Sara Maddock,
Thank God it's over。 Probably would have enjoyed more had I taken it one book at a time over a few years。 This tome did not live up to the promise made by an old friend who gifted me the book。 Sigh。 Thank God it's over。 Probably would have enjoyed more had I taken it one book at a time over a few years。 This tome did not live up to the promise made by an old friend who gifted me the book。 Sigh。 。。。more

First 5 books were really very good; the remaining 5 were a disappointment overall。

This story absolutely awesome。

Bruno Silva,

Tony,
I really enjoyed the entire ten books encased in this volume。 I gets a little slow at points and tends to jump in the story between books, but that is minor and can be plowed through。 I had heard several people say this was on their all-time favorites list and I was not disappointed by the experience。

Weekend Critic,
I don't understand why this is considered an epic or even good fantasy。 Random characters doing random things, always winning, even when losing, random plot twists, op abilities out of the blue etc。。。 What's the point of reading a made up story where literally ANYTHING can happen? And when anything interesting does happen, it is described in a list of sentences that start with 'then'。As if Tolkien would write:'So then they went through the middle earth to get back some dwarf gold。 Then they foug I don't understand why this is considered an epic or even good fantasy。 Random characters doing random things, always winning, even when losing, random plot twists, op abilities out of the blue etc。。。 What's the point of reading a made up story where literally ANYTHING can happen? Elaine,
My god, an incredible slog。 My endurance ran out about halfway through and could not complete。 I liked the idea, the world was interesting。
Paul,
Very fun story overall, and I'd recommend it for anyone who likes fantasy。 Main reason I didn't give 5 stars was because there were a number of slow parts with what felt like unnecessary descriptions that dragged on for long stretches of time。 Would love to read more stories set in this world。 Very fun story overall, and I'd recommend it for anyone who likes fantasy。 Main reason I didn't give 5 stars was because there were a number of slow parts with what felt like unnecessary descriptions that dragged on for long stretches of time。 Would love to read more stories set in this world。 。。。more

Aaron Davis,
There a points in the book where I think it could have become great rather than just good。 My main problem with this story is that the writing style is disjointed and often focuses way too much on the shifts from shadow to Amber and back。 The bones of the story we're excellent but I just wasn't super impressed with the payoff after 10 short books。 All that said, these were still very fun and I'm glad I found them for next to nothing at a thrift shop。 There a points in the book where I think it could have become great rather than just good。 My main problem with this story is that the writing style is disjointed and often focuses way too much on the shifts from shadow to Amber and back。 The bones of the story we're excellent but I just wasn't super impressed with the payoff after 10 short books。 All that said, these were still very fun and I'm glad I found them for next to nothing at a thrift shop。 。。。more
Roger Carter,
I liked the whole series but agree with some others that the first five are the strongest。A real problem Zelazny had in the very last novel was in tying together the unbelievable number of loose ends he had created throughout the series。 Most of these were left unresolved as if he just ran out of energy at the end and just wanted to finish it。 Nevertheless, he did invent a wonderful alternate world and its a must read for lovers of fantasy fiction。
Bethany Mcgowan,
I will always recommend these books。 10/10 the love I have for these is endless。
Jonathan,
I remember the first time I read the first book。 It still stands up。 The ideas are interesting and unlike many fantasy writers Zelazny doesn't create a world so complex and full of characters that you lose track。 I heartily recommend this I remember the first time I read the first book。 It still stands up。 The ideas are interesting and unlike many fantasy writers Zelazny doesn't create a world so complex and full of characters that you lose track。 I heartily recommend this 。。。more
Charles Cohen,
This has been on my list for a while。 It fits squarely in that 80's-90's bucket of tongue-in-cheek, a little meta, a little ironic fantasy series。 The Amber books are not a little arch, and they don't take themselves too seriously - they're like the Roger Moore James Bond of fantasy novels。 And they zip by, which is a relief when you're reading 10 of them in a row。 I don't know that Corwin and Merlin are as charismatic and dynamic as Zelazny thinks they are - I feel like I was shown their appeal This has been on my list for a while。 It fits squarely in that 80's-90's bucket of tongue-in-cheek, a little meta, a little ironic fantasy series。 The Amber books are not a little arch, and they don't take themselves too seriously - they're like the Roger Moore James Bond of fantasy novels。 And they zip by, which is a relief when you're reading 10 of them in a row。 I don't know that Corwin and Merlin are as charismatic and dynamic as Zelazny thinks they are - I feel like I was shown their appeal through other characters' responses to them, rather than any demonstration of their capability。 But the star here is really the whole setup of multiple universes and the fight between Amber and Chaos, between Logrus and the Pattern。 That really shined through, and gave the whole series a really strong spine of plot and movement。 。。。more
