。 She lives in a converted garage of one of her brother's friends, works endless shifts as a server at a restaurant where she is undervalued and even abused, and struggles to find time to write a novel。 Casey is idiosyncratic: she bikes everywhere, has an emotional attachment to a group of geese, and deals with anxiety that makes her constantly second guess herself。 Despite all of this, she is an incredibly lovable character, and readers will find themselves rooting for her the whole way through this book。 Casey eventually is faced with a few different dilemmas that make up the crux of the action in the book。 Should she abandon her artistic pursuits and get a real job? Should she stay with the famous writer who she's started to date, who is a widow, has two young sons, and a very stable life fit into a beautiful home? Or should she chance it on a young, chipped-tooth, fellow aspiring writer who is as attractive to her as he is unpredictable?King is able to build beautiful characters throughout "Writers & Lovers。" Her prose is sparse in the best way and conveys poignant emotions with almost surgical precision。 The observations made throughout the novel about jealousy, self-doubt, creativity, the human experience, love, grief, and friendship will leave you underlining a sentence on nearly every page。 The motifs of shadows (the Latin quotation from Dante Alighieri) and "double lives" (Casey vs。 Camila, the infidelities and infractions of parents, and the affair with Luke) add nuance to the idea that King seemingly seeks to beautify throughout this novel: that people are three dimensional and life is messy, but it is worth it。 The juxtaposition between the two animals that Casey cannot seem to escape--bees and geese--seem to present a dichotomy between staying in one place to become a part of a community and constantly moving without putting any roots down, using others only to insofar as they help you get to the next place。 In this way, the animal symbolism works represent the conflicts that Casey struggles with in her own life: stay and settle or remain aloof and aspirational。What makes this book so enjoyable is King's ability to see the most ordinary and minute details of life as indicators of the vast inner, private experiences that we all carry with us: King is able to take a plain girl who passes by on a bike and peel back all of her layers, revealing a portrait of a life that manages to be both standard and extraordinary at the same time。 King's ability to do this lends itself very well to the rising action and middle portion of the novel。 The ending felt very "clean," but this is also the edge of the portrait--it doesn't mean that this is the end of everything and Casey's struggles are over and done with, but rather that her attitude towards this set of struggles has shifted。I'm convinced that this book would be an enjoyable read for anyone, but writers, artists, and anyone going through a quarter life crisis (or similar anxiety-inducing life transitions) should definitely pick up this book。 If you have ever wondered if security is synonymous with selling out, read this book。 If you're into short, direct sentences that get to the heart of the matter (a la Hemingway Ernest), you'll enjoy this。 "Writers & Lovers" reminded me of my enjoyment of Normal People and The Sun Also Rises。Do NOT read this book if you're interested in books with a lot of action; this book relies more on character development and if you're not fond of that, you might find this book boring in the way reading a stranger's diary might be。 King has also done a wonderful job of creating a cast of characters that is representative of today's society。 We see both men and women in different positions of power。 There are also LGBTQ+ characters。Trigger warnings (below) may contain spoilers:。。。。。。。。。。。。cheating/infidelity, sexual harassment, financial insecurity, death of a parent, death of a spouse, abandonment, incest, peeping tom/voyeurism/invasion of privacy, panic disorder, panic attacks, anxiety and depression, insomnia。 。。。more

I was nervous at first…because presented with all of Casey’s problems I anticipated a downer of a novel, but was pleasantly surprised to find it quite the opposite。 King’s writing style is very readable and includes enough witty and observant details to make the plot relatable and not depressing。 I also enjoyed her east coast sensibility。 This is my first exposure to Lily King’s work, and I’m looking forward to reading her other novels。

Something about this book kept me captivated and I read through it so quickly。 I liked the authors writing style。 Especially how little the main character spoke - made it easier to absorb。 Always love a happy ending。

I tried to read this as slowly as possible- I just wanted more time with these words。 I was plunged into nostalgia for working in restaurants in the late 90’s, and for the times in my life where I’ve felt truly adrift。 I loved the bit characters, like Mary Hand, and the bigger ones, like Silas。 This book so perfectly expresses that sometimes everything in your life has to fall apart in order for you to change。 It’s also about grief, and disillusionment with the promises the patriarchy makes that I tried to read this as slowly as possible- I just wanted more time with these words。 I was plunged into nostalgia for working in restaurants in the late 90’s, and for the times in my life where I’ve felt truly adrift。 I loved the bit characters, like Mary Hand, and the bigger ones, like Silas。 This book so perfectly expresses that sometimes everything in your life has to fall apart in order for you to change。 It’s also about grief, and disillusionment with the promises the patriarchy makes that never come to pass。 Casey’s internal monologue never felt forced。 This was perhaps the first book I’ve read this year that I truly loved。 。。。more

