Summary

A Japanese-inspired guide to living a happier, more fulfilled life。

This fascinating book, packed full of advice, takes you down the path to a fulfilling and happy life by drawing lessons from Japanese culture and ancient philosophy 。 It gives you tools to make the most of every day by learning from some of the simple life lessons intrinsic to the Japanese way of being。。
The book is divided into two themes – Kokoro (heart and mind) and Karada (body), In Kokoro, you learn about ikigai or your purpose, be this in your career or your personal passion for a pastime。 Igikai is fundamental to the Japanese way of life and has been cited as the reason people live long and happy lives。 Wabi-sabi and kintsugi are the Japanese philosophies that value imperfection and balance and the importance of approaching life holistically。 In part 2 the author shows the practical and actionable steps that Westerners can take to incorporate some Japanese philosophies into their own lives, from forest bathing (shinrinyoku) and connecting with nature, to the delicate art flower arranging (ikebana) which encourages a mindful state of being, to the practicality of bento boxes 。 With recipes, lifestyle tips and lots of ideas to put into practice, the third section of the book will help you establish new routines and habits。
Beautifully illustrated throughout by Japanese illustrator Ryo Takemaso, this little book of wisdom is the perfect gift to enhance your life。

For the first part, Ikigai, I was sceptical。 Some of the points and lessons felt repetitive or similar to mantras from other self-help/lifestyle guides, so I suspected it was more a coffee table piece than anything else。 But as it progressed, as practical examples, language and anecdotes came into play, more and more did it feel like learning, intrigue, stimulation。 Personal highlights included that the lessons encouraged me to enjoy even the simple act of admiring the book in my hands, enjoying For the first part, Ikigai, I was sceptical。 Some of the points and lessons felt repetitive or similar to mantras from other self-help/lifestyle guides, so I suspected it was more a coffee table piece than anything else。 But as it progressed, as practical examples, language and anecdotes came into play, more and more did it feel like learning, intrigue, stimulation。 Personal highlights included that the lessons encouraged me to enjoy even the simple act of admiring the book in my hands, enjoying having my cat next to me, watching the rain and snowfall outside。 The reflections on where Western attitudes may fall short, or even fail us, in sustaining our wellbeing, felt particularly relevant under what COVID has exposed of the dangers (and unnecessities) of modern worklife chaos。 And I should like to read again for the vocabulary, at least once my Japanese is less rudimentary。 More than anything, this book makes me excited to have my own place。 I'm sure I'll return to ENL's advice several times when I work in baby-steps, as she advises, to gain greater creative control of how I live。 I would recommend it to anyone who seeks much-needed but kind changes in their lives, who wants to learn about Japanese lifestyle philosophies, or who simply likes an easy, aesthetic read。 。。。more

Vì là sách nói về Nhật Bản nên chỉ có những điều của Nhật。 Một số điều có thể áp dụng được trong đời sống, ví dụ như triết lý Kintsugi về việc sửa chữa mọi thứ

It is quite an easy read。 I enjoyed it as it offered a refreshing insight into the various Japanese philosophies which are applicable to our daily routines。 It talks of the different Japanese concepts and assures you that life can be lived easily if you know the hacks。

This book is rich on explaining the culture of Japanese people and their life style。 There are some points that I would like to add to my journey in life such as trying the spring bath, tea ceremony, having a lunch with my colleague in a restaurant, and adding new habits。 According to the Japanese proverbs:" the beginning is easy。 Continuing is hard。 This book is rich on explaining the culture of Japanese people and their life style。 There are some points that I would like to add to my journey in life such as trying the spring bath, tea ceremony, having a lunch with my colleague in a restaurant, and adding new habits。 According to the Japanese proverbs:" the beginning is easy。 Continuing is hard。 。。。more

Kind of a relaxing book, I find this one tender and soft like an afternoon in Kyoto。 The author brought Japanese DIY into this book and other cultural things too。 However, it seems to me like a guide book about Japanese cooking and crafting more than Japanese thinking。 Although ones who like Japanese culture must read this since it has so many terms that intriguing。

