Summary

Eh, I wasn’t too wild about this book。 I preferred the part of the story from the past; the heroine, Caroline, in present times, seemed to miraculously draw all sorts of perfect conclusions when trying to figure out the past。 She made the story unbelievable。

Entertaining debut from Sarah Penner, deftly mixing the stories of three female leads alternating between between late 18th century and present day London。 Nella, an apothecary dispensing poisons and some genuine medicines to women in distress with a target (male) victim in mind, and Eliza, a precocious 12-yr old servant girl, find themselves in dire straits as a result of Nella’s dark arts but also Eliza’s fatal mistake。 Meanwhile, modern day Caroline, a would-be historian turned domesticated h Entertaining debut from Sarah Penner, deftly mixing the stories of three female leads alternating between between late 18th century and present day London。 Nella, an apothecary dispensing poisons and some genuine medicines to women in distress with a target (male) victim in mind, and Eliza, a precocious 12-yr old servant girl, find themselves in dire straits as a result of Nella’s dark arts but also Eliza’s fatal mistake。 Meanwhile, modern day Caroline, a would-be historian turned domesticated housewife, flees to London in despair after her marriage crumbles on the eve of their 10th wedding anniversary。 Caroline finds an artifact belonging to the women from 200+ years ago and their stories start to enmesh。。。I enjoyed Caroline’s story the most as the contemporary feel of the writing was on point and the storyline was (mostly) believable, with Penner inspiring the right amount of sympathy for Caroline without turning the character too mawkish。 In contrast, I struggled with the historical account, not due to plot points (although they firmly on the dramatic side), but from the overly stiff dialogue which was formal but。。。not formal enough for the 1700’s。 It didn’t transport me to the past。 With Caroline’s accounts, I felt I could have easily watched this unfold today, although admittedly that’s an easier ask of a contemporary novel。Giving this 3。5 stars rounded down to 3, but this is a fine debut and is quite popular amongst readers who enjoys stories about female empowerment, and with a touch of fantasy and-as they call it in the book-“magick。” 。。。more

I liked this book a lot。 As someone who doesn’t and hasn’t ever felt the motherly need to have children the droning about yearning for a baby got old real fast, but otherwise I really enjoyed everything about this book。

I was so excited to ready this book。 The promise sounds intriguing and deep but instead it was one big eye roll and boring。

This is a good book that had the potential to be a great book。 I enjoyed the story, the concept and the alternating timeline。 I thought the character development, plot execution and feminist theme could all use some work。 At 300 pages, this is a shorter novel。 I felt like 50 more pages would have allowed for a deeper dive into the characters lives and the female empowerment theme, making this a more well rounded and impactful read。 I am, however, now obsessed with mudlarking。 Who wants to come w This is a good book that had the potential to be a great book。 I enjoyed the story, the concept and the alternating timeline。 I thought the character development, plot execution and feminist theme could all use some work。 At 300 pages, this is a shorter novel。 I felt like 50 more pages would have allowed for a deeper dive into the characters lives and the female empowerment theme, making this a more well rounded and impactful read。 I am, however, now obsessed with mudlarking。 Who wants to come with me to dig through river mud in hopes of finding some ancient artifacts? 。。。more

I'm usually not a fan of historical fiction but I adored this book。 I could have done without Caroline's parts, but it was still a nice turn of events towards the end。 I'm usually not a fan of historical fiction but I adored this book。 I could have done without Caroline's parts, but it was still a nice turn of events towards the end。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I was extremely excited about this book when I selected it in my March BOTM box。 Overall, I still liked it, but I was actually a little bit disappointed on a few counts and really debated between 3 stars and 4 stars, and will settle for calling this a 3。5。 It was deeply frustrating how some of the key issues arose because of simple miscommunication or characters being a little bit obtuse。 I also thought Caroline was exceedingly dull, and I wanted so badly to root for her but I just couldn't quit I was extremely excited about this book when I selected it in my March BOTM box。 Overall, I still liked it, but I was actually a little bit disappointed on a few counts and really debated between 3 stars and 4 stars, and will settle for calling this a 3。5。 It was deeply frustrating how some of the key issues arose because of simple miscommunication or characters being a little bit obtuse。 I also thought Caroline was exceedingly dull, and I wanted so badly to root for her but I just couldn't quite get there。 She thought she was very interesting for keeping unimportant secrets and every interaction she had with her husband made me want to start screaming (side-note, he is a gas lighting crap basket and I wish he had drank more eucalyptus and I'm not sorry)。 My biggest complaint though is there was no enough MURDER。 I walked into this thinking tons of men were going to be poisoned and I was hype for it, but only TWO did and one of them was an ACCIDENT。 I expected a far greater focus on Nella and her life as an apothecary, and specifically her relationship with clients, and that was a huge piece that was missing。 By the time we get to Nella, she's basically on the precipice of death and is forever in mourning over her scarred womb and moron Frederick。 I was over it。 However, all that said, I still liked the story and the strong emphasis on the power of female friendships and am trying to be cognizant of the fact that it's a debut。 I think there was a lot of material here though that didn't get the sunshine it deserved, and I truly could not have been less interested in Caroline's growth (ummmm hellooooo no one writes a singular application to Cambridge in one night and then assumes they're in, get a grip)。 I wish that this had taken more of a Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo approach where we spent significantly more time with Nella and Eliza and Caroline's story was more gently layered in around it。 And, again, I wish more men had been POISONED。 。。。more

