I really enjoyed this book! I tend to be wary of YA fantasy books for a vareity of reasons so I'm always pleasantly surprised when I like one as much as I did The Bright and the Pale。 From beginning to end this book was intriguing and fun! I never felt as if it was dragging and I never felt as if the worldbuilding was bad。 This was really just a charming fantasy book and I can't wait for the sequel。 I will definitely be rereading this one! It happens so early on that I don't really think so。) I really enjoyed the fantasy world that was built here, although I do wish it had been expanded on a little further。 The curse that took Val's family was tragic but still so cool (no pun intended) as a concept。 Magic doesn't appear to be accessible to everyone, and when it does show up, seems to be a very soft system that does what it needs to when it needs to (there's nothing wrong with that, but I know it does bother some people!)。For the most part I enjoyed the characters immensely。 I would love to know more about Chinua and Serafima than the brief histories we were given, although I didn't really care one way or the other about Ivan。 Val and Alic were likeable enough, although they did occasionally suffer from annoying miscommunication (just talk to each other, people! )。 Their romance was sweet, but a lot of issues could have been avoided if Val had just listened to the words Alic was saying instead of instantaneously getting mad and refusing to listen any further。 I did end up enjoying this book immensely and I look forward to the second one in this duology! 。。。more

I went into this book blind and am so grateful I did, because it did not disappoint! Bring on the sequel! 。。。more

I gotta be honest when I say this really felt like a debut novel。 It really took me nearly 70 pages to become interested in the plot。 I really found the opening chapters to be boring。 However, I can admit that the second half of the novel does pick up。 As other reviewers have said, the ending is the most compelling part of the book。 The story itself was predictable。 There were no plot points that surprised me。 I found the characters all to be rather flat as well。 I don't feel any connection towa I gotta be honest when I say this really felt like a debut novel。 It really took me nearly 70 pages to become interested in the plot。 I really found the opening chapters to be boring。 However, I can admit that the second half of the novel does pick up。 As other reviewers have said, the ending is the most compelling part of the book。 The story itself was predictable。 There were no plot points that surprised me。 I found the characters all to be rather flat as well。 I don't feel any connection toward Valeria。 She's a pretty standard YA heroine in most regards。 I will say that I didn't find her annoying or stupid though。 She just reads as run of the mill for me。 I felt the same about the side characters。 None of them distinguished themselves。 The romance fell completely flat。 It was extremely formulaic and I didn't feel invested in the relationship。I'm disappointed with this read。 I really thought it had potential。 I was intrigued by the idea of an entire village being frozen in a freak magical disaster。 The relationship between the two gods is interesting。 I'm curious as to the history between the two of them and how it effected the country of Strana。 The execution just didn't do it for me。 I'm still undecided on weather or not I'll read the sequel。 。。。more

Loved the mythology behind this book! The pace really picked up towards the end and it was the best part of the book。 The conflict between the gods is really interesting, but I feel like there's more to it than we know now。 Hopefully it will be explored in the next book more! 2。5 Stars The Bright & the Pale had a lot of potential, but became too muddled and repetitive。 It's definitely more on the younger end of the YA spectrum in terms of really on the nose foreshadowing-- each character could have winked after saying something that would come into play, it was that obvious。 I would say it's a mix of Shadow and Bone (not to the extent of Wicked Saints, which is basically a fan fiction of SaB) and a compilation of the Mines of Moria passages from The Fellowship of the 2。5 Stars The Bright & the Pale had a lot of potential, but became too muddled and repetitive。 It's definitely more on the younger end of the YA spectrum in terms of really on the nose foreshadowing-- each character could have winked after saying something that would come into play, it was that obvious。 I would say it's a mix of Shadow and Bone (not to the extent of Wicked Saints, which is basically a fan fiction of SaB) and a compilation of the Mines of Moria passages from The Fellowship of the Ring, but it sadly didn't measure up。 。。。more

3。5 starsValeria’s mountain village was overtaken by a terrifying curse that froze her entire family alive, leaving her the only survivor of the frost。 Now a spy for the Czar, Valeria takes a job that will bring her back to the mountain that took everything from her。 The plot of this book failed to really interest me for the longest time, and it was best when it was delving into the rich, Russian-inspired fantasy worldbuilding。 I was sure that I was going to give this 3 stars, but then the plot 3。5 starsValeria’s mountain village was overtaken by a terrifying curse that froze her entire family alive, leaving her the only survivor of the frost。 Now a spy for the Czar, Valeria takes a job that will bring her back to the mountain that took everything from her。 The plot of this book failed to really interest me for the longest time, and it was best when it was delving into the rich, Russian-inspired fantasy worldbuilding。 I was sure that I was going to give this 3 stars, but then the plot picked up halfway through and took some delightful twists and turns。 The book ended in a way that piqued my interest quite a bit。 Valeria is an angry, grieving protagonist who has lost her entire family。 All she has is Alik, a fellow spy whom she is in love with even after he disappeared prior to the start of the novel, and Luiza, her spymaster and guardian。 The book journeys her descent into darkness and the creatures who await her in the ice, which I found refreshing as most narratives are about people finding the light。 I found the persecution of Valeria’s people a tired trope, though, and it’s been overused in YA fantasy especially。 Alas, I look forward to seeing where this series goes, especially since the Bright God and the Pale God are so interesting。 。。。more

This book had a strong start。 An orphaned girl who was taken in by a thieves guild and ends up recruited for a quest into the town she was born in? That’s a great start!I think the romance, white sweet, was a little lackluster, and the MC was kind of annoying at times。 Like she was too gullible and trusting but at the same time not at all。 And the ending was just predictable。Overall I had a good enough time reading The Bright and the Pale。 I think the main character could be a bit better and I w This book had a strong start。 An orphaned girl who was taken in by a thieves guild and ends up recruited for a quest into the town she was born in? I am always quick to pick up a book with Russian lore, but this didn’t feel as Russian as I expected it to。 It was still a decent read with new and interesting deities and a fascinating tale。 It felt a little rushed for me, but I like the characters and stories。

What can I say??? This book was AMAZING! It was so fast paced, and I love the myth and lore of the world Jess created! The characters were lovable and relatable, and the imagery and details of the story were crafted so well。 This was a beyond fabulous debut for Jess; it was perfection, and I can’t wait for book #2。
