Summary

This is one of those books where there’s no “good guy” to root for， and those are always my favorites。 I liked Vic’s weird little hobbies， like how he raised snails， and I found that very endearing。 But also felt weird about finding anything about him endearing since he was also gaslighting the hell out of his wife （who’s also not a good person， but still）。 I look forward to the movie adaptation of this book。

I’ve just been mugged， duped。 Like a slow moving train， I knew it was coming but I was stuck there on the tracks， affixed， with a gormless look on my dial， panting and salivating。 Very much in a state of excited expectation– thinking I was thinking the right thoughts， but no – this author was weaving a web。 She made me want the best for a psychopath， even when I kind of knew the character was a killer。 How did that happen？ I was still hoping， hoping I was wrong， hoping this person was the victim I’ve just been mugged， duped。 Like a slow moving train， I knew it was coming but I was stuck there on the tracks， affixed， with a gormless look on my dial， panting and salivating。 Very much in a state of excited expectation– thinking I was thinking the right thoughts， but no – this author was weaving a web。 She made me want the best for a psychopath， even when I kind of knew the character was a killer。 How did that happen？ I was still hoping， hoping I was wrong， hoping this person was the victim。 Alas， I was siding myself with the worst of the worst， the evilest of evil – a devious devil。Made me think， am I hacked from the same cloth as this killer？ *wipes blood off kitchen knife…。 hideous giggle…。。。no way！！ I only liked the bits of the psychopath which were likeable。 Liked the likeable bits。 This one was a friendly fiend。 This one was always reading books on diverse， interesting topics， like stained glass or Tiberius。 Who’d not befriend and chat with a person like that？ I would。 I'd chat and exchange bits of information all day with this one - with gay abandon。 I’d even visit their den for a cocktail – even be fascinated by their snail collection。 Hey， they might even put on a show。 Fascinating。Yes， fascinating Patricia Highsmith， this is the first time we’ve met – it won’t be the last， I will be ready for you， and your little tricks next time， your ploys – I won’t be so easily swindled。 You watch， if you could。Deep Water – 5 Stars 。。。more

4。5Bem no início do livro， achei que não valia o hype， também achei a história muito arrastada。 Mas com o passar das páginas minha opinião foi mudando completamente， fui me apegando aos personagens e torcendo para que eles se deem bem mesmo que estejam errados， graças a escrita maravilhosa de Highsmith。 O livro foi escrito em 1957 e continua muito atual， já quero ler outros livros da autora。

É muito interessante como Patricia Highsmith nos torna cúmplices dos crimes cometidos， ao mesmo tempo que julgamos e criticamos os personagens que tentam alertar a todos sobre eles。 Não achei uma leitura fácil， na verdade， por mais que todas as vezes que o pegasse para ler， lesse bastante， acabava não sentindo tanta vontade de parar para lê-lo， o que me fez demorar quase dez dias para terminar - mas isso não faz o livro deixar de ser interessante。

'As Vic slipped into sleep， the antagonism rose slowly in him against Melinda， almost involuntarily， wraithlike， groping like a wrestler for a hold。 It rose in him as something habitual might force its way to the surface。。。It was as if she wore a label， "My Enemy"， in his mind， and his enemy she was， beyond the reach of reason or imagination of change。 The wraithlike antagonism in his mind found an imaginary grip and tightened。。。' The psychological thriller， Deep Water， is my first Patricia Hi 'As Vic slipped into sleep， the antagonism rose slowly in him against Melinda， almost involuntarily， wraithlike， groping like a wrestler for a hold。 It rose in him as something habitual might force its way to the surface。。。It was as if she wore a label， "My Enemy"， in his mind， and his enemy she was， beyond the reach of reason or imagination of change。 The wraithlike antagonism in his mind found an imaginary grip and tightened。。。' The psychological thriller， Deep Water， is my first Patricia Highsmith and it knocked my socks off。 Vic and Melinda Van Allen's loveless marriage is one of appearances and convenience。 And in 1950's small town America， keeping up appearances is kind of a thing。 A pretty big thing。 To avoid a messy divorce， Vic， the doting father， unfailingly polite neighbour and erudite book printer， allows his wife certain， shall we say。。。indiscretions。 Except she's not very discrete。 And so we have a deliciously slow boil。 Because as you may have guessed， these situations never end well。I love the dark， brooding tone of her work and how Highsmith can write deceptively simple sentences that carry a ton of emotional impact。 The innocuous ' Get in and let's have a little chat' contextually sets off alarm bells in the reader's head and makes you gasp with dread。 The novel lives inside Vic's head， but we never really get inside deep enough to reveal too much， just enough， just a taste， as his sociopathic nature emerges to create a palpable tension。 The dark humorous undertones make you squirm。 Delectable。 There are no fancy plot twists or window dressings。 The novel is crisp， clean and you know the direction things are headed， but damn it's fun getting there all the same。 I can't wait to read more Patricia Highsmith。 。。。more

