Summary

"A heart-pounding roller coaster ride。"--Tami Hoag, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Boy

A serial killer and his copycat are locked in a violent game of cat and mouse。 Can DI Anjelica Henley stop them before it's too late?

On the day she returns to active duty with the Serial Crimes Unit, Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley is called to a crime scene。 Dismembered body parts from two victims have been found by the river。

The modus operandi bears a striking resemblance to Peter Olivier, the notorious Jigsaw Killer, who has spent the past two years behind bars。 When he learns that someone is co-opting his grisly signature--the arrangement of victims' limbs in puzzle-piece shapes--he decides to take matters into his own hands。

As the body count rises, DI Anjelica Henley is faced with an unspeakable new threat。 Can she apprehend the copycat killer before Olivier finds a way to get to him first? Or will she herself become the next victim?

Drawing on her experience as a criminal attorney, debut novelist Nadine Matheson delivers the page-turning crime novel of the year。 Taut, vivid and addictively sinister, The Jigsaw Man will leave you breathless until the very last page。

I love a grisly serial killer novel and this one does the trick。 I know that Henley wouldn't be my friend but that doesn't mean I don't want her to be my friend。 I love a grisly serial killer novel and this one does the trick。 I know that Henley wouldn't be my friend but that doesn't mean I don't want her to be my friend。 。。。more

This was a solid procedural mystery/thriller。 Set in London, it follows a Black detective, who is recently back in the field after a not-yet-disclosed traumatic experience, and her trainee partner as they hunt for a copycat serial killer。 I enjoyed the intra-team dynamics in this book more than I usually do in crime novels。 (Usually I'm more along the lines of: I don't care about your relationships with your colleagues, give me the mystery!) I do think there are some things to be said about how women characters are used in this story to enable/justify/excuse awful decisions by male characters 。。。 but I've found most books in the mystery/thriller genre can offend my feminist sensibilities so I digress。 ;)One thing that I found *very* interesting as a U。S。-based reader was that there were NO GUNS in this book。 Again: NO GUNS! So U。K。 I honestly felt like I was reading an alternate-reality sci-fi novel at times。 How would this investigation have differed if everyone had guns?! The detective even put a "stab vest" on at one point。 I was definitely intrigued by this gun-free world of crime。 。。。more

What a good, twisty debut thriller。 Matheson struck an excellent balance between procedural and suspense, and I'm looking forward to what's next for DI Anjelica Henley。 What a good, twisty debut thriller。 Matheson struck an excellent balance between procedural and suspense, and I'm looking forward to what's next for DI Anjelica Henley。 。。。more

