Summary

A striking, powerful, and moving love story following an ambitious lawyer who experiences an astonishing vision that could change her life forever。

Where do you see yourself in five years?

When Type-A Manhattan lawyer Dannie Kohan is asked this question at the most important interview of her career, she has a meticulously crafted answer at the ready。 Later, after nailing her interview and accepting her boyfriend’s marriage proposal, Dannie goes to sleep knowing she is right on track to achieve her five-year plan。

But when she wakes up, she’s suddenly in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man。 The television news is on in the background, and she can just make out the scrolling date。 It’s the same night—December 15—but 2025, five years in the future。

After a very intense, shocking hour, Dannie wakes again, at the brink of midnight, back in 2020。 She can’t shake what has happened。 It certainly felt much more than merely a dream, but she isn’t the kind of person who believes in visions。 That nonsense is only charming coming from free-spirited types, like her lifelong best friend, Bella。 Determined to ignore the odd experience, she files it away in the back of her mind。

That is, until four-and-a-half years later, when by chance Dannie meets the very same man from her long-ago vision。

Brimming with joy and heartbreak, In Five Years is an unforgettable love story that reminds us of the power of loyalty, friendship, and the unpredictable nature of destiny。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I listened to this book。 It’s ok—Dani has a premonition about best friend, Bella’s fiancé, Aaron。 It’s not until the end of the book that she realizes the pull she experience with him was not love, but grief。 I could see how this book would unfold。 However, I did not expect Bella to give Dani the apartment or that Dani and Aaron would part。 As a reader, I felt sorry for long-suffering David as he seemed like a good guy with a bad deal。 The book ends with Dani perhaps finding lasting love with Be I listened to this book。 It’s ok—Dani has a premonition about best friend, Bella’s fiancé, Aaron。 It’s not until the end of the book that she realizes the pull she experience with him was not love, but grief。 I could see how this book would unfold。 However, I did not expect Bella to give Dani the apartment or that Dani and Aaron would part。 As a reader, I felt sorry for long-suffering David as he seemed like a good guy with a bad deal。 The book ends with Dani perhaps finding lasting love with Bella’s oncologist。 Just ok—the turns at the end gave interest to the book。 。。。more

This one hour that Dannie awakes in was everything that kept this story going and I just wanted to keep reading until it all came together。 I did not like how Serle did it。 What I mean by that is that she threw curve ball after curve ball and I didn't see it coming until it was already done。 Oh I just held that book when I finished and I did my hardest not to let the tears flow while sitting on a beautiful beach。 This one hour that Dannie awakes in was everything that kept this story going and I just wanted to keep reading until it all came together。 I did not like how Serle did it。 What I mean by that is that she threw curve ball after curve ball and I didn't see it coming until it was already done。 Oh I just held that book when I finished and I did my hardest not to let the tears flow while sitting on a beautiful beach。 。。。more

Didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did。 Very easy quick read。 Satisfying ending different from what you might expect。 Loved the authors perceptions regarding differences between California and New York and the way the city of New York was portrayed。 Not a lot of substance here but a really enjoyable story that starts from a different premise。 Didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did。 Very easy quick read。 Satisfying ending different from what you might expect。 Loved the authors perceptions regarding differences between California and New York and the way the city of New York was portrayed。 Not a lot of substance here but a really enjoyable story that starts from a different premise。 。。。more

Not what I expected。 After the last few chapters, you're just like what happened? The whole book leads you one place 。。。 and kinda slowly and then, BAM! A bunch of stuff that feels out of left field。 It was a quick read, but disappointing。 I didn't need it to be a happy ever after thing because that became implausible。 But I wasn't sure who the person at the end of the book really was。 Not what I expected。 After the last few chapters, you're just like what happened? I enjoyed it。。。 kind of。 For an adult fiction it very much felt like what i thought romance and fiction writing were like when I was a teenager。 The characters felt very one dimensional, and some of the descriptions of New York felt like they came from someone who had never step foot there, only seen it on TV and in movies。。 I gave it 3 stars because i thought the ending wrapped up nicely and gave a good perspective on how knowing the full situation can really affect how you take in a story。

