I will admit, it is very hard to translate from Mandarin (especially classical Chinese) to English。 In my opinion, this edition's translation is decent, although in some parts, the meaning has been a bit lost (Example "yi yue dao" translates to "everyone from the emperor to the people approaches war with one soul" more so than "moral doctrine")。 What I liked about this translation was that for phrases that were hard to translate were elaborated on as much as possible while citing examples used b I will admit, it is very hard to translate from Mandarin (especially classical Chinese) to English。 In my opinion, this edition's translation is decent, although in some parts, the meaning has been a bit lost (Example "yi yue dao" translates to "everyone from the emperor to the people approaches war with one soul" more so than "moral doctrine")。 What I liked about this translation was that for phrases that were hard to translate were elaborated on as much as possible while citing examples used by historical figures for a clearer explanation。 In 'general' (pun intended), what I find most interesting about The Art of War is that it is still applicable today, not so much in military, but in everyday life like business and conduct。 。。。more

A necessary reading to know the strategies to deal with people。It seems obvious that you need to study your conditions and those of your “enemy”。Many people say: “I don’t have enemies”。Many of them operate within。 The outside is just the mirror of some internal battles。

It is insane to me that there was someone 2,500 years ago that had ideas so revolutionary that literally every generation since has decided that this book is important to keep and share。 If you think about ALL of the history between now and 500BC, the world has had a crazy amount of differing priorities。 But people in every generation have chosen to ensure that this information was preserved for the future。 Separately, there have been thousands of forward thinking people throughout history who w It is insane to me that there was someone 2,500 years ago that had ideas so revolutionary that literally every generation since has decided that this book is important to keep and share。 If you think about ALL of the history between now and 500BC, the world has had a crazy amount of differing priorities。 But people in every generation have chosen to ensure that this information was preserved for the future。 Separately, there have been thousands of forward thinking people throughout history who were "before their time" and their ideas were not appreciated。 The fact that these messages were relevant for people who are now dust in the ground as well as for those living today is crazy and exciting for me。 I love how books can bring people together across time and space。 Now, the book。 I thought this would be a quick read as my version is 127 pages。 However, there were a lot of passages that I needed to re-read for them to make sense。 For example "Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat: how much no calculation at all!" Some phrases, however were easy to understand like "All warfare is based on deception。" There were some super practical tips for war-time strategies like, "If those who are sent to draw water begin by drinking themselves, the army is suffering from thirst"。 But there were also some statements that were more versatile like, "There are not more then five primary colours (blue, yellow, red, white and black), yet in combination they produce more hues than can ever be seen。" I can see how Napoleon would have been intrigued by these teachings; I can see that a general could take this information literally to win a war and that is pretty cool。 I can also see how people across history have utilised these teachings in business, politics and sport。 All in all, it was an interesting enough read。 I think if I had a purpose to my reading (like coming up with a business strategy), then I probably would have gotten a lot more out of it。 For a book that I bought and read out of curiosity I think it was good enough。 I will probably keep it on my shelf just in case I ever want to come up with a plan of attack for something。 。。。more

Surprisingly good read。 I’ve started this a few times and never got round to finishing it, but I have now。 A lot of people use some of these ‘tactics and thought processes’ in their daily lives and I can see why。 Although I won’t be。 I wonder if I can use any next time I’m playing Monopoly! Ha!

Overall - Sun Tzu's novel will stand among some of history's greatest。 The knowledge and tactics stored inside are invaluable to all kinds of people。 War is as ancient as humanity, and this book will continue to drive the artform that war is。 This book is a good history lesson on chivalric warfare, and a time capsule from a bygone era。 Everyone can gain at least something from it。 Overall - Sun Tzu's novel will stand among some of history's greatest。 The knowledge and tactics stored inside are invaluable to all kinds of people。 War is as ancient as humanity, and this book will continue to drive the artform that war is。 This book is a good history lesson on chivalric warfare, and a time capsule from a bygone era。 Everyone can gain at least something from it。 。。。more

Accumulation of thoughts about war。 2500 years old。 Reading this probably would have saved millions in World War 1 and 2 (war is always only the ultima ratio for conflicts)。 Classic literature and definitely worth reading!

Pretty underwhelming for a classic。 I just read The Art of War and not the context about when it was written or about Sun Tzu that other translations seem to include。 The context might have been interesting, but the classic was nothing but a quick read。

I listened to this through audio book and it was interesting to hear。 I might read it again in the future since some tips were quite helpful especially if you apply it in a leader or business situation。 However, I didn't agree on some parts hence I can't give it a 5/5。Regardless, it's been helpful for a somewhat "warfreak" like me in making me more calm and rational。 I listened to this through audio book and it was interesting to hear。 I might read it again in the future since some tips were quite helpful especially if you apply it in a leader or business situation。 However, I didn't agree on some parts hence I can't give it a 5/5。Regardless, it's been helpful for a somewhat "warfreak" like me in making me more calm and rational。 。。。more
