Summary

Frances is twenty-one years old, cool-headed and observant。 A student in Dublin and an aspiring writer, at night she performs spoken word with her best friend Bobbi, who used to be her girlfriend。 When they are interviewed and then befriended by Melissa, a well-known journalist who is married to Nick, an actor, they enter a world of beautiful houses, raucous dinner parties and holidays in Provence, beginning a complex ménage-à-quatre。 But when Frances and Nick get unexpectedly closer, the sharply witty and emotion-averse Frances is forced to honestly confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time。

bold of sally rooney to call this book “conversations with friends” when she doesn’t use quotation marks in her characters’ dialogue

I’m just thinking that Sally Rooney is not the author for me。

the title: conversations with friendsthe book: miscommunication, not a single meaningful conversation, ghosting, toxic relationships

Really enjoyed, I liked it even better than normal people。 It was awkward, horny and interesting。

This book makes me want to be a writer。 Beautiful story and accurate depiction of complicated relationships and inner turmoil。

It's strangely addicting and I'm surprised that i enjoyed it considering I gave Normal People 2。5 stars!Props to Sally Rooney, she is definitely talented for both ending of Normal People and Conversations with Friends, it made you lie there feeling empty and speechless👏👏 it's like ya i saw it coming but we're still surprised。 It's strangely addicting and I'm surprised that i enjoyed it considering I gave Normal People 2。5 stars!Props to Sally Rooney, she is definitely talented for both ending of Normal People and Conversations with Friends, it made you lie there feeling empty and speechless👏👏 it's like ya i saw it coming but we're still surprised。 。。。more

Unpopular opinion : I like this one better

I really liked the book overall。 Sally Rooney is a great writer, but all the characters were the WORST。 That may be the point? Just a story about pretty shitty people and their lives。 But oh my god I could not stand Bobbi, or Frances at many times or really all of them。

I enjoyed this book, it took a lot of unexpected turns and was jam packed with thought provoking writing。 I feel slightly attached to the characters, but they were just a hair passed the line between real and utter chaos, which makes me feel less invested, I think。 However, I LOVED the voice of Frances and would reread this book again just to understand more of her。 Nick, as well, was a very intriguing character to me and I loved the growth that we got to see between them。 Sally Rooney’s writing I enjoyed this book, it took a lot of unexpected turns and was jam packed with thought provoking writing。 I feel slightly attached to the characters, but they were just a hair passed the line between real and utter chaos, which makes me feel less invested, I think。 However, I LOVED the voice of Frances and would reread this book again just to understand more of her。 Nick, as well, was a very intriguing character to me and I loved the growth that we got to see between them。 Sally Rooney’s writing style is critiqued a lot by people for being flat, but I continue to enjoy it greatly。 The missing pieces make me pay so much more attention and build the characters in my head out so much more than most books。 。。。more

TW: self harm, mild descriptions of self harm in scenes , a few mentions of suicide idealization , alcohol addiction and cheating。 This book was just so good, I am amazed on how much I liked this book after disliking normal people but this was just such an enjoyable read。

I disliked this book。 It was sooooo boring。 It took me weeks to read it because my heart sank when I looked at it and I just scrolled Twitter instead。 It described everything in too much detail for me。 Reading every single little detail of every thought, every text, every tedious conversation was excruciatingly dull, and I really wasn't interested enough in the relationships between these annoying people to care。The only specific issue that stuck out for me was the endometriosis。 I suppose I cou I disliked this book。 It was sooooo boring。 It took me weeks to read it because my heart sank when I looked at it and I just scrolled Twitter instead。 It described everything in too much detail for me。 Reading every single little detail of every thought, every text, every tedious conversation was excruciatingly dull, and I really wasn't interested enough in the relationships between these annoying people to care。The only specific issue that stuck out for me was the endometriosis。 I suppose I could give the author credit for bringing the condition to her readers' attention, but it seemed odd in the context of the story that Frances had never heard of it (in every other respect she was portrayed as very intelligent, widely well-read etc)。 And the diagnosis! Wow。 As far as I know, in the real world this is a condition phenomenally hard to get diagnosed。 But for Frances, 2 episodes of pain/fainting, a scan, and she had the diagnosis。 。。。more

