Summary

Updating Tolkien’s classic epic fantasy trilogy The Lord of the Rings with a fresh new package for Book 1, The Fellowship of the Ring

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others。 But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him。 After many ages, it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit。

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the ring to his care。 Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose。

A re-read。 Just as good as the first read!

Didn’t expect much from the audiobook performance since it’s from 1990。 I was so wrong。 It’s incredible。 The narrator sings the many songs in the book and makes the story come to life。

I think I love this more than the movie because of the songs。

3 starsAlright, before you get your pitchforks out, here me out on this one。 If I was rating this book in 1970, I'd give it a 5。 If I was rating it in 2000, a 4。 Me in my 30's, in 2021? A 3。 Here's why。We have learned from the 10 books I DNF'd last month that this style of writing is not for me。 Had I not been a fan of the movies (again, put your pitchforks away y'all), I probably would have DNF'd this as well。 It meanders。 A LOT。 If this first book was written today, an editor would have EASILY 3 starsAlright, before you get your pitchforks out, here me out on this one。 If I was rating this book in 1970, I'd give it a 5。 If I was rating it in 2000, a 4。 Me in my 30's, in 2021? A 3。 Here's why。We have learned from the 10 books I DNF'd last month that this style of writing is not for me。 Had I not been a fan of the movies (again, put your pitchforks away y'all), I probably would have DNF'd this as well。 It meanders。 A LOT。 If this first book was written today, an editor would have EASILY told him to cut 60% of what we have here。 And I daresay I agree。 HOWEVER, that is with the caveat of, I've had the last 30 years to read these great sweeping fantasy tales。 Something that the readers when this book was published did not have。 So yeah, I'd say that this book rated based off of when it was written would be much higher, but I have things I want to talk about。 First off, you know it's coming because I'm a woman in my 30's, WHERE MY GIRLS AT?!?! Really though。 A quick internet search will tell you that in ALL of the Lord of The Rings (not just Fellowship) there are 11 women in the series AND THAT'S COUNTING A SPIDER Y'ALL! I couldn't find a list of ALL male characters but just a list of the "notable" male characters contained north of 50 men。 The three women of note from this book (I'd say) are Arwen, Goldberry, and Galadriel。 All of whom are described in various ways of saying 'beautiful' and 'perfect' and 'powerful'。 Which is fine in and of itself but dang。 Not only do we only get 3 women, but it's basically just the same woman three times over? Cool。 Now, further research on my end has informed me that the women of LoTR are all a sort of love-letter to Tolkien's wife (with the exception of Eowyn but we'll wait until book 2's review to talk about her as she hasn't hit the page yet), which I guess would make sense。 Also, the time period in which he grew up, the war torn world he lived in。 Like, I GET IT。 This would have made sense for the 1960's。 But it doesn't feel right for today。 And I'm not reading it in 1970。 Alright? Second。 Who the actual fuck is Tom Bombadil and what kind of drugs was Tolkien on when he wrote that entire section of the book? Wait, pitchforks down。 I know you purists are all about Bombadil and how he represents this older magics of Middle Earth and in some forms he and Goldberry represent Adam and Eve (because Tolkien was so religious his wife had to convert to Catholicism before they could marry) and you feel that's all SUPER important to the plot of the next two books。 I get it。 But I honestly just don't care。 It was clunky。 It slowed down the pacing of the book and made me want to stop reading immediately。 This whole section just reminds me of me trying to read Alice in Wonderland and if that wasn't an absolute shit-show, nothing ever will be。 The POEMS。 There were a lot of them。 Some of them completely in languages I don't understand。 Again, I grasp the concept that Tolkien was actually more of a linguist first, author second so it would make sense for him to create a language and write a book using that language and have that super weird superiority flex over all of us。 But y'all, I ain't here to learn another language。 I'm here to read a kick ass fantasy tale。 Did I get that? Maybe。 Also, do you like my inclusion of the word "ain't" while talking about language? Here's the real bit of honesty。 I read this via audiobook (the 'ONLY unabridged version' according to the description) and if I'd read it physically I'd have skipped every single poem and song。 I give zero fucks about them。 Lastly I think this story falters by being A) broken into three parts and B) so long it needed to be broken into three parts。 Ya feel me? There's a lot to be said of story structure and how it makes a book enjoyable to read and when you chop that book into three parts, well, it's not quite as enjoyable。 Again, modern day, a lot of this would have been edited out。 And I wonder if this had been edited down and published in one book if it would have better served the reader。 All of that being said, I do plan to continue reading this series。 I did enjoy reading the parts that actually moved the story forward。 And I have heaps of respect and awe for both this author and his collected works and how they changed the fantasy publishing game forever。 And from the research I have done I do think that Tolkien was one of those greats that will be hard to match in terms of his level of intelligence and the mark he's left on the world。 But none of that means this book is 2021 perfect。 And I have to rate it based on that。 Cover 3; Characters 4; plot 3; pace 2; writing 3; enjoyment 3。 For further clarity I rated the cover based off of the first single-volume edition (1968)。 。。。more