Every minute is planned and scheduled in Danielle Kohan’s life。 Judgmental, smart, and generous Dannie is best friends since childhood with beautiful, spontaneous, and artistic Bella。 On the night of her engagement to investment banker David Rosen and interview as a corporate lawyer at a law firm that she has coveted since childhood, she wakes up five years in the future engaged to Aaron。 He is a stranger but it does not feel like it as their chemistry is off the charts。 When she wakes up, she i Every minute is planned and scheduled in Danielle Kohan’s life。 Judgmental, smart, and generous Dannie is best friends since childhood with beautiful, spontaneous, and artistic Bella。 On the night of her engagement to investment banker David Rosen and interview as a corporate lawyer at a law firm that she has coveted since childhood, she wakes up five years in the future engaged to Aaron。 He is a stranger but it does not feel like it as their chemistry is off the charts。 When she wakes up, she is back in her old life。 Dannie meets Aaron four-and-a-half years later and life becomes very complicated。 A story of friendship, love, complacency, loss, passion for work, and illness。 The loss is tragic and heartbreaking。 However, I felt a disconnect and lack of empathy with the main character as she does not appear to realistically acknowledge her feelings。 Where is her spontaneity and joie de vivre? The jealously rankled。 I loved Bella, who has such a big heart。 As the date approached, it appears that the conclusion is inevitable, but it did not jibe with the actions of the characters and left me with a certain distaste。 I did like the last scene though。 3。5 stars。 。。。more

Honestly, I was not ready for this journey。 I'm not going to spoil the story, but it definitely wasn't what I went in expecting and I'm glad I let the story unfold because I liked it much more than I thought I would。 Honestly, I was not ready for this journey。 I'm not going to spoil the story, but it definitely wasn't what I went in expecting and I'm glad I let the story unfold because I liked it much more than I thought I would。 。。。more

Honestly this book felt like a 3/5 for at least the first half but I felt that the turn it took in tone and the way the story moved slightly unexpectedly put it closer to a 4。 The voice isn’t my favorite writing style but it has charm, and it’s refreshing to read a book you think is going to be a romantic comedy that actually hits closer to a celebration of enduring female friendship。 Overall, a pretty quick read that I’m glad I came across。

I thought this was going to be a cute easy romance, but I wouldn’t say it was。 She’s a career woman who lives a “normal” life and then she dreams about a night 5 years into the future, then she meets that guy and thing happen。 I did like the book, but it wasn’t one that stood out。The ending wasn’t how I predicted (which was good)。 Maybe I want to give this a 2 ⭐️ tbh

Rebecca Serle has a beautiful writing voice。 However, I didn’t really like the main character Dannie。 I think that was part of the point though, she always lived a bit muted compared to her best friend who lived out loud。 Dannie’s friendship with her best friend was told beautifully but even more so towards the end when you see the characters realize the roles they held each other in weren’t really what they seemed。 I would try another book from this author because I liked her storytelling。

I enjoyed reading this, and always love a story based in NYC。 I will like her writing style and look forward to reading more of her books。 The story spans five years, and this was done well for such a short book。 There are elements to the story that are intriguing, however I found it hard to connect to some of the characters in the story and dynamics of their relationships。 I like that it is not your typical "love" story and I found myself staying up late to finish it。 I just kept waiting for th I enjoyed reading this, and always love a story based in NYC。 I will like her writing style and look forward to reading more of her books。 The story spans five years, and this was done well for such a short book。 There are elements to the story that are intriguing, however I found it hard to connect to some of the characters in the story and dynamics of their relationships。 I like that it is not your typical "love" story and I found myself staying up late to finish it。 I just kept waiting for that pinnacle moment。。。。not sure it resonated with me in that way。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wonderful book! Such an interesting concept。 Could not put this book down。 It’s really interesting how she sees this unknown premonition of the future, and how it gets there。 I know I’ve said previously that I don’t like cancer as a plot point books, but it really fit well here。 I liked Dani a lot as a main character。 I’m not sure I entirely believe why they had sex at the end, but it did make for an interesting premise。 Megan Hilty read wonderfully! Would highly recommend the audiobook。

This is a book you finish in a week end, because you are swept up into it。 Its a love story, but not the one you think t is, and its about fate, but not how you think it is。 And its emotional, and colorful。 I will look for more books by Rebecca Serle。

This was a book that started out in one direction and kept turning the corner in another direction。 It was happy, sad, exciting and intriguing。 It left me feeling sad for the two last people that were involved in tangled up lives。 I liked it and breezed right through it。 It is worth the read。

This book was so wonderful! A friendship with a best friend that has spanned 25 years, what appears to be a perfect relationship with a fiancé, a new guy named Aaron and a new promotion as a senior associate on a huge corporate case。 What happens when your best friend gets a diagnosis that you weren’t expecting and the happiness of what you thought it was, turns to tragedy? A story that reminds that you friendship and love transcend all else。 A quick beautiful read。

Damn! This turned out to be so much better than I expected, so much better than how it started off- it’s not lost on me what an ironic thing that is to say, given the main theme of accepting that you can’t predict the future。 Speaking of which, I’m sure Serle is loving that her book, which she set in 2020-2025, now exists in an alternate universe in which no global pandemic took place since she took for granted that the years to come would continue as they always have。 Funny how life turns out, Damn!