O livro iniciou de forma uma tanto arrastada e com a incômoda premissa de que tratava-se de um relacionamento em tal nível de declínio que， para não dar o divórcio o personagem Vic permitia que a esposa tivesse quantos amantes quisesse。 A mulher， Melinda passa o livro inteiro sendo desprezível， ela é vulgar， desrespeitosa， péssima mãe， ruim e indiferente ao marido e a filha Trixie。 O livro nos leva a muitas festas onde Vic esta sempre rodeado de amigos que ficam desconfortáveis com os amantes de O livro iniciou de forma uma tanto arrastada e com a incômoda premissa de que tratava-se de um relacionamento em tal nível de declínio que， para não dar o divórcio o personagem Vic permitia que a esposa tivesse quantos amantes quisesse。 A mulher， Melinda passa o livro inteiro sendo desprezível， ela é vulgar， desrespeitosa， péssima mãe， ruim e indiferente ao marido e a filha Trixie。 O livro nos leva a muitas festas onde Vic esta sempre rodeado de amigos que ficam desconfortáveis com os amantes de Melinda e eu compartilhei do desconforto deles。 Mas é aí que o livro pega um embalo e fica bom: Vic asssume o assassinato de um dos amantes para afugentar outros， funciona em parte mas logo chegam outros e esses outros não tem a mesma sorte。 Apesar de agora assassino， Vic é um personagem por quem se consegue torcer para que se safe de verdade， porque ele aguenta muita coisa， porém é aqui que começamos a pensar: porque ele se submete a aguentar tanta coisa？ que amor vale isso？ ou melhor que falta de amor vale isso？ As cenas dos assassinatos são incrivelmente bem descritas， gera adrenalina e um bom suspense， fiquei torcendo para que ele não fosse descoberto ate o fim do livro。 O final poderia ter sido melhor， mas foi coerente， infelizmente， porque me encantei com Vic e repudiei Melinda， não achei seu final tão merecido， esperava uma reviravolta um pouco mais irreverente， mas pelo menos ela pagou por seus pecados。Excelente livro， daqueles que não dá vontade de largar。 Atemporal e sensacional！ 。。。more

I don’t know about this one。 I honestly chose it because Gillian Flynn loved it and it was also on a list of best books being made into films。 Plus， from the description， it also seemed like it was right up my alley。 Sadly。。。this one didn’t pay off for me。 It was extremely slow and tedious for such a short book。 I didn’t hate it but it was far from what I was hoping。

Livro de março do clube， um romance policial。 Decidi repetir a dose e ler Highsmith de novo depois de adorar a experiência com O talentoso Ripley。 E talvez essa experiência prévia tenha sido um dos motivos pelos quais a leitura desse romance posterior foi muito menos satisfatória。 Muitos dos elementos que adorei em Ripley foram replicados aqui como uma fórmula básica a ser seguida， em vez de inovações inteligentes como são no romance mais famoso da autora。 Nos dois livros， temos um protagonista Livro de março do clube， um romance policial。 Decidi repetir a dose e ler Highsmith de novo depois de adorar a experiência com O talentoso Ripley。 E talvez essa experiência prévia tenha sido um dos motivos pelos quais a leitura desse romance posterior foi muito menos satisfatória。 Muitos dos elementos que adorei em Ripley foram replicados aqui como uma fórmula básica a ser seguida， em vez de inovações inteligentes como são no romance mais famoso da autora。 Nos dois livros， temos um protagonista ensimesmado e pacífico que aguenta cada um em seu nível uma cota de humilhações， até que a situação se torne insustentável e ocorra um crime。 O processo é muito parecido nos dois casos e até os crimes ocorrem em porcentagens muito próximas de leitura。E， enquanto Ripley nos conquista com seu próprio carisma， inteligência e desejos facilmente identificáveis， só torcemos por Vic porque os personagens que o antagonizam são muito mais insuportáveis que ele mesmo。 Também soam muito mais forçadas as soluções para driblar as investigações， porque Vic está longe de alcançar a excelência de Ripley， assim como suas motivações são muito mais banais que as dele。 Não queria comparar os protagonistas， mas o próprio livro me leva a isso ao repetir o mesmo molde com uma estrutura muito mais fraca。 Até o relacionamento de Vic com Melinda， um dos poucos aspectos que se diferenciam do livro escrito dois anos antes， é desperdiçado com um final frouxo e previsível。 Porém， não posso negar que a escrita da Highsmith continua bem competente e cumpre bem a função de manipular o leitor。 Pena que a viagem e o destino pelo qual ela nos guiou dessa vez tenha sido tão desinteressante。 。。。more
