Summary

In a novel-in-verse that brims with grief and love, National Book Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness, and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives。

Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic。 But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people…

In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash。

Separated by distance—and Papi’s secrets—the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered。

And then, when it seems like they’ve lost everything of their father, they learn of each other。

Beautifully written。Thanks for including views from both sides。 I thoroughly enjoyed it。 Anyone who has ever experienced a tragedy could truly appreciate this book。 It validates all the feelings that come out during a time of mourning a loss。

Clap When You Land is a gut-wrenching, beautifully-written story。 It tells of a family being ripped apart by the dad's tragic, violent death, which in turn rebirths the family into something entirely new。 Some of the more magical elements are about the past, which we don't experience as readers except through memories。 We never meet the dad, for example, but we know his character by the end through the eyes of his daughters。 But I didn't really connect with this novel, which disappointed me。 Clap When You Land is a gut-wrenching, beautifully-written story。 It tells of a family being ripped apart by the dad's tragic, violent death, which in turn rebirths the family into something entirely new。 Some of the more magical elements are about the past, which we don't experience as readers except through memories。 We never meet the dad, for example, but we know his character by the end through the eyes of his daughters。 But I didn't really connect with this novel, which disappointed me。 。。。more

TRIGGER WARNINGS: SEXUAL ASSAULT, DEATH*spoilers*Well。 I don't want to say I'm disappointed but I expected a lot more。I really enjoyed the story of Yahaira and Camino but I really wanted more depth。 More depth about their grieve and also about Yahaira's chess and Camino's swimming。 Of course, there were passages were we got story but I just didn't have the feeling it was enough。I really wanted to see when they had their breakdown you know。 There are just days in which everything that hunts and h TRIGGER WARNINGS: SEXUAL ASSAULT, DEATH*spoilers*Well。 I don't want to say I'm disappointed but I expected a lot more。I really enjoyed the story of Yahaira and Camino but I really wanted more depth。 More depth about their grieve and also about Yahaira's chess and Camino's swimming。 Of course, there were passages were we got story but I just didn't have the feeling it was enough。I really wanted to see when they had their breakdown you know。 There are just days in which everything that hunts and hurts you crashes down and then you sit on the floor in the shower and sob and cry your frickin eyes out。 To say the truth that hunts you。 If it's about the loss of someone you loved (like in this case) or that someone hurt you in an unforgettable way。 In the end there was this big show down and a happy end but I don't know。 I wanted this break down because I can say from personal experience, only then the healing starts。 But we are all different so maybe that only works by myself。And I wasn't a big fan of the whole verse style which was actually the factor which made me buy the book。 Still it was okay and I read it really quickly。 。。。more

Compelling story and storytelling。

A passionate story about tragedy that deals in multiple topics all written in verse。 Though I wish the characters had deeper personalities and I found it difficult to keep track of whose POV I was reading。And I want to emphasize that three stars from me is not a bad rating, this is more of a 3。5 honestly。

i really enjoyed this! the first half dragged a bit, but the story really finds itself when the sisters finally meet。 sometimes, it was hard to distinguish whose pov we were in, even with two audiobook narrators。 the afterward mentions that the story was originally going to be told in one pov, and i think you can tell。 but despite this i did like it better than the poet x。 the found family trope always gets me。

I think the concept of the story was good。 I just didn’t like the way it was set out。 Like a poem or that type of writing didn’t resonate with me and I found I couldn’t get into the story which was a shame cause I think i would’ve really liked it if it weren’t set out that way。 It wasn’t unenjoyable I just found that with the way it was set seemed rushed。 Like a father who goes to one daughter during summer and another for the rest of the year and one is rich and the other is poor and the rich o I think the concept of the story was good。 I just didn’t like the way it was set out。 Like a poem or that type of writing didn’t resonate with me and I found I couldn’t get into the story which was a shame cause I think i would’ve really liked it if it weren’t set out that way。 It wasn’t unenjoyable I just found that with the way it was set seemed rushed。 Like a father who goes to one daughter during summer and another for the rest of the year and one is rich and the other is poor and the rich ones mother doesn’t want to give the poor one some of the money they getWith the way I liked the poet x as it was set in a similar way I was shocked when I didn’t like this one as much This book is about grief and loss and family and I did like the way the topics were discussed in the story and not just glanced over like how some other authors do it。 All in all a good book if you like the topics 。。。more

5🌟This is such a beautifully written novel。 I'm not a huge fan of books written in verse, usually, but this was so well done。 The audiobook is stellar, and I would highly recommend listening to it。I read Acevedo's With the Fire on High last year and absolutely loved it。 I do think that it remains my favorite of her works still, but that just goes to show how incredibly talented she is as an author。 I'll be eagerly anticipating an announcement of what she'll be releasing next。 5🌟This is such a beautifully written novel。 I'm not a huge fan of books written in verse, usually, but this was so well done。 The audiobook is stellar, and I would highly recommend listening to it。I read Acevedo's With the Fire on High last year and absolutely loved it。 I do think that it remains my favorite of her works still, but that just goes to show how incredibly talented she is as an author。 I'll be eagerly anticipating an announcement of what she'll be releasing next。 。。。more

This。 Book。Phew! It sucked me in and didn't let me go。 I tore through it in two sittings。 I definitely slept on Elizabeth Acevedo for longer than I would have liked (life, ugh), but now I'm going to find the rest of her novels。 First, the structure is just so interesting。 I absolutely love verse novels and this one is no exception。 The imagery is stunning and I found myself wanting to capture phrases in my brain forever。 (I even took a few photos of some on my phone for safe keeping。)The story i This。 Book。Phew! Heartbreaking and fabulous。 The story is particularly poignant for anyone who has lost a parent or experienced being strung between two lives in different countries, but I think it could have something to give almost anyone。 Highly recommended in audio form, the author is one of the narrators and you can really tell she's an experienced poet and performer。 Her voice is so warm。 Heartbreaking and fabulous。 The story is particularly poignant for anyone who has lost a parent or experienced being strung between two lives in different countries, but I think it could have something to give almost anyone。 Highly recommended in audio form, the author is one of the narrators and you can really tell she's an experienced poet and performer。 Her voice is so warm。 。。。more

It's hard to describe this one。 I've never read anything like it and don't think I ever will again。 A story of love and loss and finding love through loss。 The relationship dynamics between the work in this one were deeply rooted and made me feel like wanting to be a part of their family。 It's hard to describe this one。 I've never read anything like it and don't think I ever will again。 A story of love and loss and finding love through loss。 The relationship dynamics between the work in this one were deeply rooted and made me feel like wanting to be a part of their family。 。。。more

First time experiencing a novel in verse but wow so beautiful and emotional。 This story was a tad predictable but the emotions and young women were strong and bold。 I listened via audiobook so it really came alive with the spoken word。 I am going to check out Acevedo’s other books too!

Elizabeth Acevedo doesn't fail me! Mostly because I am part of she calls her community。 I'm afro-antillana born in NYC。 I am so proud of her writing almost as if I personally knew her and mostly I am happy that the current generation of afro-antillanos have a voice in her in literature because it wasn't there when I was growing up and it is so very important to feel seen and understood。 Oh and by the way it should be at the very least be translated into Spanish。 I'm not entirely sure how they wo Elizabeth Acevedo doesn't fail me!