If this book isn't Goodreads thriller of the year I'm going to be mad。 This book is bruuutaaall。 If you aren't into graphic thrillers then you probably shouldn't read this。 It reminds me of The Alienist in terms of how graphic it was。 I seriously did not want to put this down。 It just gives you one blow after another。 It is a crime thriller so there aren't a lot of twist or psychological stuff going on。 But there are multiple serial killers and they are into dismemberment。 There are a lot of con If this book isn't Goodreads thriller of the year I'm going to be mad。 This book is bruuutaaall。 If you aren't into graphic thrillers then you probably shouldn't read this。 It reminds me of The Alienist in terms of how graphic it was。 I seriously did not want to put this down。 It just gives you one blow after another。 It is a crime thriller so there aren't a lot of twist or psychological stuff going on。 But there are multiple serial killers and they are into dismemberment。 There are a lot of content warnings with this one。 Rape, marital Affairs, graphic murders, racism, and I am sure there are more。 But if you like these kinds of crime books then you'll love this one! Nadine Matheson's debut crime novel is The Jigsaw Man。 That perfectly creepy cover hints at what's hiding inside。。。Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley is just back to active duty after surviving an attack from serial killer Peter Olivier。 He's behind bars in a maximum security prison。 But the case she's called to seems to mimic his crimes - the dismembering of his victims。 The brand he left on his victims is there as well。 Does he have an acolyte on the outside? A copycat? What a great lead character Matheson has created。 I liked Anjelica from the get go。 She's highly intelligent, driven, respected, but flawed as well。 Although the physical wounds from Olivier's attack have healed, she's still emotionally scarred and her personal life is a bit of a mess。 Matheson has also built a solid cast of supporting players in the Serial Crimes Unit。 I was quite drawn to trainee DC Salim Ramouter。 And I heartily disliked Anjelica's husband and mother in law。In the beginning I thought this was a second book for this crew, but it was indeed the first。 Matheson does a great job building the characters, their history and their relationships in such a way that they all felt quite established already。 They're a crew that work the dark cases。The plot isn't straight forward, taking a number of turns that kept me guessing。 There are quite a few suspects, victims and aliases, so listen carefully to keep track of everyone。 The police procedures hit all the right notes and are believable。 My pet peeve is convenient clues that are dropped in a protagonist's lap。 Not the case in The Jigsaw Man - Henley and her team have to work to put the pieces together。 (Yeah, that one was on purpose!)I chose to listen to The Jigsaw Man。 The reader was Davine Henry。 She has a lovely gravely, touched by honey tone to her voice。 Her speaking timbre is low, easily drawing the listener into the book。 Her British accent is easy to understand, she enunciates well and her speaking pace is measured。 Henry captures the plot and emotions with her voice, interpreting Matheson's work very well。 The voice for Anjelica absolutely suits the mental image I had created。 Her voice changes for other characters, but the scariest hands down was for the killer Olivier - it just exuded evil。 Gentle readers, this one may not be for you as the crimes are quite brutal and graphic。 (Think Silence of the Lambs) Matheson is herself a criminal defense attorney and the plot and characters definitely benefit from this inside knowledge。 I've got my fingers crossed that Matheson is hard at work on another Anjelica Henley book! (The Jigsaw Man has also been optioned for television。) 。。。more

The Jigsaw Man is a police procedural about a copycat serial killer。Suffice to say this is not a great book before bed。 Peter Olivier is serving seven life sentences for killing a bunch of people and chopping up their bodies。 He was arrested after nearly killing Detective Hadley and she’s been on modified duty ever since。 Imagine her surprise that she will be leading the investigation into several murders that appear to be inspired by Olivier’s。 This book is terrifying。 I figured out who the cop The Jigsaw Man is a police procedural about a copycat serial killer。Suffice to say this is not a great book before bed。 Peter Olivier is serving seven life sentences for killing a bunch of people and chopping up their bodies。 He was arrested after nearly killing Detective Hadley and she’s been on modified duty ever since。 Imagine her surprise that she will be leading the investigation into several murders that appear to be inspired by Olivier’s。 This book is terrifying。 I figured out who the copycat was well before the end and find it hard to believe the police didn’t seem to have put it together。 Yet the book was scarier because of it so maybe it works。 Also, while it wasn’t a major topic, I did appreciate the way the novel included racial bias into the story, like Hedley being certain her credentials were visible while walking into police HQ so she wasn’t stopped by the guards (character is a POC)。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 A bit slow paced, gave way too much filler and non important information about the main characters personal life that didn’t tie in at all, but it was written well, likeable well developed characters, and a pretty good whodunnit。 Not exactly what I was hoping for, but a solid entertaining read。

Deep down she knows the only way to do that is to come face to face with her psychological nemesis The Jigsaw Man。 Will her life and/or psyche survive, check out The Jigsaw Man and find out。I really enjoyed The Jigsaw Man, it is an excellent police procedural thriller。  I am not a huge fan of police procedurals because I find that they can get bogged down with the technical details, and this book did have too many of those technical police elements for my liking as well, but I was completely invested in the messiness of DCI Henley's personal and professional life, so that was enough to keep me reading。 The Jigsaw Man reaches its peak when those inside the law enforcement and those outside law enforcement took it upon themselves to catch a killer。 I highly recommend reading this one。 。。。more

3。5 stars really。 This book is entertaining, but I couldn’t help feeling that this was Seven, Silence of the Lambs, and even elements of Patrica Cornwell’s stories all rolled into one。 The serial killer genre is definitely tough to try and provide a new creative spin, but it is entertaining if not a little long。