I don’t know why I was so scared to read this。 This is GOOD writing。 I love the characters, the story, the world。 The geography and lineage descriptions get a little confusing, but I get that it’s important and helps to make LOTR what it is。 And it’s not overwhelming and boring like other books (cough cough Dune)。I’m also very impressed with how close the movie follows the book。 The character portrayals and set, and even many of the lines are spot on。 How could I not love this book when it match I don’t know why I was so scared to read this。 This is GOOD writing。 I love the characters, the story, the world。 The geography and lineage descriptions get a little confusing, but I get that it’s important and helps to make LOTR what it is。 And it’s not overwhelming and boring like other books (cough cough Dune)。I’m also very impressed with how close the movie follows the book。 The character portrayals and set, and even many of the lines are spot on。 How could I not love this book when it matches the movie I’ve loved for so long??!! 。。。more

How does one review such a classic?I first read The Hobbit in high school, then began this book。 At that time, I never finished, and I've been intimidated to try ever since。 However, I finally gave it another try, and I really enjoyed it。 It definitely shows its age, but it's an enduring classic for a reason。Council of Elrond may have put me to sleep though。 Also, needs more women。 ;) How does one review such a classic?I first read The Hobbit in high school, then began this book。 At that time, I never finished, and I've been intimidated to try ever since。 However, I finally gave it another try, and I really enjoyed it。 It definitely shows its age, but it's an enduring classic for a reason。Council of Elrond may have put me to sleep though。 Also, needs more women。 ;) 。。。more

I gave this book my highest rating of 5 stars (rating scale in bio)This is my first read through of the Lord of the Rings。 Because I have always been a big fan of the films, I have wanted to read the books。 And, wow。 I was not let down。 As to be expected, the book had much more details compared to the films。 Almost an overwhelming amount of detail。 There were times that I wanted to just skip ahead a few paragraphs just to make the time go by faster。 But just as the quest that is being made by th I gave this book my highest rating of 5 stars (rating scale in bio)This is my first read through of the Lord of the Rings。 Because I have always been a big fan of the films, I have wanted to read the books。 And, wow。 I was not let down。 As to be expected, the book had much more details compared to the films。 Almost an overwhelming amount of detail。 There were times that I wanted to just skip ahead a few paragraphs just to make the time go by faster。 But just as the quest that is being made by the Fellowship, I chose to read every word and submerge myself in the details just for the chance to be able to say that I read it in its entirety。 Because I did this, I felt as if I was joined right along with the journeymen。I have listened to many fans and critics of this trilogy (and yes I have learned that some would be offended at the fact that I call it a trilogy since Tolkien wrote this as one book)。 I understand that some people are not into the quest trope。 Being that I am new to the book-loving, bookish, anything-to-do-with-reading world, this is the first book that I have read that has a quest trope。 And I must say that I am all about it。 I will say that I am not the biggest Frodo fan。 I feel as though he is just a place holder and that all of the other characters have much more depth to them。 On the other hand, I do connect with this kind of character; being surrounded by favor, guidance, loyalty, friendship。 I just want feel as if Frodo deserves these things from his old and new friends。I allowed myself to take my time to read this book and have read others books within the duration of me completing this book。 I took almost three months to read this book。 I want to complete the next book in less time to that I can complete all three books before this year's halfway point in June。There is a film on HBO Max called Tolkien that is about the life of the author。 This film brought a much deeper appreciation for the words in this book。 Tolkien was a brilliant mind and what a contribution he made to the world of literature。I do recommend this book to any kind of reader no matter if you're a fast or slow reader, a new or seasoned reader。 I have highlighted a few lines in this book that hold a truth that is very real and valid in my life and I'm sure for many others as well。 。。。more
