Summary

UK National Book Awards 2013 "Book of the Year"

“Fantasy of the very best。” Wall Street Journal

A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral。 Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother。 He hasn’t thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she’d claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse where she once lived, the unremembered past comes flooding back。 And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy。

A groundbreaking work as delicate as a butterfly’s wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out。

“[Gaiman’s] mind is a dark fathomless ocean, and every time I sink into it, this world fades, replaced by one far more terrible and beautiful in which I will happily drown。” New York Times Book Review

I really don't know what I expected from this book but, I just couldn't make any sense of it, although I read it in a day hoping that it would all make sense, but it didn't for me。 I know this is a popular read but not for me。 I really don't know what I expected from this book but, I just couldn't make any sense of it, although I read it in a day hoping that it would all make sense, but it didn't for me。 I know this is a popular read but not for me。 。。。more

Feels like a fairy tale, Gaiman has a great way of mixing very real characters with very fantastical ones。

I loved this book from beginning to end even though it was sad。 Sad and magical。 The author nailed the nostalgia, mystery, magic, and fear that makes up childhood。 The boy reminded me so much of my childhood with his sad birthday party and how adults think they can just replace a beloved pet that I literally cried through the first two chapters。 I just wanted to give him a hug and tell him it would be okay。

I absolutely adore the way that Neil Gaiman makes magic fact。 There is no explanation, no fanfare, no fantasy: in his books the magic simply is, and his story telling is so smooth that you take it in stride and accept it at face value。 I LOVED this book。 I truly wish I could read it again for the first time。

WOW。 Stunningly brilliant。

So incredibly creepy。 One chapter gave me nightmares (probably because I read right before bed) and I had to set the book down for a couple days to reset。 It's a wonderful supernatural horror tale on a back road in the country。 So incredibly creepy。 One chapter gave me nightmares (probably because I read right before bed) and I had to set the book down for a couple days to reset。 It's a wonderful supernatural horror tale on a back road in the country。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 This book is written very well, it’s a great story! My rating is based on my overall enjoyment of the book, and I don’t believe this kind of story is something I would read again。 It was a very quick read and entertaining in the meanwhile :)

So difficult to rate this story。 It was beautiful。 It was bizarre。 It was eloquent。 It was uncomfortable。

。。。more

There's so much hidden in the narrative of this book, that I'm sure, I haven't really gotten a grip on the depth of everything。 A seemingly simple childhood story, but nothing is truly what it seems。 There's so much hidden in the narrative of this book, that I'm sure, I haven't really gotten a grip on the depth of everything。 A seemingly simple childhood story, but nothing is truly what it seems。 。。。more

This book is the perfect mix of childhood remembrance, growing up, and the hazy, blurry cloud that mixes memory with fantasy。 Fear, fun, sadness, hope。 What is real and what is not? Everything I read about this book was true。 It is indeed the book to read when you have forgotten what it is to be a child。

Kelly Herper

Not sure why, but I loved it。 Such a wonderfully magical little story。

I love the mysterious worlds of Neil Gaiman’s books, but this one felt a little bit much for me。 I prefer the Graveyard book over this。

Alyssa Lentz

This has some really beautiful things to say, and of course the way Neil Gaiman writes is lovely and whimsical and makes you believe in the magic he writes about。

This was a very short book and felt like it could have used more of a plot。 I was definitely disappointed。

A hallucinogenic memory of intense memories in a landscape of magical realism as experienced in the dream of childhood when such fantasies can be seen and believed and felt。 This is a moving and imaginative novella。

Loved this one。 Creative story beautifully narrated by the author。 I have started and stopped several books by this author previously but this one captured my interest。 Made me think about childhood, fairytales, monsters, memories, and perspective。 Enjoyed every minute of the audiobook。
