Summary

A brilliant, intimate biography of English writer Barbara Pym。

She was Pym to friends。 Miss Pym in her diaries。 Sandra in seduction mode。 Pymska at her most sophisticated。
English novelist Barbara Pym’s career was defined, in many senses, by rejection。 Her first novel Some Tame Gazelle was turned down by every publisher she sent it out in 1935, finally published only fifteen years later。 Though she picked up a publisher from there and received modest praise, the publishing industry grew restless and her sales spiralled downwards。 By her seventh novel she had been dropped。 She was deemed old-fashioned, telling stories of little English villages, unrequited love and the social dramas of vicars or academics。

This brilliant biography, brimming with Pym’s private diaries and intimate letters, offers a first full insight into Barbara Pym’s life and how it informed her writing。 It gallops through her love affairs and lifelong relationships。 It opens a door to the quick-draw humour which lives in her every written line。 It shows how, with a little help from her most ardent fans and friends including Philip Larkin, her work eventually resurfaced, meeting new readers and bringing her sudden astounding, resounding love and acclaim – in the last years of her life。

A journey of a girl/woman from heart break to self healing。。 I really enjoyed the first section!! we are not defined by the love our family could or could not give us。。we are defined, instead, by the people we consciously become in spite of them—the kindness we show others, the forgiveness we give to ourselves, the times we speak up instead of choosing to remain silent, & the difficult yet necessary apologies we make。。

I liked it 😍, here are some of my favorite parts:♡don’t be scared to trust, but don’t take that to mean that you need to trust every single soul you meet on your journey— that’s naive, not to mention unsafe。 it’s good to be on guard sometimes, for not everyone has your best interests at heart。 get to a point where it’s enough for you to have those few loyal people who stand beneath the tightrope ready to catch you if & when you slip。—minimalism。♡they will try to convince you that you have no rig I liked it 😍, here are some of my favorite parts:♡don’t be scared to trust, but don’t take that to mean that you need to trust every single soul you meet on your journey— that’s naive, not to mention unsafe。 it’s good to be on guard sometimes, for not everyone has your best interests at heart。 get to a point where it’s enough for you to have those few loyal people who stand beneath the tightrope ready to catch you if & when you slip。—minimalism。♡they will try to convince you that you have no right to be unhappy—that other people have it so much worse than you do。 even if that last statement is true, it doesn’t matter。 your pain is yours, & comparing it to the pain of others doesn’t solve the problem。 do not let their words stop you from reaching out for the help you need。♡be mindful of the apples people try to offer you。 some will be perfectly delicious, but others may be laced with poison。 try not to settle for their toxicity just because you’re starving & you think there’s nothing better out there for you。 the pain you will have to endure isn’t worth it。 go on—explore new orchards, & don’t be afraid to be picky about it。 you, my dear, deserve only the sweetest things life has to offer。 。。。more

3。75 starsThis book is wonderful。 It was filled with beautiful poems that needs to be read by everyone。 The author's writing - wow。 I love the themes, of how it talks about confidence, self-worth, self-love, and fairy tales that must end not because of a king or prince but because we finally accept ourselves as queens。 I just wish to read more from Amanda Lovelace。 3。75 starsThis book is wonderful。 It was filled with beautiful poems that needs to be read by everyone。 The author's writing - wow。 I love the themes, of how it talks about confidence, self-worth, self-love, and fairy tales that must end not because of a king or prince but because we finally accept ourselves as queens。 I just wish to read more from Amanda Lovelace。 。。。more

This isn’t my favorite of Amanda Lovelace’s poetry。 I didn’t mind it, but I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had finished it in one sitting like I’ve done with her previous collections。

"Take off your armor。 Put away your sword。 Lay each of your arrows down。 I promise it can wait until tomorrow。 - it's time to rest"This book was so empowering。 This is part of one of the several poems from this book that I've saved for later, as a reminder to myself。 I've loved every last one of her poetry books, and this one is no different。 Highly reccomend。 "Take off your armor。 Put away your sword。 Lay each of your arrows down。 I promise it can wait until tomorrow。 - it's time to rest"This book was so empowering。 This is part of one of the several poems from this book that I've saved for later, as a reminder to myself。 I've loved every last one of her poetry books, and this one is no different。 Highly reccomend。 。。。more