Sally Rooney's writing is intelligent, her characters highly self aware, but almost all of them seem to have a knack for making decisions that are objectively self-destructive。 It is evident why these books have resonated with so many。 Not me, though。 Sally Rooney's writing is intelligent, her characters highly self aware, but almost all of them seem to have a knack for making decisions that are objectively self-destructive。 It is evident why these books have resonated with so many。 Not me, though。 。。。more

I think that ultimately, a lot of Rooney’s appeal lies in how relatable her characters are。 And while there are many aspects of Frances that I can relate to (endometriosis and adult children of alcoholics club ayyye!) I ultimately feel like I didn’t really understand her。 Her backstory made her into the guarded and somewhat insecure person protagonist of this novel, yet we didn’t get much insight into her backstory。 Specifically, I would have like to hear more about her father and her relationsh I think that ultimately, a lot of Rooney’s appeal lies in how relatable her characters are。 And while there are many aspects of Frances that I can relate to (endometriosis and adult children of alcoholics club ayyye!) I resonated with the main character so much it made reading the book uncomfortable at times。 But the book is very different and unique。

i liked "normal people" better, i think the story was more my style and was more understandable。 sometimes i didn't understand why frances did the things she did compared to the other characters, but perhaps that's the point。 i liked "normal people" better, i think the story was more my style and was more understandable。 sometimes i didn't understand why frances did the things she did compared to the other characters, but perhaps that's the point。 。。。more

An engrossing read。 Rooney is, to me, exceptionally skilled at writing about relationships and the way people communicate (or don't communicate as appears to be the case so frequently)。There are plenty of similarities between this novel and Normal People, particularly when it comes to female characters who struggle so profoundly with their own self-worth。It was painful to read at times, and some scenes have lingered for far longer than I would have liked them to, but overall a solid book that I An engrossing read。 Rooney is, to me, exceptionally skilled at writing about relationships and the way people communicate (or don't communicate as appears to be the case so frequently)。There are plenty of similarities between this novel and Normal People, particularly when it comes to female characters who struggle so profoundly with their own self-worth。It was painful to read at times, and some scenes have lingered for far longer than I would have liked them to, but overall a solid book that I would definitely recommend。 。。。more

The inner turmoil I now possess because of this novel is breathtaking。 In many ways I feel Frances is an anti-hero, certainly to her own life。 I would argue that Nick and Frances' relationship is not love but rather something selfish。 Their two flaws - his need to be passive/please others, her need to dominate - fold so perfectly together that they love not each other but the release they feel when their need is met。 I secretly rooted for her every time she ignored a text/call/email from Nick。 H The inner turmoil I now possess because of this novel is breathtaking。 In many ways I feel Frances is an anti-hero, certainly to her own life。 I would argue that Nick and Frances' relationship is not love but rather something selfish。 Their two flaws - his need to be passive/please others, her need to dominate - fold so perfectly together that they love not each other but the release they feel when their need is met。 I secretly rooted for her every time she ignored a text/call/email from Nick。 However, perhaps it's my own narrow mindedness equating Frances and Nick's relationship with something "bad"。 Their conversation at the end sums up my now inner argument: "If two people make each other happy then it's working" "You could smile at a stranger on the street and make them happy。。。We're talking about something more complicated"。 。。。more

my first sally rooney。。。i watched normal people but didn’t read it yet and this was very similar so they must have adapted her writing quite well。。。i really enjoyed francis’ internal monologue and i really could see joe as nick sometimes but then i don’t really wanna see joe alwyn (pisces) (london boy) (william bowery) be sexy on screen

my first bleak read of the year。 the writing wasnt bothersome, its how i got sucked into the main character’s mundane world and how her entire persona is about debasing herself to be noticed and be validated constantly。 i did a huge effort to make it to the end which was an agonising effort。 would enjoy it if it revolved around bobbi since i lean more towards characters who have consistency