Japanese lifestyle is always full of ikigai。 I have always find it fascinating which is the reason why this book finds its place in my bookshelf。 I have always love to ‘shinrin-yoku‘ even though I wouldn’t say that I managed to attain the complete benefits from it。 However, having to experience komorebi during those shinrin-yoku walks always provide a refreshing feeling to the mind。 Calligraphy is another form of ‘ritual’ that through motions, I let the creative juice flow from the mind through Japanese lifestyle is always full of ikigai。 I have always find it fascinating which is the reason why this book finds its place in my bookshelf。 I have always love to ‘shinrin-yoku‘ even though I wouldn’t say that I managed to attain the complete benefits from it。 However, having to experience komorebi during those shinrin-yoku walks always provide a refreshing feeling to the mind。 Calligraphy is another form of ‘ritual’ that through motions, I let the creative juice flow from the mind through the fingers。 Somehow along the way, I will begin to experience the peacefulness as my hand glides effortlessly across the paper。 I don’t do kanji calligraphy though。 But the feeling is probably much the same。 Wabi-sabi and Kintsugi’ing in my everyday life is something that is really exciting。 Accepting imperfection and weaknesses is key to greater heights。 It’s not something which is measured by how thick your wallet is。 It can be as simple as achieving peace in your mind and grateful with what you have。 This book also outlines the minimalism lifestyle, which is reflected in many Japanese homes。 Decluttering has always been my biggest challenge but it is now a breeze since i started it by taking one step at a time。 The most important guide to declutter is don’t be creative about it! It is the only time when you don’t want your brain to be creative。 There are also recipes in this book which are pretty good。 。。。more

A good book for a beginner of exploding about Japanese culture。 It inspires people to learn more about Japan thanks to personal stories and experiences from the author。 This book might not be an excellent book with beautiful words but it makes me calm when reading it。Furthermore, I really love the illustrations in this book。 So, if you are planning to buy it, buy the paperback, the e-book version is not a good choice for this kind of book。

Nice little book that gave brief and anecdotal overviews of various parts of Japanese culture。 Many of these cultural elements were infused with Niimi Longhurst's experiences and lifestyle which could be a bit sentimental and tedious。 But it was a nice personal touch at times that didn't prescribe to academic or journalistic writing。 That being said, her writing isn't great and you shouldn't expect it to be really, based on her background and how the book is set up。 The photos and layouts are de Nice little book that gave brief and anecdotal overviews of various parts of Japanese culture。 Many of these cultural elements were infused with Niimi Longhurst's experiences and lifestyle which could be a bit sentimental and tedious。 But it was a nice personal touch at times that didn't prescribe to academic or journalistic writing。 That being said, her writing isn't great and you shouldn't expect it to be really, based on her background and how the book is set up。 The photos and layouts are definitely stunning and attest to her digital art and blogging background。 I found the kintsugi (gold ceramic repair), ocha (tea) and shodo (calligraphy) sections most insightful。 The others like Japanese homes, onsens and foods were all sweet reminders of my own (short-lived one-year) life in Japan。 。。。more

I could have titled this book 'Discoveries & Nothing Else' - it's a very inviting concept for a book, especially for someone like me who loves and is addicted to Japan having started the habit or tradition of spending holidays in the country every 2 years since 2013。I like and I always feel the need to be culture-shocked so unless I'm taught by local people the when, how, why of things, I don't normally ask。This was a book that provided me with lots of answers but nothing else。 It's nicely and c I could have titled this book 'Discoveries & Nothing Else' - it's a very inviting concept for a book, especially for someone like me who loves and is addicted to Japan having started the habit or tradition of spending holidays in the country every 2 years since 2013。I like and I always feel the need to be culture-shocked so unless I'm taught by local people the when, how, why of things, I don't normally ask。This was a book that provided me with lots of answers but nothing else。 It's nicely and concisely written, simple narrative, maybe on purpose but it landed flat on my imagination。I craved for more - for examples, history lines, dates, episodes, anecdotes etc。It's all very well structured, framed and proposed but I expected more substance, more critical thinking and the digging out of the essence of all things。 。。。more

Pleasant book, the visuals and quality are very nice, and it was a relaxing way to pass a few hours。 That said, it’s very high-level, so don’t rely on this book to e。g。 find your ikigai。 Would have benefited from more Japanese history and viewpoints other than the author’s。 If you’re looking to just get a hint of what traditional Japanese culture is about, it’s not a bad starting point。

I think this a wonderful book about Japanese culture。 I started to admire it and it’s values。 I believe that other people should look up to this nation as long as they are succeeding at almost all spheres of their lives。 Furthermore, there is not only description, but also some receipts and instructions。 Might be useful for someone who is going to Japan or seeking for motivation to learn Japanese。