My second book of poetry this year。I’m reminded of why I love poetry so much and why I am still so determined to read more of it。While the first half of this book didn’t live up to my expectations, I loved the second half of the book。If you’re familiar with Amanda Lovelace’s work, you know that her books are in a way based off of fairytales or rather, they have that fairytale element。She takes what we were taught or shown with fairy tales growing up and puts a feminist perspective on them。 She t My second book of poetry this year。I’m reminded of why I love poetry so much and why I am still so determined to read more of it。While the first half of this book didn’t live up to my expectations, I loved the second half of the book。If you’re familiar with Amanda Lovelace’s work, you know that her books are in a way based off of fairytales or rather, they have that fairytale element。She takes what we were taught or shown with fairy tales growing up and puts a feminist perspective on them。 She tells us that a women does not need a King to be Queen, in fact, she never even needs a prince to rescue her because she is her own knight in shining armor。 Another element of the book is that in the first half, there is a “big sister” aspect that offers advice and guidance on “scenarios” that can range from realizing your worth, stepping out of the shadows, loving yourself, etc。 etc。 I really related to almost all the “scenarios” that she’d written, but it was the big sister advice that fell flat for me。 Because I related so much, I would actually look to the big sister advice to give me another perspective or for it to be something to help me realize and grow。 It didn’t do that for me, for the most part, it just felt lacking and like it didn’t really “help” at all。 But maybe that’s expecting too much, I’m not sure。 It wasn’t always the case。 Sometimes, the advice was spot on。For the second half of the book, I really enjoyed it a lot more because there is no more “big sister says” and it’s just poetry/prose。 It’s all very relatable。 One of my favorites was:“Embody the heroine you needed when you were a child, but don’t forget to embody the heroine you need now too。” - nurture all of youI think so many of us as kids imagine what we’ll be like。 Imagine that we’ll be stronger and able to take on anything。 Or like Olaf, “things will all make sense when I’m older。” And when you become older, absolutely nothing is how you thought it’d be。 You have moments of weakness and things definitely don’t always make sense。 In fact, rarely do they ever。 But you still embody that vision you had in the past and that vision of yourself that you want to be in the future so that you remember your past because it makes you who you are, while also looking forward to your future and that’s the woman that will guide you through。 That’s the woman you need。At least that was what I got from it。 It was one of my favorites because it made me reflect on how much I’ve grown, but also on how much growing I still have to do and what I need or can do to better myself to get there。Recommendation: I think the fairytale element that is brought to these are unique and can make them fun and enjoyable。 It’s like a modern fairytale for women。 It’s encouraging and perhaps eye - opening, and as I said relatable。 With that being said, I think it could be worth the read。 。。。more

I thought it was poor and just resembled bad Instagram poetry。 There seems to be a trend of not capitalising ‘I’ which I also found frustrating。 The poetry had no structure at all and a sheer lack of punctuation。

I keep saying to myself that it's time for me to bow out of Amanda Lovelace's poetry anthologies because, whilst I do genuinely enjoy each of them, I think I also draw the same feeling from each of them too。 The themes, approach and general tone of her books is generally all the same sort of thing, so it starts to get a bit repetitive over time; I feel like I have already read even the newest instalments before。 But, I can't stop, even though I think I should, because there is just something abo I keep saying to myself that it's time for me to bow out of Amanda Lovelace's poetry anthologies because, whilst I do genuinely enjoy each of them, I think I also draw the same feeling from each of them too。 The themes, approach and general tone of her books is generally all the same sort of thing, so it starts to get a bit repetitive over time; I feel like I have already read even the newest instalments before。 But, I can't stop, even though I think I should, because there is just something about them that keeps me invested。 I love the illustrations and there is a high chance they are a large component of why I like these poems so much。 I don't necessarily take a great deal from the poetry; I just find it to be easy reading and quite uplifting, so that's nice。 But the illustrations are so pretty and ethereal - they perfectly compliment the story she weaves。 This particular book looks at relationships between women, mostly sisters, and how we should protect each other and draw strength from each other, straightening each others crowns instead of allowing them to tilt unceremoniously off the side of our heads。 Life isn't a competition against all the other people in it, it's just existing, and Lovelace really makes me think all sorts of things (and remember all sorts of things) as I casually flick through her work from time to time。It's hard to really capture why these poems are worth investing your time in。 But, it works for me; maybe it would work for you too。 。。。more

I do love Amanda Lovelace's poetry! Her words are always so inspiring and empowering。 I'm always wanting to share every page, sometimes with everyone, sometimes with specific people that I think of as I read。 I often feel that I'm reading my own thoughts, feelings, myself in her words。 Her poetry is relatable and powerful, I don't think I'll ever tire of reading them。 I also just love the art in her collections。 I definitely recommend giving her works, including this latest one, a read。 I do love Amanda Lovelace's poetry! I love the premise of flipped fairytales but after the mermaid book I felt like all the poems are things I had seen before all over the Internet, just formatted differently, and that make it seem disingenuous to me。 I wish she would have taken this flipped fairy tale concept and taken it further than Pinterest quotables。
