Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition。 Literally meaning “pictures of the floating world,” ukiyo-e was a particular genre of art that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries and came to characterize the Western world’s visual idea of Japan。 In many ways images of hedonism, ukiyo-e scenes often represented the bright lights and attractions of Edo (modern-day Tokyo): beautiful women, actors and wrestlers, city life, and spectacular landscapes。

Though he captured a variety of subjects, Hiroshige was most famous for landscapes, with a final masterpiece series known as “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” (1856–1858), which depicted various scenes of the city through the seasons, from bustling shopping streets to splendid cherry orchards。

This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo。 It pairs each of the 120 illustrations with a description, allowing readers to immerse themselves in these beautiful, vibrant vistas that became paradigms of Japonisme and inspired Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Art Nouveau artists alike, from Vincent van Gogh to James McNeill Whistler。

One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景 Meisho Edo Hyakkei) is a series of 119 ukiyo-e prints begun and largely completed by the Japanese artist Hiroshige (1797–1858)。 The prints were first published in serialized form in 1856–59。 It was tremendously popular。 Hiroshige painted in the style of the Utagawa school, a 19th-century popular style in woodblock prints, much favoured during his lifetime。

The photos are vibrant along with captions that invoke the senses。 For me I believe in law of attraction and visualization。 Although I have been to Japan once I would like to live there in the future so I feel these images really give me a mental view of what more I would see in Japan。 Throughout the captions for each image Trede and Bichl I have not read all of it yet since it it more of an art book with captions but I was just super excited to share how wonderful and eye-catching this book is! A book of art prints that is a work of art in its own right。 It comes in a beautiful presentation box covered in printed silk。 The book itself is a Japanese stab binding, with a silk cover。 The images within it are wonderful, and are reproduced to the highest quality; and the commentary is fascinating and well read。 Whether you are a fan of Hiroshige, Japanese art, Japanese culture or beautiful books, you should try to get your hands on a copy of this。