I can’t even explain this reading experience。 It felt so real。 Casey (Camila) is a struggling writer, who is horribly in debt, working a waitress job that allows her writing hours during the day but long work hours at night。 She lost her mother within the last year and has a strained relationship with her father (who I detested throughout the whole book)。 She’s living in a potting shed for free per her brother’s good friend’s gift (she just has to walk his dog daily and put up with his being a j I can’t even explain this reading experience。 It felt so real。 Casey (Camila) is a struggling writer, who is horribly in debt, working a waitress job that allows her writing hours during the day but long work hours at night。 She lost her mother within the last year and has a strained relationship with her father (who I detested throughout the whole book)。 She’s living in a potting shed for free per her brother’s good friend’s gift (she just has to walk his dog daily and put up with his being a jerk)。 She also is throughout the book dealing with past livers and/or current ones。 I know it sounds bizarre but I just found this book so hard to put down。 I wanted to see where Casey landed。 I’m sure this book is chock full of literary writing style and high-brow writing, but I just read it for what it is a perfect reading experience。 。。。more

3。5 starsThis was definitely an enjoyable novel, and will, I'm sure, make a good movie when Toni Collette gets around to making it。 But the reason it didn't score a 4 or higher from me is because I don't think it was doing anything particularly unique。 We are dropped in Massachusetts, 1997, following Casey: 31-years-old, struggling to make ends meet, in a job that tires her, trying to finish the novel she's been working on for six years but hitting several walls, somewhat haunted by the sudden e 3。5 starsThis was definitely an enjoyable novel, and will, I'm sure, make a good movie when Toni Collette gets around to making it。 But the reason it didn't score a 4 or higher from me is because I don't think it was doing anything particularly unique。 We are dropped in Massachusetts, 1997, following Casey: 31-years-old, struggling to make ends meet, in a job that tires her, trying to finish the novel she's been working on for six years but hitting several walls, somewhat haunted by the sudden end of her latest love affair and also mourning the recent loss of her mother。 There is certainly a lot going on in this woman's life。 I really did feel for her as a character, particularly when a health scare is thrown into the mix。 I'm glad this part of the novel unfolded fairly late, because something eeriely similar happened to me days prior to my seeing it mirrored in this novel (I actually read a few early pages in the hospital waiting room), otherwise I'd have probably seen it as a sign and doubly convinced myself I was dying。 But thankfully all is well, so I could read this novel without scaring myself to death, either。 One of the chief reasons for the middling rating is some of the characterisation。 The two 'love interests' in the novel are Oscar and Silas, the former a successful, published writer, and the latter an aspiring novelist like Casey herself。 For me, though, Oscar felt extremely two-dimensional; including a character who is both famous and a young widower has the potential to expose some really interesting aspects of his character, but to me he just felt like a rom-com character with a big cheesy grin。 I'm not really sure what Casey sees in him, either, as he is a little creepy and forward, not to mention self-centred。。。but maybe that's just me。 Silas was more interesting but even with him, I don't feel like we truly got to 'know' him。 It felt like we were just scraping the surface with him, by the time the novel actually ended。 I think King could have dug a little deeper there。 My favourite moments were the interactions between Casey and her friend Muriel, a friend from her writing course at university, as well as following the journey of Casey's novel as she rewrote it, poked at it, despaired over it。 I, too, studied Creative Writing at university and so it almost felt like coming home to be dropped into workshops and telephone conversations rooted around the question, 'What am I even doing here? Help!' Casey's novel sounded really interesting, too, making me wish I could now go and read that。 A good novel, and a good one to get lost in, but like I said before, not particularly unique。 。。。more

Since this book is set in the late 90s, I'll admit that 90s nostalgia is a large part of what guided me to pick it up。 The heroine, Casey, is 31, but in some ways this book really does feel like a coming of age story。 Casey dreams of being a writer, but she's been adrift for quite a while and this book captures her right at the moment when she's having to make decisions and get down to the business of figuring out her life。 She's also been through a breakup and now faces the possibility of life Since this book is set in the late 90s, I'll admit that 90s nostalgia is a large part of what guided me to pick it up。 The heroine, Casey, is 31, but in some ways this book really does feel like a coming of age story。 Casey dreams of being a writer, but she's been adrift for quite a while and this book captures her right at the moment when she's having to make decisions and get down to the business of figuring out her life。 She's also been through a breakup and now faces the possibility of life with one of two very different men。 This story would have been compelling if it weren't so boring。For reasons that become apparent later in the book, Casey holds herself distant from the reader for much of the first part of the story。 We see her going through the motions of work as a waitress and living in a moldy outbuilding。 In other words, she drifts along through her days。 Change starts to come as she meets Oscar and Silas, but the book just didn't capture me。 Every now and again I'd hit a scene or a turn of phrase that really sparkled, but most of the book plodded along。 As I mentioned before, this novel is ostensibly set in the late 90s, but really it could have been set just about anywhere that didn't have cellphones。 The feeling of a particular time just didn't shine through for me here。The story does pull together more toward the end and there are some portions that are beautifully written。 However, the overall novel is fairly uneven and I suspect many readers will find the first half to be something of a slog。 One last note - since some of the reviews talk about how romantic this book is, I have to admit that I was expecting something wonderfully romantic。 There is something of a romance plot in this book, but reading genre romance has clearly spoiled me because what I found in these pages pales in comparison to some of the best of what genre fiction has to offer in the romance department。 Those who turn up their noses at genre fiction may be fooled, but romance readers will know better。 。。。more