This book was not a page turner for me at all。 It took me a long time to read it and I read several books in between the start and finish。 However, the storylines were good。 The book overall was enjoyable but I’m happy it’s done。

I feel like this is one of those books that is written just for me。 A feminist tale about a hidden apothecary in 1790's London where a woman secretly gives poisons to women to liberate them from the men in their life。 This was everything that I loved。 The writing in this debut was really great and all of the characters are interesting and could each hold the entire book completely on their own。 I especially loved the 1790 timeline with Nella and Eliza, but I also really related to Caroline's tim I feel like this is one of those books that is written just for me。 A feminist tale about a hidden apothecary in 1790's London where a woman secretly gives poisons to women to liberate them from the men in their life。 This was everything that I loved。 The writing in this debut was really great and all of the characters are interesting and could each hold the entire book completely on their own。 I especially loved the 1790 timeline with Nella and Eliza, but I also really related to Caroline's timeline as well。 The historian aspect and the research and digging Caroline did to learn about the old apothecary was a lot of fun and really spoke to my own interests。 The older timeline has wonderful atmosphere and a very gothic vibe to it。 I just fell in love with this book in the same surprising way that I fell in love with Jess Kidd's Things in Jars last year。 It's the kind of soft historical fantasy that I love。 。。。more

It pains me to only give it 2 stars, it really does。 It is just not what I was expecting from this book。When I read the description of this book, I was intrigued。 The concept sounded fascinating and the dual timelines even intrigued me。 (Truthfully, not my favorite structure since I feel like it is overused these days but sometimes it seems right。) The teaser had me all in。 I hate saying this but it did not meet my expectation at all。Based on the jacket, I was looking at something a little darke It pains me to only give it 2 stars, it really does。 It is just not what I was expecting from this book。When I read the description of this book, I was intrigued。 The concept sounded fascinating and the dual timelines even intrigued me。 (Truthfully, not my favorite structure since I feel like it is overused these days but sometimes it seems right。) The teaser had me all in。 I hate saying this but it did not meet my expectation at all。Based on the jacket, I was looking at something a little darker, maybe even sinister。 Unfortunately, this read a little--okay a lot--more fluffy than I had anticipated。 The dual timelines, while superficially slightly parallel, didn't really matter。 In fact, I felt the book would have been much better if the modern story was just ignored completely and the focus remained in the past。 I really struggled with whether to even rate since I had such a "meh" experience with this book but the fact that I was going in thinking it was one thing, surprised and disappointed that it was something else, I just couldn't let it go。 I apologize to the author。 。。。more

It was okay。 Nothing special but decently paced and a quick enough read that it kept my attention。

I liked this book and found it enjoyable, but I didn’t love it as much as I wanted to。 The plot moved along fast enough, but I found the characters of Eliza and Gaynor unbelievable, and also wished some details were fleshed out more。 I’d recommend this as an easy vacation read, and it’s a nice distraction from what’s happening in the world。

3。5 stars。I really liked the beginning, the format of the book reminded me of Labyrinth by Kate Mosse。The book was an easy read and had some very interesting historical titbits。 I did spend some time looking up maps, mudlarking and photographs。。。I was really liking it。Then towards the end it seemed to run out of steam。 The connection between the two timelines was very weak, nothing like I thought it should be。 I finished the book feeling underwelmed but still glad I read it。

This is one of those “quiet” books。 Does anything insanely exciting happen? No。 But I think it was more about revisiting yourself and finding yourself all over again。 It’s definitely more about Caroline then Nella and Eliza。

It was just *okay*。 It would have been a 4-5 star for me if it focused on being a generational tale between Nella and her mom while leaving out Caroline’s timeline。 It’s great she felt connected, but that was all I felt like was added to the story。

I was emersed in eighteenth century London as the characters sneak around in dark alleys and dispense their own kind of justice。 Unfaithfulness and revenge create many twists and turns as the apothecary dispenses her poison to worthy recipients。
