Summary

In the spirit of Steve Jobs and Moneyball, Elon Musk is both an illuminating and authorized look at the extraordinary life of one of Silicon Valley’s most exciting, unpredictable, and ambitious entrepreneurs—a real-life Tony Stark—and a fascinating exploration of the renewal of American invention and its new “makers。”

Elon Musk spotlights the technology and vision of Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur and innovator behind SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity, who sold one of his Internet companies, PayPal, for $1。5 billion。 Ashlee Vance captures the full spectacle and arc of the genius’s life and work, from his tumultuous upbringing in South Africa and flight to the United States to his dramatic technical innovations and entrepreneurial pursuits。

Vance uses Musk’s story to explore one of the pressing questions of our age: can the nation of inventors and creators who led the modern world for a century still compete in an age of fierce global competition? He argues that Musk—one of the most unusual and striking figures in American business history—is a contemporary, visionary amalgam of legendary inventors and industrialists including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Howard Hughes, and Steve Jobs。 More than any other entrepreneur today, Musk has dedicated his energies and his own vast fortune to inventing a future that is as rich and far-reaching as the visionaries of the golden age of science-fiction fantasy。

Thorough and insightful, Elon Musk brings to life a technology industry that is rapidly and dramatically changing by examining the life of one of its most powerful and influential titans。

A great piece of journalism that encapsulates the core drive of Elon Musk。 A fascinating journey from early startups like zip2 and paypal to his passionate engineering endeavors in Tesla and SpaceX。 If you want to understand the fanaticism of people you worship Elon, this book will convert you。 This book will inspire you if you have a deep interest in engineering and science。

I thoroughly enjoyed the book。 I felt like it was well-balanced, making Mr。 Musk neither a hero nor a villain。 The author followed his career journey and along the way we learn about the human being behind the persona。

This is the book I'll definitely read many times!! Very worth reading! It lets you know being Elon is not an easy thing。 This book shows u how his personality, friendships, are integrated to build his empire。 During some pages, it made me feel kinda emotional, like how he works so hard to keep his company from falling & how he keeps innovating great things。 Also there are a lot of good informations in this book, about batteries, rockets, EV and more。It's a very amazing book! What Elon has accomplished is stunning。 He let nothing stand in his way and only sought out achieved exactly what he wanted without compromise on the end product。 Great read

It was a great read。 Ashlee Vance did a good job on collecting good pieces of information about Musk's life until 2017。 A lot has happened since then, however this book gives us a great understanding about the man behind all these massive achievements that is making the world believe that the EV's will take over and change the concept of a car as we knew until now。 Not only this, Musk is on all fronts of sustainability, with Solarcity growing at a fast pace, with Space X proving that the interpl It was a great read。 Ashlee Vance did a good job on collecting good pieces of information about Musk's life until 2017。 A lot has happened since then, however this book gives us a great understanding about the man behind all these massive achievements that is making the world believe that the EV's will take over and change the concept of a car as we knew until now。 Not only this, Musk is on all fronts of sustainability, with Solarcity growing at a fast pace, with Space X proving that the interplanetary travel is not fiction anymore and will be reality sooner than most of us think。 The book also gives us an understanding of Musk's the modus operandi to achieve all his goals and visions。 For some he is a genius, for others he is just another Silicon Valley rich boy who likes attention and to show off。 However, no one can deny that he is achieving what most thought impossible。 。。。more

This book is obviously also a marketing effort。 But。Well written and compelling。 The author is good at making the character fascinating。 The subject already is, but the author is still good。The Elon of this biography has many merits and many things to learn from: Work ethic, Perseverance and Understanding when you are right despite what the detractors say and Learning to plan well。Elon never seems to stop and a touch of haughtiness seems right。 Maybe in this simulation it's just right。 Being Ica This book is obviously also a marketing effort。 But。Well written and compelling。 The author is good at making the character fascinating。 The subject already is, but the author is still good。The Elon of this biography has many merits and many things to learn from: Work ethic, Perseverance and Understanding when you are right despite what the detractors say and Learning to plan well。Elon never seems to stop and a touch of haughtiness seems right。 Maybe in this simulation it's just right。 Being Icarus is wrong, but Icarus was wrong because he didn't know physics。 Elon knows it and never seems to sin in hubris。 At least, that's what we get from the book。 Other things I learned is that you shouldn't be afraid to be daring and that you should always stay at the edge of tech。 You always have to experiment and do things that serve people。 If Elon had "lost," no one would have remembered him。 But he won and we read his biography。 If we are in a simulation then we all need to learn something about the rules of this simulation 。。。more

In the last three weeks that I have been reading this book, I have spoken to many technology geeks and start-up enthusiasts about their opinion on Musk。 The verdict is unanimous。 Musk is probably a great visionary and technical genius but a not so great people leader who can't lead technology firms like a Jobs, Cook or Gates。 Ashlee Vance's biography manages to convey the same message in an almost crisp but sufficiently detailed volume。 I must say that rigor of primary research, shadowing and fi In the last three weeks that I have been reading this book, I have spoken to many technology geeks and start-up enthusiasts about their opinion on Musk。 The verdict is unanimous。 Musk is probably a great visionary and technical genius but a not so great people leader who can't lead technology firms like a Jobs, Cook or Gates。 Ashlee Vance's biography manages to convey the same message in an almost crisp but sufficiently detailed volume。 I must say that rigor of primary research, shadowing and fieldwork that Vance may have put into writing the book would have made him at that time the singularly most obsessed with Musk on the planet。 Vance's hardwork reflects well in the book and as a reader you get a good glimpse into the Tony Stark-esque world of Musk。 Even more commendable is the style of writing and structure of the book。 Some of the sections leading up to Tesla's near bankruptcy in 2008 and SpaceX's multiple launch failures at Kwaj read like a page turning thriller。 Vance keeps shifting gears in the body of the book between the two major firms Musk works for and closes the book out with a chapter tying it all together and a future orientation。 Indian readers can consider it analogous to Rang De Basanti's screenplay。Although Musk's story by itself and his meteoric rise in the last two decades is a great story by itself and could easily have been science fiction a century back (and probably partially even today), the subtle hero for me is Vance's style and analysis of Musk。 My second key takeaway is the belief in audacious thinking and the power of pure execution in reaching seemingly unachievable and super ambitious targets。 Reading the well crafted for layman technical details of the book has urged me to explore more about space, electric vehicles and a whole bunch of other technology related topics。 I would recommend this book to principally two kinds of readers。 Firstly, the start-up enthusiasts who are looking to learn about the success and failure of a startup journey and secondly the young science and tech freaks who are looking to understand space, EVs and renewable energy。 I can only hypothesize but had I read this book six years ago when it was first released I may have stuck around in electrical engineering and life would probably been very different。 。。。more
